Fighting Form – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 4 Review

Fighting Form – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 4

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 4.

So how’s this episode? Okay, the show has finally won me over. I mean it’s still no ‘Comic Girls’ or ‘Slow Start’ but I’m finally ~feeling~ it!

That’s… good I suppose? What won you over specifically? I don’t think it’s any one thing I think I just finally got ~into~ this show’s take on cheerleading and how adorable and dorky and good-spirited and cheesy it is. Also it probably helps that the new girl they’ve added reminds me of Ebina from ‘Himouto! Umaru Chan’ and she’s one of my all time favourite best girls!

Cheer up, Kotetsu!

They’ve got another new girl? But weren’t you complaining in Episode 2 that it was already too many “badgering people to join their club episodes”? Yeah except with the exception of a single scene they don’t badger Kotetsu into joining. She already ~wants~ to join she’s just too self conscious about her, well… everything to get up the courage to participate. It isn’t until she comes to their first “rally” (cheering on the basketball club) that she realizes cheerleading is a team activity and that she won’t be alone and needn’t worry because she’ll have people supporting her! So wholesome!

You go, girl!

So how is their first cheerleading performance in front of an audience? Predictably silly at first but then surprisingly earnest afterwards—though I think I would’ve liked it to have been a little more rough around the edges since this is their first time performing for a group. But then again it’s a pretty simple routine they do, so I shouldn’t be ~too~ annoyed that they’re good at it.

Thankfully no creepy CG animations in their routine!

So now that the show has “won you over”, what does that mean exactly? Not a lot really, just means I’ve gone from being mildly indifferent towards watching the next episode to mildly anticipating it. Here’s hoping the show can continue to be sweet and endearing and fun and ~maybe~ throw in a little bit of depth like they had with the gay side character last week.

Thankfully a person in the audience knows a bit more English than Kohane!

I love anime and more recently manga too. What else do I need to write here?

  1. I thought they did a good job with the feel of their cheering. Like you say, it’s dorky, it’s embarrassing, it’s simplistic, but it fits both Kohane and Arima, and Uki is going along with it. It’s one of those things that if you own it, it stops being dorky and embarrassing, and becomes joyful and inspiring.
