On Her Kawaii Secret Service – ‘Release The Spyce’ Episode 9 Review

What’s the show? Release The Spyce, Episode 9.

So how’s this episode? They do something that I liked a fair bit more in this episode than previous ones, that is that they have character development but it’s tied to action (albeit in a flashback) and even though it’s a flashback its not only relevant to the personal story between Momo and Yuki but it ~also~ fleshes out ‘Sparrow Woman’ a bit more–or at least give us a compelling personal vendetta between here and Yuki.

You’re speaking very ~generally~ care to elaborate? Basically we learn about when Yuki first joined Tsukikage and her mentor at the time xx. We learn about how close they were, the fun times they had and then we learn how she died (at the sword of the ‘Sparrow Mission’ during a mission) and in-turn how Yuki lost her eye (same).

You sound a bit flippant about it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we got this backstory and I’m glad it was interesting and fun and occasionally dramatic and that it all tied together neatly. But this episode did one thing I wasn’t too keen on too.

Oh? Go on then… I never like the whole ‘let’s get to know someone through flashbacks and then kill them off’ way of telling a story, here it’s less egregious than in some anime I’ve seen but it’s still not something I’m too fond of though. That said I can’t really think of a better way of doing it so this complaint amounts down more to personal preference rather than something the show could have done better.

So complaining for the sake of complaining? Pretty much.

Right, well anything else you wanted to add? There was a great reference to one of my favourite James Bond movies (Goldfinger) during the flashback infiltration scene where Yuki and her mentor swim into the base with fake ducks attached to their heads–things like that make me know all the more that this is made with a lot of admiration for those films and that makes me appreciate the show more as a result. Plus the whole Momo and Yuki doing girly things montage was absolutely adorable. This review is probably a bit on the short side, but make no mistake I enjoyed this episode a lot–it was good at being a spy show, it was good at being a cute girl show–though it still could be better at both.
