Blood Is Thicker Than Saliva – ‘Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight’ Episode 2 Review

Blood Is Thicker Than Saliva – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight’ Episode 2

What’s the show? Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight, Episode 2.

Ah yes, the show with the long title… how’s this episode? Hmm… well… different.

Good “different” or bad “different”? Well that depends who you’re asking.

…Well obviously I’m asking you, numnuts. This is your review after all! For me this was pretty damn great, unlike the last episode which felt a bit hollow, a bit ~void~ of discernible personality—at least as far as the show was concerned. This episode has personality to share. Plus it’s always nice when an anime ticks a bunch of my “boxes” for what I like in an anime.

Uh-huh… why do I get the feeling I’m about to be rolling my eyes or grossed out in a second? Why not both! We have in no particular order: bathing loli fan service, impossibly busty female perverts with a penchant for cute girls, strong female characters, sexual innuendos and exchanging of bodily fluids.

Oh hello *motorboat sounds intensify*

Why am I not supr— wait, what was that last one in relation to?! You’re going to need to explain this?! Looks like we’re going to need a fast rundown of the plot of this episode then! So our ‘Alchemist Knight’ stumbles into a young girl named Jeanne and her cute little fairy friends. After a mess up with one of his alchemical preparations he takes a near-fatal dosage of “elixir” and is left in bad-shape. Sometime later, a busty gun-toting bandit arrives in town to “help” but only in exchange for a large portion of the town’s crops (we call it extortion nowadays). Anyway, the English troops arrive in the town and start causing shit in a ~serious~ way, they even stoop to killing the cute little fairy friends of Jeanne and then when she tries to come to the rescue she gets a sword through her back for the trouble. And not going to lie, I shed a tear or two for the little fairies…

Even the younglings?!

I’m guessing ‘tears’ aren’t the “bodily fluids” that are exchanged? Nope! So it turns out that our protagonist Montmorency has become the vessel for transferring elxirs after his near-death mishap with alchemy earlier in the episode. What does this mean? Well his saliva is now the catalyst for many of the alchemical related spells—and in this particular instance is the thing that’ll save Jeanne from that bad case of ‘sword in the back-itis’. The two swap spit in the best way possible (that’d be a saliva heavy kiss) and Jeanne goes super Saiyan, or rather ‘uber Ulysses’, getting her vengeance on the British troops who killed her fairy friends and despite more-or-less saving her home town, gets exiled for having—under the churches eyes—sold her soul to the devil.

Ah… so it’s just a kiss… well that’s okay then, I guess? It’s not just a kiss; it’s the wettest most saliva heavy kiss in anime history (probably)! *fetish unlocked*

*glug glug glug*

Please stop. Fine—

So, uh—how do you go about recommending this show from a second episode that’s somewhat ~different~ from the first? Watch the first episode, then watch the second? It’s not hard. Or rather, if you watched the first and dropped it and found anything of interest in the above words then watch the second episode as you might find yourself liking the ~new~ show here! I liked the first episode, but was hopeful for a harem and while that hope is still alive, I think the second episode was something distinctly different from the traditional harem while still pushing all those buttons that I was hoping it would!

She was ruthless, and I loved every minute of it!

I love anime and more recently manga too. What else do I need to write here?

  2. This episode was all over the map mood-wise. I mean, we go from sweet girl and banter between Montmorency and Astaroth to fairy stomping to screaming in pain to crazy fighting girl picking fights. It was like a spin-and-puke carnival ride. I definitely wish they’d gone somewhere else with the power-up, cause “sloppy kiss power-ups” has been done before, and probably better.

      1. Eh, I felt this one was gross and yucky. Plus, there was absolutely no relationship meaning to having a kiss between the characters, so it just kind of comes across as assault, especially when followed by all that screaming. It’s like I said before (on Conception, I think): If you take the sexy mood out of the equation, the sexy actions lose most of their sexiness. And a lot of the time, in losing it, they end up pretty squicky. So yeah, for me, this one was definitely lesser, in comparisons to ones I’d seen before.
