Irina and Matt Review ‘To Love-Ru’ Episode 1

Irina and I review ‘To Love-Ru’ Episode 1, because forcing your friends to watch your favourite shows is the best!

Hello everyone and welcome to a collaborative review series I’m imaginatively calling ‘Irina and Matt Review To Love-Ru’! And as the name suggests I’ll be joined throughout these reviews by Irina from I Drink And Watch Anime—say hello, Irina! Hello Irina! …I’m sorry, please don’t lock me in the closet again. I’ll do better…

Before we get into the review proper what were your thoughts when I brought up the idea about collaborating on an older series? (for those of you unaware Irina and I almost exclusively collaborate on currently airing seasonal anime and usually female driven sports anime). We have a very specific niche. I don’t think anyone else shares it… I like older anime but I think what I liked best was that you invited me to share my thoughts on an ecchi harem show. A lot of bloggers like the genres (I’m very surprised you’re not part of that new Ecchi Hunter blog to be honest) but I didn’t think I would ever get in on the action! For some reason I never get asked about my thoughts on naked girls. I need to rebrand. I’ll make sure to keep you ~abreast~ of ecchi in the future! (See what I did there?!)

No, but my pants are all of a sudden.

And what preconceptions or familiarity did you have with the To Love-Ru franchise? (Wow this is beginning to sound like a job interview…) It is… and none. I hadn’t heard of it before you told me about it, Matt. And since you said it was your favourite series I figure it’s lighthearted, funny a bit lewd and there’s no abusing the girls. Do those count as preconceptions?

Sounds about right! So with that out of the way it’s onto the review itself! These reviews won’t be recapping the events of the episode—for that content you can check out my solo reviews—the first of which is here. Were you surprised how “sci-fi” the prologue was? Very much, it snapped me at attention in fact. I was quite happy to see that. Is it just me though or did the opening tag look more “classic” than the rest of the episode? Like as soon as I saw it I thought, oh this is an OLD show but later on I was like nah, it’s just an oldish show… Am I making any sense? I never considered that (as I don’t have much experience with a lot of old anime–especially action sci-fi based ones) but now that you point it out the art style in the opening could very well have been a nod to older shows.

It’s a classic style.

As a fan of OP’s as I am too, what did you think of this one? I’m so sorry Matt, I don’t remember it. No please, the closet is dark and scary… I think I just got swept up by the episode and it got pushed out of my mind. I do remember the ED – it was cute. I pay better attention next time. Personally it’s one of my favourite of all time. Not only the song (“Forever We Can Make It” by Thyme) but the visuals—while simple I find very sexy.

How could you forget this?!

The first half of the episode introduces to our protagonist Rito and the fact that he’s extremely shy around girls—not especially unique for a harem protagonist but it also means he doesn’t spend his time ogling them. What did you think of Rito? This may sound bad but I mean it in a good way. As I was watching the first half I thought well this is an anime. For me, it embodied all the stereotypes I think people associate with generic anime. Like it’s exactly what you think of when you think anime. But I really liked that about it. It was comforting and fun. Rito is that nice but slightly awkward kid, who’s just enough of a loser to be relatable but still cool enough to cheer for. A very good audience surrogate and I’ll be happy to watch him. He was a bit on the pleasantly bland side for the first episode but that can be said about most shows.

You here that Rito? Even Irina thinks you’re bland!

Also established early on is his infatuation with Haruna—an infatuation started after a middle school incident wrongly painted him as destroying a school garden—and Haruna being the only one believing his innocence. What did u think of Haruna as a character and did you buy into this ‘connection’ of theirs? I actually like the connection. I make fun of anime characters for falling in love over the silliest things but honestly, that happens all the time. Heck, sometimes we fall in love over nothing at all. It’s believable to me. As for Haruna herself, I kept trying to figure out why she was giving me major deja vu all episode. I thought maybe I had seen her on promotional material but she looked so much more familiar than anyone else. It was only towards the end of the episode that I realized that she reminds me of Yukino from Kare Kano. Long story short, I got distracted. I like her, but I need to see where the character goes!

She can talk to me any day…

And then of course there’s the elephant in the room—or rather the pink haired alien in the bath tub. Lala; who is the embodiment of pure joy and life, makes her introduction. What are your first impressions of her? She’s the one that really made the show feel like Tenchi Muyo for me. That’s a good thing! I like her transformation but it seems painful for her.

I think my opinions of Lala are pretty clear given I just referred to her as “the embodiment of pure joy and life” and not to spoil too much but she only gets better from episode 3 onwards. And then we get a surprisingly good-looking action scene as Lala summons one of her “inventions” to combat her pursuers (who are actually just employees of the royal palace wanting her to go home—as she’s just a teenage runaway). Sometimes 3D can look jarring against 2D, especially with a series of this age but I thought her octopus vacuum looked perfect. What did you think of this whole segment of the episode? Agreed, it was integrated well and fun to watch. It is impressively fluid for an older show. Mind you this thing may have had a BUDGET. Seems the manga did really well so the studio may have secured decent funding. If so they made good use of it, if not, then those are truly impressive visuals.

Who doesn’t have access to a giant robotic vacuum cleaner octopus?

And then finally the end of the episode which has Haruna confronting Rito only for him to decide this is the moment to confess his “true feelings” for her. Which—of course—backfired horribly as Lala appears and assumes he’s talking to her! Oh no a love triangle through misunderstanding! How bizarre! Joking aside, the first episode was fun. Taken separately a lot of the elements and characters are pretty stereotypical but they are put together well and somehow it’s just a bit left of expectations. You know, just unusual enough to keep you interested while being comfortably familiar. The only thing I would have liked is for Lala to be just a little less helpless. But you really can’t tell much from just the first episode. It’s a strong start. I would have watched more if I didn’t want to avoid confusing the episodes before we review them.

My thoughts on the episode as a whole can be found in the link previously mentioned, but what about you Irina, what were your thoughts on this as a first episode? Anything else you wanted to add? I should really read ahead when we do these things… I already put down my thoughts. As for “add”, how about you share with us a piece of your To Love-Ru merch?

Sure, that oughta spice up these reviews! Probably one of my favourite things I picked up on my most recent trip to Japan was this Lala ⅙ scale bishoujo figure made by Alter. Obviously her “normal” outfit, as seen after her transformation scene is more striking but I just found this figure so sexy that I had to have it. The detail on it is so good, even something as inconsequential as the tread on her sneakers has such fine details, I love it!

The lighting isn’t the best in my office, sadly.

Also – I disagree with your review about the breast physics. Some scenes are great but others really could use some more jiggle. Just saying. Just wait ‘til we get to ‘To Love-Ru Darkness’ the amount of jiggles will give you whiplash!

Irina’s face if she ever gets to watching ‘To Love Ru-Darkness’.

And that’s the first episode done! From here on out we’ll be releasing these collaborative reviews covering 3 episodes at a time every month. However, you’ll still be getting my single episode QandA reviews every week! Thanks for reading!

Making A Splash – ‘To Love-Ru’ Episode 1 Review

An Introduction and Review Schedule for the ‘To Love-Ru’ Anime QandA Special Series of Reviews

The Episode Review

What’s the show? To Love-Ru Episode 1.

Episode 1 Title Card. Perhaps a Nicolas Roeg reference?

So tell me about this show you’ve decided to commit 2 years of your life reviewing every single episode (because that’s how long its going to take)? Wow, straight in their with the big questions, huh?

I mean nows a good a time as any, is it not? Sure. I mean, I love everything about this show and if you care to follow me over the next two years you’ll find out exactly why. What follows is an absolutely biased look at a series I’ve deified in my mind for about a year now so don’t go expecting nuanced critique–but likewise expect a lot of references to things that have yet to happen in the series. In other words, this is pretty much for fans of the series only. Or those who don’t mind spoilers for future episodes.

It’ll be a while before we meet him.

But it’s an ecchi series, how many spoilers can it contain anyway?! I thought this too, until I sat down to watch Episode 1 again for the first time in… maybe like 9 months? Either way, To Love-Ru’s first episode is an impressive piece of art that’s almost hard to quantify and even harder to compare against the rest of the series that is to come.

And why’s that? Because Episode 1 is emblematic of everything that made this series inherently bingeable in the first place, it’s fast paced and frenetic and fun and… not really anything like the other subsequent 3 seasons of To Love-Ru that come after.

Best OP visuals ever.

Okay, I think you’re getting ahead of yourself. Let’s just focus on this episode and this season, yeah? Fair point. So the series starts with Lala, in space, in her spaceship being pursued by a convoy of “attackers” insistent on reclaiming her. And already a more action heavy tone is being set to a series which will ostensibly become an Earth bound, slice of life centric ecchi.

We get jiggle physics 30 seconds into the show. Good stuff!

What did I say about reviewing this episode, not what’s to come?! Sorry. I’ll try and restrain myself on that part.

Sure sure, so what happens next? Well to cut a long story short, Lala’s spaceship crashes into the school of our male protagonist Rito Yuuki–who himself is already preoccupied with courting the girl of his dream, classmate Haruna Sairenji. A wholesome, very good-girl who you should probably not get too attached to if you intend to follow this series unto its fruition…

Cute from any angle.

Please. Please stop with the not so subtle future spoilers, it’s doing me a harm. Okay, I promise that’s the last time! (Spoilers; it’s not the last time).

Okay so what happens next then. So after another failed attempt for Rito confessing his feelings for Haruna he returns home to lick his wounds when his peaceful bathtime is interrupted by Lala’s sudden (naked) appearance in front of him. From here things quickly progress as Lala introduces herself, her robotic costume maker ‘Peke’ and her general situation which basically amounts to the fact that she’s a teenage runaway who’s sick of being told who she should marry by her father. In short; Lala is an alien princess and genius inventor who is somewhat indifferent to the human race but she’s put her trust in a “bland” human because he was too much of a ‘good guy’ to let her get captured by the royal guards of her home planet–shenanigans ensue.

Lala changing into her trademark costume. Love it!

“Shenanigans” Why do I get the feeling I’m not going to like where this is going? I don’t know what you’re inferring, sir…

Don’t play dumb with me, I can literally scroll down the page and see you have a segment of this review called “The Fanservice Review”… While I’ll go to my grave defending how good the characterisation is in this series, I fully admit that the majority of people who clicked this review are just here for ~dem anime tiddies~ and yeah, that’s where this review will soon pivot. But I’m not quite done yet.

Okay what happens next? Well Rito is walking to school the next morning, lamenting having intervened with Lala when Haruna approaches him, she wants to talk about what he was doing running across the roof with a strange girl last night (she caught a glimpse of him while walking her dog) but he interrupts taking this as the opportunity to confess his feelings for her. He pours out his feelings, all the while bowing his head only for Lala to have appeared between the two of them. Lala misunderstands and thinks he’s talking to her and reciprocates his feelings, further upping the ante by suggesting they get married!

Well that escalated quickly!

Oh boy, you weren’t wrong about shenanigans. Anything else you wanted to add before we get to the other kind of “shenanigans”? Well if you’ll allow me to get meta for just a moment I’d like to speak about how different my first viewing vs this viewing was.

So Japanese of Rito to be worrying about people wearing shoes in his room.

Go on then. The first time I watched ‘To Love-Ru’ I was intrigued but not blown away, a part of that may have been how much the first episode was trying to impart while simultaneously give gratuitous air-time to its ecchi moments. Likewise I was enamoured with Haruna (Rito’s “since middle school” crush) but kind of annoyed by Lala–despite her good points. Now, with hindsight clouding my objectivity I can say Lala steals the show, even though this Lala isn’t really indicative of the Lala who will come to consume the screen time of the coming 25 episodes. Episode 1 Lala is far more measured and calculated than true Lala which will rear her awesome insanity in its full come Episode 3. But I suppose it’s something of a blessing we weren’t inundated with Lala’s full ‘Lala’ right off the bat. Which leads us too…

The Fanservice Review

Is there any particular reason I have to be here? I have no interest in discussing fan service? Because I like to see you suffer.

Wow, not even pretending now? Okay fine, let’s get this over with… how is the fan service in the first episode? It’s kind of remarkable in how right they get it and how quickly too. I’ve mentioned in various places before that I think Kentaro Yabuki (the original mangaka) is probably my favourite artist in terms of how he draws the female body and while the animation and art style of the everyday scenes is ~good~ but nothing mind-blowing the same can not be said for the fan service. It’s clear that the show knew it needed to execute that particular part of the series flawlessly if it was to be well-received and while I can’t speak for its reception in Japan at the time I can say at least for me I was impressed.

Showin’ some tail.

Uh-huh and what about it makes it so impressive? It’s kind of hard to put into words, you kind of need to see it in motion–thankfully that’s what gifs are for!

Oh boy… There’s a weight to the animation of the breast physics, when Rito’s hands cup Lala’s breasts in the bath its like you could almost touch them yourself they seem so real. And this isn’t even the best the show gets in terms of animation quality and attention to detail.

Yep, finished. #TMI

And what about Lala herself? She’s beautiful, she’s cute, she’s sexy–she’s basically the perfect (anime) woman–well except for a certain black haired goddess but we’ll talk more about her when she appears later in the series. Plus her openness and liberated attitude about her body is very refreshing, it’s something that makes Lala so endearing as a character.

Lala’s appears in the bath before Rito. Good technology!

And the other girls? Well the only fan service we get from Haruna is a fantasy sequence in which Rito’s best friend Saruyama goads him into fantasising about her in a bikini–it’s a brief pan over a still image but it’s still well drawn. Haruna’s a very sweet girl who I have some minor issues with but I won’t bring them up until they are more relevant to the episode in discussion. And then of course there’s the girl that is the Internet perverts favourite for lewding (at least if the sheer number of fan-art and doujin’s are anything to go by)–Rito’s little sister Mikan.

Always imagining.

“Little sister” should I have the FBI on speed dial? Jokes aside Mikan is something of a grounding force for the series, especially as it progresses into seasons 3 and 4 (getting ahead of myself again, I know) but even in her two brief scenes her character is already solidified–in her wry sense of humour and almost parental authority over Rito. In any other series a character as “normal” as Mikan could be a detriment but here she’s a delightful antidote to the craziness. But the show doesn’t feel the need to lewd her (yet lol)

Mikan is Sassy AF.

The Conclusion

So final thoughts and score for Episode 1 of ‘To Love-Ru’? Unable as I am to really give a first impression of the series as this is the second time watching it all I can say is that this first episode was even better than I remembered. Obviously a lot of that will be because of the fondness I’ve acquired for these characters over the 80 subsequent episodes I watched after but it’s also an expertly crafted 24 minutes of comedy, romance, sci-fi action, ecchi and even a bit of intrigue. It’s already done a great job at establishing Rito’s personality (his almost comical embarrassment in the face of any kind of nudity) as well as the connection between him and Haruna. If I were to complain about anything it was the aforementioned characterisation of Lala which feels out of step with the rest of the series but I think it can be excused given the tone it was trying to strike with the whole seriousness of “being pursued by bad-guys” shtick. My score for the episode is 93 out of 100, while my score for the fan service is 80 out of 100.

Good guy Rito.

As you can see Irina and I will be covering  3 episodes at a time and doing so once a month (except for episodes that’ll arguably have more to talk about like Episode 1, 25 and 26–hence why they are slated as single episode collaborations). As for the rest of the franchise (i.e Motto To Love-Ru, To Love-Ru Darkness and To Love-Ru Darkness 2nd) I will continue solo reviews of those after the 15th of February 2020; whether Irina decides to continue the collaboration will be dependent on whether she enjoyed the first series enough to continue watching as she’s never watched the series before and could very well hate it! So look forward to my single episode Anime QandA style reviews starting Saturday 8th of June and then Irina and I’s collaborative reviews the week after and then monthly thereafter.

Now, if your question is why so much ‘To Love-Ru’ content? Well that’s simple really, its my favourite anime series of all time and I just wanted to talk about it at length and document my thoughts during the rewatch in a writing style I enjoy. And as for why the collaboration with Irina? Surely I can’t be the only one who forces persuades a friend to watch something they really enjoy with them? Right?!

New Blogging Schedule

A post detailing the new blogging schedule which promises more content for the site going forward!

Hello everyone, first of all I’d like to apologise for the somewhat ~negative~ spin the content on my site has taken over the past few weeks months also the general lack of content altogether. I’ve been working through some things, trying to get myself in the right headspace to continue blogging in a more structured, full-time capacity like I used to do. I’ve come to the conclusion that despite my seemingly laissez-faire attitude towards the blogging process I do in fact need structure in order to produce positive content–and POSITIVITY is the key going forward! Starting from June 3rd I’ll be posting almost every day of the week, with a specific ~type~ of post going out on each given day. The schedule is as follows:

Seasonal Anime Weekly

As the name (hopefully) suggests this’ll be my thoughts on each of the seasonal anime I’m watching week-to-week. As with the current season I still intend to watch 15+ new anime each week as watching seasonally is something I adore and so this weekly post will be a rundown on my thoughts on each new episode of a currently airing seasonal anime I watched just all in the one place. Kind of like my “Watched But Not Reviewed’ series of posts I used to do, just with a less confusing name. (Note: These posts won’t start until July when the new anime season starts, seems kind of silly to start this nearly two thirds of a way through the current season).

Listing Compulsive

I’ve been using the ‘Listing Compulsive’ blog category on for all my Top 10 lists but don’t be ashamed if you don’t recognise the name, I don’t think I’ve every referred to the name in the introduction to any of my lists (maybe the very first one). But yeah basically this’ll be a weekly anime or manga related top 10 list. Simple as that!

Random Content

What’s life without a little spontaneity? Basically, Wednesday’s will be home to things like my travel posts, merch spotlights and whatever other random content that doesn’t fit into the other categories already assigned.

QandA Manga Reviews

I’ve done a few of these already but as the name implies it’s just reviews of manga in my trademark (ha!) QandA style. Every so often I might throw in an ‘Anime vs Manga’ post instead of a manga review.

Seasonal Collab Review [Every Second Week]

Nothing’s gonna stop me from collaborating with Irina (of fame) on a weekly basis! Obviously these posts will alternate between appearing on her site and mine each week hence the “[Every Second Week]” addendum.

‘To Love-Ru’ Anime QandA Special Series

Okay, so in what I’m calling my “passion project”, each Saturday will see a post dedicated to my favourite anime series of all time ‘To Love-Ru’ (that’s including all the sequel seasons FYI). What this entails is basically a smorgasbord of content, episodic reviews, anime to manga comparisons, maybe even a couple of sneaky collabs if I’m lucky! It’s likely to take at least 100 weeks to go through all the content I want to, hence why its earning a semi-permanent spot on the schedule!

And that’s it for the schedule, obviously things are subject to change, posts might be delayed or moved to different days given IRL circumstances, and of course there’s always the chance a seasonal show captivates me enough to talk about it week-to-week. Also one more piece of site related housekeeping, in the interest of making this site more positive I won’t be posting parts 2 and 3 of my ‘Critical of Criticism’ rants–I don’t feel like they’re in-line with what I want for the site going forward. The only reason I’m keeping the post up at all is because of the supportive comments I got from Pete and Crow which helped fuel this “new” direction for the site. Other than that though this is more than likely the future of Anime QandA, I hope it looks interesting and I’ll see you again in the next post!

One Year Anniversary Of AnimeQandA

Milestone achieved – one year of AnimeQandA

Can you believe it?! As of today it’s been 365 Days or 52 weeks or 12 months or 1 year (however you like to express it) since I first started this site! My very first post on AnimeQandA was a 20 Question Review of ‘Amagi Brilliant Park’. Looking back on it now it was a bit rough around the edges and adhered to a formula I’m no longer conforming to (the 20 Question format) but it’s still a fun little post that’s remained very unseen (as I type this it only has 1 like!). It wasn’t until I got the supportive ‘bump’ from Raistlin and Irina that the numbers started to tick up, the interactions increased and I felt myself truly a part of this wonderful aniblogging community! And while things are different from back then–I review episodic seasonal anime now and I have a job (which I didn’t when I started)–I still feel a great deal of enjoyment from blogging everyday. And a big part of that reason is you, the reader, regardless of whether you’ve been following me for a long time or a little while, I sincerely thank you for listening to my words on a subject I hold so dearly.

Here’s to many more years of anime and just as many talking about it with all of you!

“Do You Want To Build A Shonen?” Tag – The Weather

Participating in the “Do You Want To Build A Shonen?” Tag, with my world-building contribution on ‘The Weather’.

So there’s this tag which seems like a bit of fun (plus as a fan of ‘Frozen’ that name is amazing!), I’ve never contributed to something like this before but Arthifis tagged me (and said some nice things about me too!) so I figured, why the heck not and decided to give it a go!

General Rules:

  1. Copy the post you were tagged in (From the Rules down, include links to each person’s post. Exclude that person’s personal comments and their tag choice, of course.)
  2. Read the general rules Here (the post will be updated as new rules appear)
  3. According to the rules for the current section, write your piece of the post.
  4. Tag a post of someone who has not yet been tagged. (Give them 3 days or so to accept, if they don’t you can choose someone else to keep the tag moving.)
  5. If you accept a tag, try and get the next piece written within a week, so things keep moving at a decent pace.
  6. Have fun!!!

Rules – Section 1: Setting/Worldbuilding

  1. Use between 100 and 300 words (a little overflow is ok but don’t go too wild), to add a piece to the setting of our Shonen world. Feel free to draw on various types of Shonen tropes, but make sure that your part of the setting follows a certain “Theme.” Themes can be such things as “Magic system”, “Politics”, “Geography”, “Technology”, “Organizations”, etc.
  2. Make sure to label the “Theme” of your piece of the world setting at the top of your section, as demonstrated below.
  3. Try not to duplicate themes.
  4. You can go into as much or as little detail as you want, as long as you stay within the word limit.
  5. Have fun with stuff, but try and make things fit into the pre-existing pieces of the world setting.

Themes already created:

So, what am I going to add to this little world we’re creating, well the weather of course! Though hopefully it’ll be a bit more interesting than the weather we’re all used to and lead to some plot developments later on!

~The Weather~

Flux Storms are unpredictable and violent weather systems of raw magic energy that sweep across the landscape with little notice or prediction. They only last for minutes at a time but for anyone caught up in these magical tempests the usual outcome is an overflow of magic which renders the victim comatose–the mind unable to deal with this surge of energy. While a relatively recent phenomena (the last ten years or so) no one who has been caught up in a Flux Storm has ever awoken…

Flux Storms, while generally feared for by the populous can be avoided by seeking shelter in a rune-enhanced dwellings. Modern housing comes enhanced with runic protection but it’s an expensive service that not everyone can afford. There are those who do not fear the Flux Storms however, believing greater magical abilities can be afforded to those who do not fear the storms and instead embrace them. Different factions have different views: some seek to harness the high level of magical energy the storms output through science, while others have formed disorganised cults that wish “to be one with the flux”, though all have failed so far at taming this wild weather.

And that’s my input to the tag, hopefully it can tie into what’s come before! I didn’t tie any of the specific political factions that Arthifis mentioned in their post to anything in my post just to keep things open-ended. Whether this becomes a main part of the story or if this is just a facet of the world, I guess we’ll see in future instalments of this tag!

Now I have to tag someone to continue with this, if you don’t want to participate then let me know in the comments and I’ll tag someone else. I pick Scott!

Thanks again to Arthifis for tagging me and AstralGemini for making this tag! Hope you all enjoyed my contribution!

Awards Tag – Brotherhood of the World Blogger Award

Awards Tag – Brotherhood of the World Blogger Award

Been a while since you’ve done one of these, eh? An award tag? Yeah… almost like nobody is nominating me…

Ahem I mean us.

You’re kidding of course? Of course, after all seems like most of the bloggers I follow are too busy producing really high quality content. Like seriously so many good ‘essay’ style posts out there, kinda makes my episodic reviews feel a bit lackluster by comparison…

Enough feeling sorry for youself you have an award tag to do! Oh right!

So what’s this one and who nominated you? It’s The Brotherhood of the World blogging award! And I was nominated by Irina!

Great, and I take it there are some rules before we get down to the meat of the post? Yup:

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
2. Answer the questions sent to you.
3. Nominate around 10 others.
4. Create your own set of questions for your nominees and display the rules.

Cool, and now for Irina’s questions, yeah? Mmhmm! And they’re good ones too (it’s most of the reason I’m doing this tag in the first place!)

1. Who’s the last anime character you identified with and why?

This was a hard one to answer, I don’t think I’ve ever fully identified with an anime character, rather I gravitate towards portions of their personality. The more I thought about it though the more I kept coming back to Kazuki Kazumi from the Grisaia series–specifically in Eden of Grisaia. I really relate to her deadpan sense of humour, her calm nature under pressure, her logical mind and her vaguely perverted outlook. Also, like her, I too am a genius whose mind is being used by a corrupt government to power an all-knowing super computer. What? It could be true, as far as you know!

2. Is there an anime universe you would want to live in?

Another tough question but for different reasons, I thought about the life I have now and where I’d ~ideally~ like to live, the answer to that question is my life is pretty good but I’d always like to live in Japan. However, I could pick any ol’ slice of life show to live in and then “BAM” I’d be in Japan–but that hardly makes for the most compelling answer now does it? Plus my life would more or less be the same as it is now just with extra Otaku. So instead, I pick the ‘Konosuba’ anime universe! Why? Because I get to be an adventurer in a fantasy world that’s ~vaguely~ threatening but not really plus there’s that kinky succubus club I could visit whenever I felt like it.

3. I hope you answered the last question – what would your job be in that universe?

I know I said adventurer, but let’s face it–I’d probably be a bartender or something… unless I get to be a woman in that other world! In which case I’d *censored* all the *censored* and then *censored* the *censored*!

4. Who would you like to do a collab with (real or imaginary)

Do you mean “collaborate” in the physical sense? Because I’ve got a list of waifus who I’d like to do the ‘horizontal collab’ with? …Oh you mean on my blog, ahahaha… why didn’t you say so… ahem… I could collab with any of the vaguely ‘writer’ types, maybe someone like Futaba from Persona 5… oh wait I’m still thinking of the ‘horizontal collab’ aren’t I….

5. Is there a character trait (physical or personality) that you always love to see?

And so that’s the five questions… man you have some issues… This is true.

So what now, don’t you have to nominate some people and come up with your own questions? Probably, but I’m gonna cheat and just say whoever I nominate can answer Irina’s questions instead–can’t be bothered coming up with questions of my own!

Fair enough… I suppose… so who are you nominating? I’ve got a few people in mind (not 10 though, that’s a crazy number, I’ll settle for 5)… though if you don’t want to participate feel free to ignore this! I don’t mind!

We done now? I got places to be… Sure you do. Thanks for reading, hope these answers weren’t too awkward (but let’s face it, you’re pretty much all expecting these kind of answers from me at this point…)

Site Update – 200 Followers and Summer Review Schedule

A Site Update concerning reaching 200 Followers, the AMA to follow and the review schedule for Summer 2018 Anime

Hey everyone just a quick-ish update about a few things. Firstly, I mentioned it on Twitter a week or so ago but I’ve hit 200 WordPress followers! Truly an exciting milestone and I have all of you to thank for it! I’m planning on doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) post in celebration so if you have any questions for me either send me a tweet with a question or DM me if you want to keep it a secret! I’ll have more to say about hitting this milestone in that eventual post!

Also, not-so quick update about the Summer 2018 Anime Review Schedule for the site! As much as I’d like to keep reviewing every show I watch every week there’s simply not enough time to do so, so unfortunately some shows had to be cut—I’ll still keep watching them (unless of course they do something to annoy me) but unless they have a particularly interesting or noteworthy episode you won’t see reviews of the following Summer 2018 Anime shows:

Angels of Death
Attack On Titan Season 3
Banana Fish
Grand Blue Dreaming
Phantom of the Twilight

As for the review schedule itself; it’ll look something like this (Also bear in mind these are going off Australian times so they may look like they’re running earlier if you live in a different timezone):

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (10am~ AEST)
The Master of Ragnarok & the Blesser of Einherjar (5pm~ AEST)
Harukana Receive (Collab with Irina, will alternate week-to-week between my site and hers, post time will usually be 10pm~ AEST)

Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou (10am~ AEST)
Island (4pm~ AEST)
Hanebado! (10pm~ AEST)

Asobi Asobase (10am~ AEST)
Music Girls (10pm~ AEST)

My Hero Academia Season 3 (10am~ AEST)
Dropkick On My Devil! (10pm~ AEST)

Steins;Gate 0 (10am~ AEST)
How Not To Summon A Demon Lord (Midnight~ AEST)

Seven Senses of the Re’Union (10am~ AEST)
Happy Sugar Life (Midnight~ AEST)

Chio’s School Road (10am~ AEST)
Cells At Work! (Midnight~ AEST)

In addition to these posts I’m hoping to squeeze in the occasional Top 10 List and full season anime/manga reviews (probably 1 a week) but no promises as since I have a casual job I can be called in at short notice and this is about as much as I can 100% commit to. Hopefully I haven’t disappointed too many people with the shows I’ve decided not to cover! Thanks for reading, and remember to ask me a question (or multiple questions) for the AMA. I haven’t set a deadline, I’ll just answer them once I feel like I’ve got a decent amount of questions for a post!

2 Neat 2 Curious (Real Neat Blog Award) – Untold Questions

An Award Tag about the Real Neat Blog Award

Hey-o! Another award! Two in fact! That’s right, hence the ridiculously lame blog title… this time I was nominated by Aldael and Shaddowcat99!

So what are the rules for this award tag?

  1. Display the award logo.

  2. Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog.

  3. Answer their questions.

  4. Nominate 5 to 10 bloggers.

  5. Ask 7 questions.

Great! So let’s get on with the questions since there’s twice as many this time! Right! First off Aldael’s questions.

  • How and when do you usually watch anime?
Always on the television, through the PS4’s various anime apps (Crunchyroll, AnimeLab, Funimation Now) and usually in the evening. Except on the weekends when it’s usually most of the day and night.
  • How many people know about anime being your hobby? How do they react to it?
I don’t know that many people irl (sad I know right) but I don’t hide it, I’m proud of my geeky hobby. And whenever somebody I don’t know asks about it, I’ll go ahead and tell them that anime is my hobby until their eyes glaze over and they lose interest entirely.
  • Which two anime series you would choose to make a crossover of?
This is a difficult question, so many to pick from! I guess I’ll go for the one that’d make the most interesting show and say a crossover between Steins;Gate and Assassination Classroom, for reasons I won’t get into lest I spoil the latter…
  • Which anime portrays food in the tastiest way?
Probably Food Wars! Gotta love attractive anime girls in close proximity to food, wait that’s not what you meant by ‘tasty’ is it?
  • What’s the tastiest vegetable?
My initial reaction was to say Potato, because I love potatoes (specifically chips) but thinking about potatoes aren’t actually tasty by themselves you usually have to add fats and salt and seasoning to add to the effect. So strictly based on the vegetable itself without adding anything extra, my answer would be a chilli pepper.
  • What’s the tallest place you’ve ever been at?
Landmark Tower in Yokohama, Japan, I actually stayed in a hotel room on the 54th floor—its the second tallest building in Japan.
  • You find yourself in a middle of a desert with a lion, a jaguar, a puma and a tiger surrounding you from all the sides. Which way do you go?
I dig down so they can’t find me and then hopefully wake up from this nightmare!

So that’s one batch of questions down, next lot please! The second lot is a bit different, Shaddowcat was inspired by the questions given to her by Lina and so they are… well you’ll catch on soon enough.

I like the idea of hats, but hats don’t like the idea of me. Apparently my head is too big and they just look weird on me. Everyone says so… Oh well!

Like blow-up dolls? That’s where my head went first… but no thank you… I’ll take my dakimakura over those cheap plastic creations any day!

The first thing I think of is Pyramid Song by Radiohead. One of my favourite non-anime songs of all time.

We’ve got a pet bird, it’s a cockatiel named Bella and it’s noisy and hateful.

I actually like the dentists, weird huh? I never used to, I had a super bad experience when I was a teenager where the dentist was actually standing on the chair trying to rip a particularly stubborn tooth out of my mouth. Ever since then whenever I go to the dentist I just kind of think ‘nothing could be as bad as that’ and just kind of mellow out and enjoy all the attention.

I prefer tacos, or nachos, or enchiladas, or taquitos. But they’re okay I guess!

This Video?

I have that exact image on a t-shirt, does that answer your question?

Well that was different, but good different! Yeah that was a lot of fun, in fact for my set of questions I’m going to do the same, mostly because it’s a lot easier than coming up with original questions, but also because it might be fun for some others to partake! But first the nominees, as always there’s no obligation to participate if you’ve already done it or are too busy or just don’t feel like it!

Slice of Alfredo
Ayappi’s Room
The Animanga Spellbook

Cool, and you’re questions? All one word questions, this oughta be fun!

Suitably vague, terrific. All done then? Yep, thanks everyone for reading and thanks again to Aldael and Shaddowcat99 for the nominations!
