Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast For Spirits- Episode 2 – Anime QandA Review

An Anime QandA review for Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast For Spirits- Episode 2.

What’s the show? Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Episode 2.

Oh right, the anime show you last week compared to ‘Twilight’ and said was obnoxious and potentially harmful. Shut up will you? Maybe I was a bit over zealous with my contempt, turns out there’s a lot worse stuff out there, it’s just this is a genre I’ve got like zero experience in.

So has your opinion changed any in the intervening week? Well obviously. But it’s not just because of the comments, it’s because the show genuinely got better, well in some areas at least.

Shut up jerk!

Go on… Well it’s not nearly as creep-tastic as it was in its first episode, focusing more on our protagonist and less on the Johnny Depp looking oni who’s totally ‘Beauty and the Beast’-ing her meant not only did we get some character development but we got to know her away from the men who will no doubt seek to occupy her life in harem-style shenanigans in the future.

Hmm, well that’s good I suppose. Any other positives? Oh! We get a cute tanuki girl who’s properly introduced! She works at the Inn, and she’s adorable! Also her voice actress sounds familiar but it’s not listed on MAL… very mysterious either that or she’s new to the industry and I’m just imagining things.

Thanks for the exposition!

So it’s a good episode then? It is, I mean the story is good and the old dude who ‘drops in’ and gives her some backstory on her grandfather is great, and the fact that she continues to make decisions that seek to make her autonomous from the male influences is also great even if ultimately she’s only in this situation in the first place because of a male’s poor decisions.

The sins of the father and all that, or grandfather as it is in this case…

I sense a ‘but’? —But! And this is rare for me because I seldom—if ever—talk about animation quality but it must be said, this is a fucking drab and seldom ugly looking show. Like in the first episode I could overlook it because the scenery changed enough that you didn’t focus on it, but here it’s like… how did anyone think this was deserving of a passing grade. Like it’s not incompetent or faulty or a train wreck by any means, it’s just so bland and uninspired it saps whatever little personality was there to begin with and leaves a limping skeleton behind.

I’m sure this’ll come back in a later episode and be important. Fan ex Machina.

Uh-oh, are you dropping this show too? I know I said I wouldn’t drop any shows this season, but I think that was optimistic not only of myself but of the quality of the shows that I thought we’d be getting… I’ll give it another episode, but considering this is a goddamn 26(!) episode season, I really don’t think I’ll make it to the end… well unless more cute girls are introduced!

She’s talking about her cooking! Mind out of the gutter, perverts!

I love anime and more recently manga too. What else do I need to write here?

      1. The tracking sites are moderated by volunteers, so they often run slow.
It’s good to check several (+ ANN & Wikipedia).

I keep thinking I need to set up a set of tabbed bookmarks in my browser so I can open all my usual sources at once…
