Cheering Aid – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 12 (Finale) Review

Cheering Aid – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 12 (Finale)

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 12.

So how’s this episode? It was predictably adorable, or adorably predictable or both!

One sounds a lot more positive than the other. Predictability in cute girl shows isn’t a bad thing. It means it’s familiar and comfortable, it can be a great feeling–as it was in this final episode. That said, this episode both simultaneously opened up the potential for future seasons as well as made it clear that they would be absolutely unnecessary all within the span of one scene, but I’ll get to that later.

Kohane being adorkable as usual!

Right. So what happens in this episode? So the girls participate in their first cheerleading tournament but not before the usually bright and energetic Kohane comes down with a bad came of nerves! She becomes suddenly self-conscious about slipping up and ruining everyone’s hardwork so much so that she gets caught up in a spiral of self-doubt and nervousness. Thankfully, she comes to the realisation that she has her friends around her to support her, not just her fellow cheer club members but all her friends and family supporting her from the stands. Unfortunately she only comes to this realisation half-way through their performance and so the lackluster first half of their cheer routine means they don’t make it to the second round of the competition.

So not going to nationals then?

Oh dear. It’s okay though, because Kohane rides the high of the second half of their routine and everything is fine.

And what about Hizume’s previous cheer squad, is the potential for drama that you thought might occur, occur? Not really, no. But it kind of doesn’t matter, there’s a confrontation between the previous group’s cheer leader and Hizume and she pretty much just apologises. But not in a way that feels forced or just trying to make everyone friendly friends for the sake of it. The lead cheer girl acknowledges that they had a genuine issue with how Hizume was back then, but that they went about fixing the issue in the wrong way but most of all she was just happy that Hizume’s found a place where she can be happy and a part of a team. It was a really nice scene.

Naww, now if only they’d told her this 3 months ago instead of letting Hizume’s PTSD fester!

And what was this about a scene that as you said: “simultaneously opened up the potential for future seasons as well as made it clear that they would be absolutely unnecessary”? Right, so there’s talk of future competitions and getting better and doing bigger and better cheer stunts and that’s interesting to me, like the competitive side of cheerleading was barely touched upon but what we did get in this episode was a nice change. It felt like a sports anime for the first time and that was a fun feeling to get from a CGDCT show. But they also mentioned that they had cheer requests for the basketball team (again) and a festival (again) and Uki’s brother’s soccer team (again). And as fun as those things were the first time through it just kind of brought home the point that there’s not a lot to do with this series if it’s going to stick to the club anime formula. This isn’t a complaint about the show we got, I’m more than happy with it, rather just that I’m fine with the episodes we got and unless it went full competitive cheer sports anime I don’t think I’d need a second season.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen that look on Kohane’s face before!

I guess that makes sense. Overall thoughts on the final episode? It’s not the best episode but it’s still as consistently entertaining as the majority of episodes and that’s what is important. Overall just a damn fun and wholesome time with a bunch of cute cheer girls, what more could you ask for? Well maybe more gay stuff… but still, lots of fun to be had!

Go! Fight! Win!

Yuri On Nice – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 11 Review

Yuri On Nice – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 11

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 11.

So how’s this episode? It’s a (continuation of a) beach episode!

Oh god… Don’t criticise, this show is wholesome and cute, nothing lewd about this beach episode! Well until they decide to practice shoulder straddling and Uki learns that Kohane will have her head positioned between her legs and let’s just say that’s a dream come true for the gay girl. And it’s not the only time a character’s ~gayness~ is reference in this episode too, but that comes a bit later.

She’s lovin’ every minute of being between those thighs!

Right. So what happens with the rest of the episode? Well they perform at the beach ~thing~ and that goes well, Kohane overcoming her trepidations about the shoulder straddle thanks to the power of friendship! Afterwards they get part time jobs over the summer so they can pay for new cheer uniforms (which we only see in a brief montage) and the rest of the episode takes place at the cheer shop as they try and decide on colours and patterns and designs.

I had to look up what “glomped” means, I feel old.

Thrilling. You joke but its all the little character moment and jokes that make this series is so satisfying. Like Hizume’s “artistic” interpretation of her ideas for the cheer uniform and Kotetsu getting ~genuinely~ angry at the thought of needing a loose fitting outfit for if she gains weight. But of course that’s not all that happens at the cheer shop as the girls run into Suzuko and Tamako, a pair of twins who used to be on the same cheer squad as Hizume and Kana back in the day.

Kotetsu is too pure.

Oh? And is that the source of some drama? I’d say it’s the promise of drama rather than ~actual~ drama in this particular episode, these two girls seem a bit too passive in their personalities to actually drive any antagonism. What they do do is give us a bit more backstory to how Hizume and Kana were back on their old cheer team. Though the comment I was more interested in is how they straight up call out Kana on being “into yuri” which the too innocent Hizume confuses for her being into lily’s (the flower) as its the same word in Japanese.

Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that!

And why’s that comment more interesting to you (aside from the obvious). Well it is the obvious that’s interesting to me. This show more than a lot of CGDCT shows that i’ve watched seems to lean into the actual gay rather than the implied gay, I mean obvious I’d prefer confirmed couples and dating and kissing, but having girls straight up saying they are into other girls is a nice step.

Don’t mess with Kotetsu!

Fair enough. So overall thoughts? Terrific, honestly really enjoyed it (not that I hadn’t previous) but despite spending a lot of time in one location in the second half of the episode I was thoroughly entertained. And is it lame if I say I’m really looking forward to what they’re uniforms end up looking like? Probably, but I don’t care this show is just too damn ~kawaii desu~!

I could watch these happy girls cheer all day!

Drawing Closer – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 10 Review

Drawing Closer – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 10

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 10.

So how’s this episode? Sound the alarm, it’s a beach episode!

*facepalm* why are you like this? Like what?

*splurt*

Nevermind… so what happens ~around~ the beach part of the episode? Presumably other stuff? Well before they head to the beach they get a request to help out the manga club–not with cheer specifically but rather to help them not fall asleep since the deadline for one of their works is a day away and they’ve got too much to do! It’s cute couple of scenes but nothing mind blowing. Afterwards Kohane wonders whether they should be stepping up their cheer game, doing bigger and better things and so Hizume suggests they participate in an upcoming tournament!

The suffering is real for mangakas.

Oh so this so-called ‘sports’ anime is finally bringing some professional competition into the mix is it? Indeed! But not before a summer training camp to get them into better shape! And where’s the best place for a summer training camp? The beach of course!

Cursed image!

Of course… They’ve also got a dojo that they’re staying at which starts the episode’s main plot point for resolution, that of Hizume worrying that Kana is scared of her/hates her because she’s always looking flustered or running away when she gets near. Kotetsu and Uki know the truth though, that she’s got a massive crush and that’s why she’s acting that way. And Kana was really endearing here, she’s in her element when interacting with Hizume. And kudos to the episode, rather than stretch things out or leave it as a running gag by the end of the episode Hizume is now aware that Kana likes her and Kana is making steps to not get so flustered in her presence. Whether that’ll revert back to the status quo next episode though remains to be seen, I’d like to think this is a series where relationships can change and grow.

They are good girls.

Anything else you wanted to add? Just that this show continues to be adorable and I love these girls so much. What else is there to say really? I am looking forward to the tournament, I think that’ll give the show a different feel for the final episodes and that can only be a good thing. Besides we all know that Hizume’s previous cheer ~buddies~ are going to be at the tournament too, so that’ll be good for some drama! Other than that, same old Anima Yell and that’s always a good thing!

Hopefully!

Girls and Goals – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 9 Review

Girls and Goals – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 9

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 9.

So how’s this episode? Okay, so remember how I was all “doom and gloom” about new girl Kana joining the show last week–all afraid that her rampant tsun-ways were going to upset the fragile harmony of the show?

Vaguely, yes. Yeah… well I’m an idiot and you should probably never read my reviews again!

I already knew as much, but care to elaborate? While I won’t go as far as say I love her, I do like her presence now. She’s got a good dynamic with a couple of the girls and all in all I was silly to have ever thought that she could be an agent of change for the worse.

Fine I admit it, Kana’s cute, not that I care!

Uh-huh, great, now that’s out of the way what happens in the episode? Well with Kana on board the ‘cheer association’ is now officially a club and after blackmailing their apathetic teacher to be their club advisor–

Wait they do what?! Well it’s more that Kohane has some embarrassing information/footage of their teacher from back in the day (she was in the interpretive dance club in high school) and so Kohane casually throws that info in their. But let’s be real for a second, this teacher would’ve been their advisor regardless–she puts up a tough, jaded act but deep down she’s a sweetheart, I can tell these things.

Kohane extolling the “energy giving” virtues of cheer.

Right… so what happens next? Turns out their teacher has a new job for them to take on, they’re requested to cheer and perform at half-time at an elementary school’s soccer game–and Uki is none too happy about that because her little brother plays soccer and guess what, he doesn’t like ~girly things~ so much so that Uki has been telling her family that she’s on the track team as to avoid bringing up the whole “cheerleading” thing in front of her little brother.

It was a wild ride for sure…

Oh boy, how will she get out of this mess! I know you’re being condescending but this episode was surprisingly great, maybe my expectations were lowered because of last week but there were a lot of really funny moments as well as genuine warmth and heart. So the cheer club attends the game and Uki’s brother sees her sister in the cheerleading outfit and is embarrassed and angry, but it’s more because he had incorrect assumptions about what a cheerleader was really like (that and he was embarrassed by the fact that he’s not a “starter”). He watches his sister and the other girls cheer tirelessly the whole game, never once letting the enthusiasm falter and then when everyone else is resting at half time they still have to have the stamina and energy to perform a routine for everyone. Uki’s brother is impressed with his sisters and the others and has a newfound respect for the hard work that cheerleaders do.

Ganbatte!

Overall thoughts on the episode? It’s just a wholesome good time to be honest, every part of the episode just works really well–oh, well except one thing, but it’s almost not worth mentioning…

If you brought it up it means you want to mention it. Okay well during their routine (which is very cute by the way) there’s an insert song and sometimes a show will bother to translate the lyrics of the insert song–usually when the lyrics are relevant to the emotional beats of a scene. They do translate this song and I really wish they didn’t because the lyrics are just kind of bafflingly out-of-place, to the point where it actually ~detracts~ from the routine. I know it might seem like an inconsequential thing to mention but I thought I would anyway! Other than that, a top quality episode!

It’s a minor thing to note too but I loved the fact that this was a co-ed soccer team, don’t know if that’s common in Japan but it was still cool to see that the team wasn’t just a generic group of boys.

Get Well Tsun – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 8 Review

Get Well Tsun – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 8

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 8.

So how’s this episode? Hmm, I’m not sure.

Oh no… what’s wrong now… Nothing’s wrong with the episode per se~, its more or less on-point with how the show’s been travelling the last few episodes which is to say very good, consistently entertaining, and not to mention–

–Don’t say it! Kawaii desu~!

Uki’s head is just filled with gay thoughts for Kohane and I am absolutely okay with this!

Ugh. Hurry up and get to the “but”! But, this new girl they’ve introduced (I say introduced but she’s been lurking since the start of the series) I’m not sure how I feel about her… I mean she’s cute I guess and she’s funny I guess…

Spit it out! What’s the problem?! She’s the worst kind of tsun and I don’t want her to ruin this pure and wholesome show for me!

Absolutely necessary arrow.

You’re going to have to explain this in more detail for me… there are different kinds of “tsun”? Of course there is! But I’m not sure what it’s about her but she just pisses me off and I’m usually pretty okay with tsundere characters in general–even the irrationally violent ones–but her whole attitude towards Kohane, Uki and Kotetsu just put me off-base from the start and if she was like that around ~everyone~ and had good reason to be so that’d be fine but the fact that she becomes a starry-eyed mess around Hizume just made her behavior to the others more annoying.

Is this going to become a thing, like am I going to have to worry about… what’s her name? Kana.

She’s quick to go red, that’s for sure.

–Am I going to have to worry about Kana rants for the rest of these reviews?! I don’t know to be honest. Will she soften and become more amiable towards the other three? Probably. But what I’m personally worried about is her spoiling the well-established group dynamic.

Not to be rude but it seems like you’ve put way too much thought into this CGDCT show… Probably. I’ll probably be completely fine with her next week and pretend like this review never even happened, that’s kind of what I’m like, isn’t it?

Uki x Kohane forever.

Just a bit. So, uh, overall–excluding new girl Kana–what are your thoughts on this episode? It’s full of energy, there’s a bunch of great little comedic moments that had me laughing out loud, lots of great one-liners and character moments and even the cheer routine was a toe-tapping joy to watch! We got more Basketball Senpai (Great!) We got a brief appearance by lesbian girl who’s dating her tutor (Great!) So you know, all in all a great episode… great episode… just don’t spoil this for me Kana! I ~need~ this wholesome goodness in my life, damn it!

Piggy Bastard Does Not Dream Of Snacks – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 7 Review

Piggy Bastard Does Not Dream Of Snacks – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 7

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 7.

So how’s this episode? This show has a lot of really great and unexpected lines that set it apart from other CGDCT shows out there!

Why do I get the feeling you’ve been sitting on a particular ~thought~ for a while and are positively bursting to get it out there? I already made a tweet about it so it’s hardly a fresh thought but here it is anyway. There’s a moment early on where Kotetsu-chan is lamenting about her inability to notice Kohane’s insecurities about heights and instead be blinded by her own hang-ups about her weight when discussing who to be “on top” of their stunts from the previous episode. Cute and endearing moment in-of-itself, but Kotetsu refers to herself as a “buta yarou” which the subtitles correctly (or close to it) translate as “piggy bastard”. Why is this significant? Well if you’ve been following seasonal anime closely or my reviews you’ll know there’s a top-notch little show out there called ‘Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai’. And while its beloved by many, what isn’t looked too fondly on is its title. Not just because it’s kind of awkward and embarrassing to say aloud but for those of us who love accuracy to the Japanese original the “rascal” part of the title is a very loose translation. And it’s not just in the title of the show, even in the anime itself it translates “buta yarou” as “rascal”. Anyway, that’s a long tangent for what was essentially just one line of dialogue. TL;DR I’m happy the translators said “piggy bastard” as it’s more accurate than what another show translated “buta yarou” as.

Aww, Kotetsu-chan buta yarou.

You really need to get out of the house more… so uh, what happens in the episode? You know, of the show you’re ~actually~ supposed to be talking about? After some snack related shenanigans with Kotetsu whose diet starts and fails in a matter of minutes we then learn the why of Kohane’s fear of heights. Turns out in elementary school she climbed to the top of a swing set, thought she’d be able to fly when a gust of wind came past and wound up in hospital. The fact that all her friends and family were so worried about her made her never want to put them in that position again so she avoided heights at all costs after that. Afterwards the girls head to a ‘Cheer Shop’ and typical to these types of shows about hobbies/sports, the girls learn just how expensive all this ~professional~ tier kit is. The episode closes out with a story beat about how Hizume is having trouble connecting with her classmates and she worries they all hate her. Turns out the opposite is true, they’re all intimidated by her beauty and composure and it takes a common enemy–in the form of Kohane getting ‘too friendly’ with Hizume in front of them all for this situation to be rectified.

That’s a recipe for success!

That seems like a lot more than a usual episode, no? I think now we’ve got the cast more-or-less established and character types in place the show has a bit more freedom to speed through more smaller stories per episode. But it doesn’t make the show feel rushed or disjointed either these three segments are well-weaved together and also have the common thread of being ~observed~ by Kana, the redhead who’s been spying on them for 6 episodes now and who finally makes her intentions known.

How dare you! Whoever you are!

And they are? She thinks Hizume is too good for the ‘Cheer Association’! And that’s how the episode ends.

Fair enough, so overall thoughts? I think this is my favourite episode so far? While not as obviously ~feel good~ as the previous one, I liked the comedy better here, great character moments, this episode felt like there was more substance to it and I hope it continues like this going forward!

Just some cute girls trying on cute things.

Something To Cheer About – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 6 Review

Something To Cheer About – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 6

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 6.

So how’s this episode? Kawaii desu~!

Please stop doing that… it’s embarrassing… I can’t help it, I’ve just fallen head over heels for these cute cheerleader girls! They’re so wholesome and supportive of each other, it’s like a shot of pure happiness shot directly into my eyes!

The wings are metaphorical.

That’s kind of a violent image. Not what I intended at all, I assure you!

Also, can you stop with ending all your sentences with an exclamation mark(!) it’s off putting. No!

Grr, so what’s this episode about anyway? The girls of the ‘cheer association’ have hit the big time! By which I mean the moderately middle ground of being asked to perform at an “opening” of sorts… I’m not sure what it is exactly, I probably should have read that event poster that the show lingered on for like 12 seconds but it’s some sort of open-air event and there will be food and performances by local school groups and you know what that means?!

Poor Hizume, always worried everyone is going to leave the cheer club!

Not a clue… Training montage! The girls are going to perform a cheer routine in public, with a stunt too! Which means a week of hard training to make sure they’re in tip-top shape for the event! And so the day comes, or rather the rehearsal day comes and things go more or less okay… except new recruit Kotetsu is having ~performance anxieties~ but they’re a team and they’ll pull together by being together and wholesomeness and squee!

Kotetsu is adorable.

Please. Please don’t “squee” in my presence again… Tch! Anyway, the big day comes, they do their show and it’s not exactly perfect, there’s little errors here and there from everyone even the usually flawless Hizume ends up getting caught up in the moment and forgets a cheer midway through only to be helped out by Uki. And then, when they’re doing their high kicks, Kohane and Kotetsu’s kicks are vastly lower than the other two and that makes sense because they’re new and Kohane has issues with her physical flexibility and I just love that this show has such attention to detail to such little things! And thank goodness they’ve still never sort to resort to awkward CGI for these cheer sequences, I’ll take slow pans over still images any day of the week!

Cheer time!

So overall a good episode then? It’s terrific! Easily the best one yet, there’s laughs, there’s feels, there’s just an all-round atmosphere of positivity and it’s the kind of thing that reminds me why I watch CGDCT anime. This isn’t some genre breaking, deep and introspective classic, it’s just a darn good time with some adorable and endearing girls and sometimes that’s all you need!

Their teacher is amazing.

Food For Thought – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 5 Review

Food For Thought – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 5

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 5.

So how’s this episode? Kawaii desu~

Please don’t. Sorry, it’s just this show has grown on me a lot. And it’s not any one large specific thing that’s gotten me so smitten–it’s just a cute, fun and occasionally hilarious show with an emphasis on small character interactions and adorable moments and I just love it. It’s probably at this point in these reviews I should warn you that there’s no deep and meaningful analysis to be had, it’ll just be me fawning over this show and its characters.

Well that’s going to make for some truly riveting reading material… Actually one thing about this show that is somewhat interesting at least from a critical perspective is that I find myself remembering it ~more~ fondly after the fact–when I’m writing the review and compiling pictures–than I do when actually watching the show. There’s gotta be a term for that phenomena right, probably a German word…

Assume the position.

Probably. But don’t look at me, I’ve got no idea. So what’s the episode even about? (Trying to keep you on the straight and narrow here). It’s very slight in terms of actual plot, which was probably why I initially had a more lukewarm response while watching it. Basically it consists of Kotetsu’s ‘welcoming party’ to the “cheer association”, then some basic stretches and cheer training, then the group is invited to taste test the Home Ec club’s various dishes. The latter of which is just an excuse to watch cute girls eating delicious things and making the requisite noises and faces that come with. Then the episode ends with the girls finding out that the reason they were chosen to participate in the taste-test was because “Basketball Senpai” from the basketball club wanted to thank the girls for cheering for them last episode but was too shy to do it directly. So then the girls go and thank her for thanking them by cheering for them again during their practice. It’s an endless loop of thanks!

Naww, I low-key love “Basketball Senpai”

I think I’ll need to visit a dentist after reading that… too much sweetness… I know right?! Isn’t it the best!

That wasn’t a compliment. Boo.

Seems legit!

Anything else you want to add about the episode? Kotetsu is still my new best girl, she strikes a balance between shy and honest that I love. Also, there’s a fun little moment regarding the Summer uniforms with Uki having forgotten to wear hers while everyone else did. I don’t think we had that kind of thing in High School but I definitely remember wearing the sports uniform on non-sports days or vice versa and can totally relate to that ~awkward feeling~. At the end of the day this show kind of embodies a lot of relatable messages and experiences, despite being about something as far away from my interests as cheerleading. I guess some things in life are just universal.

Winter; left. Summer; right. I prefer the Winter uniforms tbh…

Fighting Form – ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 4 Review

Fighting Form – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Anima Yell!’ Episode 4

What’s the show? Anima Yell! Episode 4.

So how’s this episode? Okay, the show has finally won me over. I mean it’s still no ‘Comic Girls’ or ‘Slow Start’ but I’m finally ~feeling~ it!

That’s… good I suppose? What won you over specifically? I don’t think it’s any one thing I think I just finally got ~into~ this show’s take on cheerleading and how adorable and dorky and good-spirited and cheesy it is. Also it probably helps that the new girl they’ve added reminds me of Ebina from ‘Himouto! Umaru Chan’ and she’s one of my all time favourite best girls!

Cheer up, Kotetsu!

They’ve got another new girl? But weren’t you complaining in Episode 2 that it was already too many “badgering people to join their club episodes”? Yeah except with the exception of a single scene they don’t badger Kotetsu into joining. She already ~wants~ to join she’s just too self conscious about her, well… everything to get up the courage to participate. It isn’t until she comes to their first “rally” (cheering on the basketball club) that she realizes cheerleading is a team activity and that she won’t be alone and needn’t worry because she’ll have people supporting her! So wholesome!

You go, girl!

So how is their first cheerleading performance in front of an audience? Predictably silly at first but then surprisingly earnest afterwards—though I think I would’ve liked it to have been a little more rough around the edges since this is their first time performing for a group. But then again it’s a pretty simple routine they do, so I shouldn’t be ~too~ annoyed that they’re good at it.

Thankfully no creepy CG animations in their routine!

So now that the show has “won you over”, what does that mean exactly? Not a lot really, just means I’ve gone from being mildly indifferent towards watching the next episode to mildly anticipating it. Here’s hoping the show can continue to be sweet and endearing and fun and ~maybe~ throw in a little bit of depth like they had with the gay side character last week.

Thankfully a person in the audience knows a bit more English than Kohane!
