10 Best Waifu’s of Summer 2019 Anime

My 10 Best Waifu’s of the Summer 2019 Anime season

summer19waifu

Too many waifu’s, too little time! With a new season (almost) completed it’s time for me to countdown my 10 Best Waifu’s of Summer 2019 Anime!

~Number 10~
Hibiki Sakura from ‘How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift?’

Tasty waifu.

This show has such high quality waifu potential that honestly any of the girls were deserving of a spot (from an aesthetic point of view I think Akemi is a favourite) but I chose our main main girl Hibiki over the others for a couple of reasons. One she’s got a unique look, she might look like a ‘gal’ but she’s a movie buff and lover of all types of food, she’s got an energetic personality and is very relatable in her weight-loss struggle. Also her voice actress is first timer Egyptian-Japanese which adds a wonderful noticeable difference to the character’s personality.

~Number 9~
Sayu Tsukisaka from ‘Re:Stage! Dream Days’

She’s got all the right moves!

I’m a sucker for an angry fang-girl, or just a fang-girl in general–okay let’s be honest any and every anime girl–but let’s not understate the appeal of it in certain circumstances. Not only is Sayu super cute but she’s got a fiery temper and is loyal to her best friend.

~Number 8~
Asuka Suzumori from ‘Are You Lost?’

Why are her hands in the way, dammit!

Some of this season’s sexiest visuals have come courtesy of this show and it’s probably no coincidence that Asuka has probably supplied the most of them and has ended up on this list. Sexy shenanigans aside Asuka is a genki, upbeat sports girl with a bit of a stupid streak but that just makes her all the more endearing!

~Number 7~
Tilarna Exedilica from ‘Cop Craft’

She deserves happiness! Such a good girl.

Tilarna is inescapably interesting, not only as a character in this show but as a waifu in general she’s a strong independent warrior from another world thrust into a world where she’s not only an outsider but often vilified just because of her race. She’s also cute, feisty and just a little bit sexy.

~Number 6~
Yuika Koga from ‘Hensuki: Are you willing to fall in love with a pervert, as long as she’s a cutie?’

And very much not a good girl.

I’m not a masochist, I don’t have any of those particular tendencies and really don’t see the appeal of being stepped on, but damn if Yuika ain’t the cutest little thing, she almost makes me want to be her slave for life… almost.

~Number 5~
Haruhime from ‘Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon II?’

Protecc Haruhime!

The whole ‘prostitute with a heart of gold’ may be a trope in Western media, but in anime it’s kind of unheard of (at least as far as I know). So seeing a character as tragic as Haruhimi having to endure the circumstances of her unfair existence is indeed evoking of sympathy. But Haruhime is more than just a victim, she’s a well rounded character with immaculate character design and an all round beautiful person.

~Number 4~
Tamaki Kotatsu from ‘Fire Force’

Hot stuff.

Forgetting for a second all the endlessly stupid complaints about her character ‘trait’, Tamaki is an absolute goddess; she’s sexy, she’s fun and she’s a badass fighter with a neko-girl aesthetic, what’s not to love?! The only reason she isn’t higher on the list is because we’ve only seen a little bit about her but she’s definitely destined for the pantheon of waifu’s.

~Number 3~
Hitoha Hongo from ‘O Maidens In Your Savage Season’

The one girl I couldn’t find a decent gif for.

Oh, Hongo… you frustrated, tortured little genius when will you understand your overwhelming worth as a person. It’s weird talking about Hongo as a waifu because she’s so real and fully rounded as a character and has such depth and believability that she’s kinda beyond being a “waifu” and just a girl I’d like to date. Is that weird? Probably, but I don’t care.

~Number 2~
Yuuko Yoshida from ‘The Demon Girl Next Door’

The best transformation.

If there were a venn diagram with ‘sexy’, ‘funny’ and ‘cute’ square in the middle of it would be Yuuko, the adorkable demon girl with a heart of gold and a god-tier chest in front of it. From her overall design, her voice acting, her personality and her comedic timing, Yuuko is just an absolute treasure and I love every minute of her being on-screen.

~Honourable Mention~
Sempai from ‘Magical Sempai’

Ta da!

I felt kind of obliged to include the titular (pun absolutely intended) Sempai from ‘Magical Sempai’ because she is a busty, dumb fun girl who’s just a heck of a lot of fun to be around. She’s not worthy of my Top 10 because the lack of characterisation (I mean she doesn’t even have a name she’s just referred to as ‘sempai’ throughout the whole series) means forming a connection to her is especially hard but it’s hard to deny her appeal!

~Number 1~
Yue from ‘Arifureta’

Nom.

I could write an entire post about how much I love Yue, few anime characters have made an impression on me as quickly as she did and continue to do so with every passing moment from their first appearance. Not only is she impossibly cute but being that she’s a 500 year old vampire loli means she’s also got an innocence to her overall seductiveness. As far as personality goes, she’s precocious, intelligent, loyal and level-headed–what more could you ask for?!

And that’s this seasons’ list! I’d love to know which waifu’s made your favourite list this time so let me know in the comments below and as always thanks for reading!

10 Best Waifu’s of Spring 2019 Anime

My 10 Best Waifu’s of the Spring 2019 Anime season

spring19waifus

The seasonal tradition of counting down the best waifu’s of the season continues! In previous seasons I’ve struggled to narrow down the sheer wealth of waifus down to just 10 but there was something ~lacking~ about this season that meant I had no problem finding 10 girls for the list. Somewhat a mixed blessing as it made for a rather straightforward decision process! Here we go counting down the 10 Best Waifu’s of Spring 2019 Anime!

~Number 10~
Akane Ukita from ‘Cinderella Nine’

I mean sure, this image is from the mobile game, but unlikely are you going to find a pic of her this cute from the anime! (Spoiler alert, the anime is cheap looking)

Interminably shy, insecure but still high-spirited nonetheless. Aside from being physically cute (where can I get a hoodie with cat ears?!) watching her slow but steady rise from inexperienced at baseball to… adequate(?) is a level of adorable-ness all of its own!

~Number 9~
Mio Shimazu from ‘YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World’

She looks rather plain considering my usual waifu choices but she’s got a certain charisma about her personality that’s irresistible.

Sometimes a waifu is more than just looks, you know? Okay, I don’t know what I’m talking about either but as far as ‘YU-NO’ goes there’s no shortage of attractive girls (and women) but for some reason I found myself drawn to substitute teacher Mio above all others and I’m not even sure why.

~Number 8~
Tohru Honda from ‘Fruits Basket (2019)’

*tadaima intensifies*

Speaking of “wholesome and kind-hearted”, few girls in anime embody everything that’s wonderful about the fairer sex than Tohru Honda. And while I still have issues with the show itself, its hard to fault this ‘Fruit Baskets’ protagonists embodiment of love and light.

~Number 7~
Ao Horie from ‘Ao-chan Can’t Study!’

She’s got stunning eyes, hey her eyes are up there! Where are you looking?!

She’s a complex girl who’s forever battling her own disgust for her fathers’ career (he’s an erotic novelist) while trying to reconcile her own burgeoning feelings of lust for the hot boy at school who is endlessly (but insufficiently) perusing her. Basically she’s DTF but too proud to admit it, and that makes her endlessly adorable. Also she’s got an amazing body and beautiful eyes.

~Number 6~
Bellnoa from ‘AMAZING STRANGER’

She’s a strong independent toy!

I wouldn’t mind “toying” with all the 1/6 scale girls in this show but for me it’s the fantasy-series derived tsundere Bellnoa who captures my attention. She’s stoic and proper, but cute and cheeky when she needs to be.

~Number 5~
Hikari Hazakura from ‘Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!?’

Not see-through enough… guess we’ll have to wait for the uncensored version…

Before she’d even spoken a word–just seeing her in the OP–I knew Hikari would be my best girl (woman?) from ‘Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!?’, she’s tanned, she’s genki… yep that’s pretty much my checklist checked off for the perfect anime girl. Also, ~nice oppai~!

~Number 4~
Nako Sunao from ‘Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu’

And that tiny mole below her eye too, *chefs kiss*.

As a character, none are better in ‘Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu’ than the title character of Bocchi herself. But when it comes to the serious business of picking a waifu its her first (and best?) friend Nako who wins my heart. She’s a misunderstood “tough-girl” with a heart of gold and a wry sense of humour–what’s not to love?!

~Number 3~
Senko from ‘The Helpful Fox Senko-san’

Wholesome.

The thing about Senko-san is she’s #theperfectwoman by design, which kind of feels like cheating. I mean Senko herself literally describes herself as the protagonists “wife” and “mother”–which aside from the obvious awkward Oedipus connotations–is basically what every man (apparently) looks for in a partner. Oh and she’s an 800 year-old loli fox girl, so you double perfect.

~Number 2~
Sicily von Claude from ‘Wise Man’s Grandchild’

She makes a great first impression.

The comparisons to Aqua from ‘Konosuba’ are inevitable but they should stop at the superficial because Sicily is a wholesome, pure princess without compare. She’s kindness and joy and sincerity and beauty in a single well endowed package! And if that’s not the makings o f a top tier waifu then I don’t know what is!

~Honourable Mention~
All the top waifu’s from ‘Isekai Quartet’

Look at all these adorable, silly, crazy, stupid girls (in that order).

So ‘Iskeai Quartet’ brings together 4 separate anime series’ each with at least a couple (if not a lot) of cute girls and smushes them together for comedic shenanigans. And likewise amongst the “smush” is a whole lot of top tier waifus sharing screen time together! Rem from ‘Re:Zero’, Shalltear from ‘Overlord’ and Darkness and Aqua from ‘Konosuba’, All worthy of a spot, but let’s face it, this is a short-form comedy spin-off so we’ll save individual mentions for their inevitable sequel seasons!

~Number 1~
Takemoto Uruka from ‘We Never Learn!’

She’s perfect.

Y’all know how I like those tanned, genki girls right? I’ve made no secret of the fact that those two factors add up to winning best girl potential. So let me not undersell the fact that Takemoto from ‘We Never Learn!’ is potentially the pinnacle of tanned, genki girls. She exists within the framework of her tropes but showcases such nuanced characterisation and growth throughout the show that she’s without compare. Also, those tanlines… I’m gonna need a minute to recuperate.

10 Best Waifu’s of Winter 2019 Anime

My 10 Best Waifu’s of the Winter 2019 Anime season

waifywinter19

Here we are counting down another anime season’s worth of top tier anime waifus! A reminder that this list by no means comprehensive and only concerns the shows I watched in the Winter 2019 Anime Season–also these picks are my opinions so if they don’t line up with your opinions then make your own damn list! With that out of the way here are my 10 Best Waifu’s of Winter 2019 Anime!

~Number 10~
Yotsuba Nakano from ‘The Quintessential Quintuplets’

Yay!

I was a Yotsuba ‘Stan’ from day 1. Genki dumb girls need love too you know!

~Number 9~
Nozomi Makino from ‘Magical Girl Spec Ops’

When the image captions itself.

Speaking of “genki”, as I mentioned in Day 24 of my ’30 Day Fan Service Challenge’ I’m an absolute sucker for genki tanned tomboys and Nozomi fits the bill in spades ~as well as~ having the added benefit of being a shameless pervert and (probably) lesbian. She’s the ideal woman, it’s just a shame she’s in a series that’s so dark that she can’t truly shine like she would if she were in a CGDCT or Ecchi series!

~Number 8~
Arisa Ichigaya from ‘BanG Dream! 2nd Season’

Image from her first solo single.

The trouble with picking a best girl from ‘BanG Dream!’ is that the series literally has 30+ characters in it, meaning that a) there’s a lot of waifu material in it, and b) some of the best characters don’t get nearly enough screen-time. Classic tsundere Arisa has not only had an uptake in screen time from Season 1 but also remains the most grounded among the cast which makes her reactions to some of the absurdity in this second season all the more endearing.

~Number 7~
Gripen from ‘Girly Air Force’

That’s not how you use chopsticks!

Gripen is ‘unique’ in all the best senses of the word. She’s adorable, pouty, speaks with a monotone deadpan but still has an endearing childish heart. I love this weird girl!

~Number 6~
Meiza Endust from ‘Endro!’

Just thinkin’ bout dem cards.

Mei is an otaku at heart–even though she lives in a pre-industrial fantasy world she still exhibits all the symptoms with her obsession for collecting magical cards. That’s a personality trait that makes her all the more appealing, but add to it her love for puns, honest attitude and adorable look–then there’s really no faulting her!

~Number 5~
Rui Tachibana from ‘Domestic Girlfriend’

Few shows got ‘sexy’ down pack like ‘Domestic Girlfriend’ this season…

I don’t know what it is about stoic, emotionally unavailable girls who reveal only their true selves in private but they seem to really get my blood pumping…

~Number 4~
Asahi Rokka from ‘BanG Dream! 2nd Season’

Bright eyed and ready for whatever life throws at her!

Normally I try to avoid having two girls from one show on a list like this but, well, it’s ‘BanG Dream’ my favourite show of the season, and there’s freakin’ 30+ potential waifus in that show, what do you expect from me?! Asahi, unlike almost every other character in the series was a new character for season 2 and (also) unlike a lot of other picks on this list it wasn’t love at first sight. The geeky, nervous, slightly stalker-ish super-fan of ‘Poppin’ Party’ won me over gradually and I’m not even sure why. Maybe it’s just because she’s so damn cute and yet can shred a guitar like no-one’s business!

~Number 3~
Chika Fujiwara from ‘Kaguya-sama: Love Is War’

As if I wasn’t going to include a gif of the now famous ‘Fujiwara Dance’!

The hardest part about making this list was having to exclude the titular Kagua from ‘Kagua-Sama: Love Is War’ because she’s deserving of a spot in her own right. So why did Chika get a spot in the top 10 (and so high) while Kagua was left out? Because Chika is a blessed goddess that anime has bestowed upon is and we are not worthy to be in her presence–all hail Chika!

~Number 2~
Milim Nava from ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’

I think I slimed my pants.

Before she even properly appeared in the show I was besotted with this spritely, scantily clad demon lord–even just seeing glimpses of her in the first cour’s opening credits made me stir with curiosity. But when she did finally appear, not only did she live up to all my expectations but she blew them out of the water!

Before we get to the number 1 pick, here’s an honourable mention…

~Honourable Mention~
Nishihara from ‘How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno’

100% Fetish Fuel.

She’s a sweaty sports girl who’s plenty perverted and baits the audience into believing she’s a lesbian. She’s also ludicrously sexy to the point where I was questioning whether her existence was in anime I watched or some lurid eroge or dojin. The only reason she didn’t feature on the list is because she’s only appeared for a few minutes in a single episode (as of the writing of this) meaning she’s hardly even qualifiable as a supporting character let alone a full-fledged waifu.

~Number 1~
Grea from ‘Mysteria Friends’

Best girl, Grea.

From a physical perspective, no one this season has brought ‘the sexy’ like Grea has. She is an immaculate feminine specimen the likes of which I’ve not seen since ‘Monster Musume’ and based solely on her appearance alone I could have given her a spot on the list for sure. But why Grea “wins” the top spot is largely down to her personality. She is shy and insecure but friendly and patient, she is quiet and reserved but affectionate and endearing. And, sadly, she is not my waifu but clearly belonging to her love interest Anne in this series. But even just being observer to their courtship is enough for me. Grea is perfect and that’s why she’s Number 1.

The Best Anime Waifu’s of 2018

A rundown of my favourite waifu’s of the 2018 anime season!

So another year has come and gone and with it a heck of a lot of anime with an amazing amount of anime girls who are ‘waifu’ material. But rather than an arbitrary Top 10 List (not that there’s anything wrong with them–I love a good list!) This time we’re going to take a look at some of the best anime girls to grace our screen in 2018 in a sort of awards show format, much like I did for My Best OP and Best ED list (check those out if you haven’t already). So with the introduction out of the way let’s take a look at some of the Best Anime Waifu’s of 2018!

Please note, this post contains some NSFW imagery.

Sexiest Waifu 2018

Always start a list off with something sexy, that’s what my anime list making teacher always taught me! You know what’s sexy to me in an anime waifu? Confidence, assertiveness, loyalty, being calm, cool and collected under pressure also a nice rack and behind doesn’t hurt! So with that said my sexiest waifu was always going to be Xenovia Quarta from ‘High School DxD Hero’, while always a supporting character the fourth season of DxD, with its change of animation studio and art style brought with it for me, a new appreciation for this blue-haired beauty!

“Kawaii desu~!” Cutest Waifu 2018

It’s pretty unanimously agreed upon (at least for people who’ve watched the show) that Kana from ‘Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid’ (2017) is adorable as all heck. But what do you do when you need a cute fix in the year 2018? Why have a character that almost looks exactly the same and is voiced by the same voice actress of course! I don’t mean that as a slight against Kamuri Sengoku from ‘Slow Start’ because she is legitimately the cutest waifu of the year, but the comparisons are unavoidable. Kamuri at least has the benefit of being a loli high-schooler on her side so I feel a bit less guilty about giving her the ‘waifu’ title… among other things… ahem!

Funniest Waifu 2018

Let’s not beat around the bush here, there are probably a dozen funnier female characters who graced our screens in 2018 then my pick here. But the important differentiating factor between those and this one, is that we’re talking ‘waifus’ here! So the girls from ‘Asobi Asobase’ or ‘Mitsuboshi Colors’ don’t really qualify as I’d never call them “waifu material” mostly because I don’t find any of them attractive! Ahegao Double Peace Sensei from ‘My Sister, My Writer’ on the other hand not only delivers the best lines from the aforementioned show but remains sexy (and problematic) the whole way through! What a woman!

Best Girl From A ‘Bad’ Show

Even the worst anime can have waifu potential among the cast. This particular show wasn’t bad exactly it was just heavily flawed, poorly handled and had one of the ~worst~ leads in a harem anime I’ve ever seen. But that’s enough about the bad, let’s talk about the GOOD. Ginko Sora from ‘The Ryuo’s Work Is Never Done!’ is a once in a lifetime waifu, she is top tier and she deserves better than the treatment she got in this damned show. Quick, move on to the next category before I start ranting again!

“Double The Fun!” Best Twins

Say what you will about the neanderthal male mind’s preoccupation with the fetishisation of twins, at least it’s not illegal! Wait, what were we talking about? Oh right! Claire and Emily Thomas from ‘Harukana Receive’ are two busty blonde bombshells who tear up the beach volleyball courts and set fire to my heart (among other places…) Emily is my personal favourite, just because I prefer the shy, glasses wearing type over the grabby confident type but I’m not kicking either out of bed if you know what I’m sayin’!

Waifu I’d Most Like As My Little Sister

Well this got weird, didn’t it?! I mean more weird than it already was. I’m not even sure what I meant with this category? Is this a girl I’d like to literally be related to? Or is this a girl I’d like to have living in my house and us have a tenuous but nonetheless situational induced intimate relationship with? Ultimately I just picked Rinne O’Hara from ‘ISLAND’ because she’s a freakin’ adorable legal loli who I’d just love to be around on a daily basis. Is that too much to ask?! Someone pass the sunblock…

Best Tsundere, Not That I Even Like Them Anyway! Baka!

When I started blogging in February of 2018, one thing was clear in mind. “Tsundere’s are the worst kind of -dere!” Now, as I write this in January 2019 my opinion is more like, “oh my god there’s as many different tsundere’s as there’s types of snowflakes!” Yes, I officially love tsundere’s but only one’s with depth and complexity and what’s that oh I’m about to be punched again! Oof~! Sagiri Ameno from ‘Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs’ is the best tsun I’ve seen in a long long while. She’s strong and forthright and opinionated, but also sensitive and neurotic and painfully shy. She’s also sexy as heck, which is a wonderful bonus!

“I Like ‘Em Crazy” Best Yandere 2018

What makes a great Yandere? Well the simmering potential that any given moment they could straight up murder you while simultaneously remaining so adorably attractive that you’d be thanking them ’til the last breath escaped your body? Hello, Satou Matsuzaka from ‘Happy Sugar Life’ I know you’re going to kill me eventually but at least make it worth my while if you know what I mean…

Be-be-best S-shy Waifu! *runs away*

Just being 100% shy is never going to be enough to catch my attention. That’s why Kotetsu Tatejima from ‘Anima Yell!’ wins this particular category. Yes she’s skittish and nervous, but she’s also uncharacteristically abrasive and prone to speaking her mind even in the face of reason. She’s also probably the best dang fang girl that’s ever existed but out of virtue of not expecting a girl this shy to sporting the genki fang!

WILF

It’s an acronym and the ‘W’ stands for ‘Waifu’ if you need to know the rest, there’s a Google you can learn from! Pretty much any of the girls on this list are worthy of as much but sometimes you’ve just got to pick one. Hotaru Shidare from ‘Dagashi Kashi 2’ has always been a consistently sexual presence in my anime life since the first time I watched Dagashi Kashi… I mean there’s something inherently alluring about a girl who can fit that much candy in her mouth at one time… #justsayin’

“My Waifu Has A Secret” – Best Trap Character 2018

Is it okay to use the word “trap” in 2018?! I don’t know but there’s something undeniably problematic about it, even if I don’t fully understand. That said any boy who pulls off looking like a girl this much is very befitting of this probably problematic title. This year it was Batard from ‘Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight’ a trap in every sense of the word…

*Odeipus Complex Intensifies* Best Motherly Waifu

So, uh… some people have a thing for their own mother, and well not to kink shame, but, ehh… anyone else not really understand that?! I mean I get wanting to be looked after and coddled and fed and doted on but why’s it gotta be on someone that reminds you of your own mother?! To be fair if my mother looked liked Ayaka Sunohara from ‘Miss Caretaker Of Sunohara-Sou’ I might be so bold to consider it…

Get Thee Onto A Body Pillow!

I currently am in possession of three body-pillows (dakimakura) and while they offer substantial bedtime support I am ~always~ on the lookout for new ones. And who among our waifus is more supporting and deserving of the privilege than Shion from ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’. She’s the perfect woman, no matter the dimensions you end up seeing her in!

Most Heroic Waifu of 2018

Heroism is about a lot of things, its not just a measure of physical strength but also emotional strength in the face of adversity and risking it all to protect the people your love. And for me, no one was stronger, went through hell, and still kept fighting quite like Zero Two from ‘Darling In The FranXX’, also she’s sexy as heck and who doesn’t want a hero like that?!

Brains & Beauty Award

Too often intelligence is a trait overlooked when determining a waifu, after all that was something I looked for in a life partner why shouldn’t I do the same for my anime waifu’s? Maho Hijayo from Steins;Gate 0 is a ~literal~ genius, an endearing personality and a legal loli! What more could you ask for?! Oh dear, I’m starting to sound like Daru…

The First Annual Mai Sakurajima Award For Overall Excellence In Being An Anime Waifu

Sometimes you make a list and realise someone important’s missing, even though they more than fulfil the various requirements on the waifu side of things, and could easily be eligible for any of the previous categories. Sometimes they’re just too good to be put under one box but not fall just short of being the favourite. That’s what this inaugural award is about for a waifu who exemplifies excellence in everything they do but for whatever reason come second best to the year’s best. Mai Sakurajima from ‘Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai’ is pretty much the perfect anime waifu, but for me, there’s one girl who is better.

~Honourable Mentions~

This year had too many great waifu’s, so here’s 3 more that I felt were deserving of a mention!

Eiko Tokura from ‘Slow Start’
Rin Shima from ‘Laid Back Camp’
Koyume Koizuka – ‘Comic Girls’

The Best Anime Waifu Of 2018

The thing about picking a best girl is there’s not a lot of logic involved, its a personal thing it can’t be quantified by any kind of scientific reasoning. Shera Greenwood from ‘How NOT To Summon A Demon Lord’ is perfect, she’s a kind-hearted elf girl with an energetic spirit and a desire to live her own life as an adventurer and not be beholden to her royal lineage. And as far as looks go her curvaceous body and irresistible smile push all the right buttons. That’s why Shera is My Best Anime Waifu of 2018!

And that’s my list of 2018’s Best Anime Waifu’s, let me know what you think in the comments below and who was your pick for 2018’s best? Thank you all for reading!

Happy Sugar Life – Full Season QandA Rundown

Happy Sugar Life – Full Season QandA Rundown

What’s the important information? Happy Sugar Life is a Summer 2018 psychological horror anime that ran 12 episodes from July to September. It is based on a manga series written by Tomiyaki Kagisora.

What’s it about? On the outside Sato is a bright, beautiful and very popular girl but inside she is deeply troubled and scarred—the only thing in life that brings her joy is her ‘relationship’ with a little girl named Shio who she’s kidnapped and keeps in her apartment. The two live a blissful life together that Sato would do anything to maintain, even if it means committing murder.

Happy together.

Why did you watch it? Believe it or not I actually like ‘dark’ things, despite my preoccupation with CGDCT and slice of life shows seemingly dictating my choices in anime watching. So when there’s a series that combines both—at the least the latter of which aesthetically if not literally—then you better believe I’m going to watch it!

Did you enjoy the show? As of the writing of this rundown ‘Happy Sugar Life’ is my second favourite anime of all time. Does that answer that question? I adored pretty much everything about this series to the point where I struggle to find fault with anything.

Just like me and this anime.

What was your favourite episode? Episode 9 “Dissolving Rain” had the single most dramatic moment I’ve seen in an anime in a very long time—the fact the build up to it was so masterfully and artfully done is just a small factor in why it was such a sublime episode. Plus the way it turns from honestly loving and beautiful to knuckle clenching tension to absolute horror within the space of minutes is something to behold.

Some breathtaking imagery in nearly every episode.

What were your most favourite things about the show? While this probably won’t be the same for most people, the fact that I could sympathise and even gravitate and dare I say sit in awed wonder of a character is morally ambiguous and downright sadistic as Sato says a lot about the quality of her characterisation and the writing. Not since the ‘Hannibal’ TV series have I been so enraptured and captivated and even siding with the actions of “the bad guy”. Artistically too, this shows pastel aesthetics are absolutely gorgeous and work as a visual contrast to the dark themes throughout.

In both senses of the word.

What were your least favourite things about the show? For a show to have made its way to Number 2 on my favourites list you’ll be hard-pressed to find me saying anything negative about it. Truly the only thing this show is weaker for is the fact that it’s only 12 episodes. I could have easily spent twice as long with these characters.

Who was your favourite character? Sato commands presence whenever she’s on-screen and even when she’s not on-screen the reverberations of her very existence permeate every characters respective lives, she is the burning sun at the centre of this universe, the tyrant at which all obey, all fear and many seek to bring down.

What’s that quote about staring into the abyss?

Thoughts on the OP (opening) and ED (ending) and the soundtrack in general? As if it’s any surprise but both the OP, “One Room Sugar Life” by Nanawo Akari and the ED “Sweet Hurt” by Reona are both absolutely gorgeous. The OP is a tense but still exciting and catchy prelude to each episode and sets the mood perfectly, while the ED serves as a sweet and reflective palette cleanser from the darkness that came before.

What’s something unique about this show? Rather than mention something specific about the series as I find everything about this show uniquely brilliant. A fact that still staggers me is the fact that something as beautiful and artistic as this was made by a first-time anime studio. There’s not much information about it that I could find but kudos to ‘Ezo’la’ for coming out this strong and confident with a series like this. I await any of their future series with interest and anticipation!

I love the recurrent motif of eyes in this series.

What other anime are most like it for the sake of comparison? The contrast of cute to dark content is of course reminiscent of such classic series’ as ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’ and more recently ‘Magical Girl Raising Project’ but as I discussed in my episodic reviews the US series ‘Hannibal’ feels like the most accurate and appropriate comparison as the darkness in this show comes from nothing more than human desires and there’s nothing ~magical~ about what transpires between these characters.

Who would you recommend it to? I think there’s a certain level of arrogance that comes in recommending a series you love so much to everyone just because it is your favourite. But in that arrogance is an enthusiasm and hope that ~someone~ out there will find as much joy in it that you found in it. I don’t doubt there will be—even among my readers—people who can’t stand this show, but if I can even convince one person to like this show and they find even an ~ounce~ of enjoyment out of this show than that makes me happy.

Sum up the season in one sentence: ‘With the ‘Happy’ comes tragedy, with the ‘Sugar’ comes the sour and with ‘Life’ come death.’

Final score? 97 out of 100.

Sweet dreams.

Music Girls – Full Season QandA Rundown

Music Girls – Full Season QandA Rundown

What’s the important information? Music Girls is a Summer 2018 anime that ran 12 episodes through June to September. It is an original anime based on a 2015 anime short film produced by Studio Deen for the ‘Young Animator Training Project’.

What’s it about? Hanako has just returned to Japan after living in the United States with her musician parents, while at the airport she comes across the “Music Girls” an obscure eleven-member idol group with precisely 26 die-hard fans. Their manager Ikehashi, immediately finds Hanako’s look and personality to be ideal for their group, that is until she starts singing and find out she’s awful at it. Committed to helping the ‘Music Girls’ become the best they can be she joins them as their ‘secretary’ and helps out behind the scenes instead.

Why did you watch it? Initially this show wasn’t even on my Summer 2018 watch list, but after I dropped a couple of shows I decided to give a chance on the show, ordinarily I don’t bother with idol anime but something about this show seemed different. And ~boy~ was I right with that assumption!

Did you enjoy the show? No other show this season offered this level of unpredictable and undefinable joy, it’s not a ~great~ show, at times it hardly even a show, but is stupidly fun and endearingly so. At times it feels like a parody, while other times it feels like a student film—sometimes its heavy on the idol-shtick, whereas other times it leans into loose comedy while other times it comes across as sincere slice of life but never does it commit to one wholly. In any other this kind of lack-of-focus would be a negative but somehow here it just works—or maybe that’s just me…

What was your favourite episode? It’s hard to pick just one as the duality of this show means sincere episodes can be just as interesting as ~silly~ episodes. But the one that struck the balance perfectly and actually had some interesting and deep things to say while remaining simultaneously ridiculous is Episode 6 “Meat and Idols” which gave us the very progressive message that people should identify with message intended for anybody regardless of age, gender or social status while also tying it into an entire plot point about who keeps buying all the fried chicken at one of the idol’s favourite street-side eateries.

What were your most favourite things about the show? Aside from everything I’ve mentioned above, I did love the gratuitous bath scenes, which got so frequent that I realised this show spent more time in baths than ‘Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs’ an anime actually set in a bathhouse!

What were your least favourite things about the show? I never like to complain about animation quality, considering the short turn around time many anime have between animating and release and while a lot of the ‘shortcomings’ in this series are probably more to do with Studio Deen being a studio that’s ~loose~ with animation in general. But there were times during this season where I wondered if a work experience kid was put on a scene as occasionally animation felt below-amateurish. If it was intended then fantastic, but if not… well that’s a negative in my book. Also the songs that the Music Girls perform aren’t actually that good, which, you know is kind of a big deal for a series with ‘Music’ in the title!

Who was your favourite character? Sasame is amazing—she exists almost outside of the rest of the cast by being a character who would probably never actually be an idol in real life but is absolutely an essential character if we’re looking at this as a comedy/CGDCT show.

Thoughts on the OP (opening) and ED (ending) and the soundtrack in general? The OP, “Eien Shonen” by Yui Ogura is fantastic—not only is it an awesome and catchy song but it fits ~perfectly~ with the visuals, evoking a sort of 90’s sitcom aesthetic, what with the names of every character appearing on screen as they do. The ED is “Shining Peace” by the cast and it’s a competent if kind of generic piece by the cast—funnily enough though it’s better than any of the Insert songs in the show itself!

What’s something unique about this show? This whole show is unique, it feels like a rare and endangered species that needs to be protected—but at the same time—exploited and put on show for all to see just how ~weird~ this show is!

What other anime are most like it for the sake of comparison? Funnily enough this series’ silliness to sincerity ratio reminds me of another show with ‘Girls’ in the title. Comic Girls shares at least a passing similarity with this show, even if the aforementioned is much more polished and competent.

Who would you recommend it to? Anyone who doesn’t take anime too seriously and can enjoy something light-hearted and silly! There is a ~genuine~ attempt at making an anime underneath all the amateurish decisions, both creatively and technically but it’s hard not to get swept up by the nonsense, as often is the case!

Sum up the season in one sentence: ‘To an outsider an idol may seem silly and facile, even stupid, but dig beneath and you might find something more meaningful—even human.’

Final score? 77 out of 100.

In Memoriam – ‘Happy Sugar Life’ Episode 12 (Finale) Review

In Memoriam – An Anime QandA Review of ‘Happy Sugar Life’ Episode 12

What’s the show? Happy Sugar Life, Episode 12.

So the series finale of this twisted little show, how is it? *deep breath* I’m going to do by very best to give an even handed and bias free review of this season finale in order to articulate the pros and con—THIS WAS THE BEST THING IVE EVER SEEN!

Well that lasted all of seven seconds… so are we going to go into full spoiler territory or are you going to be ~kinda~ vague like you were with your Steins;Gate 0 Finale review? I’m going to spoil some major events of course it’s impossible not to when talking about a series finale of a show like this but this isn’t going to go through absolutely everything that happens in the episode. So bare that in mind.

Fair enough, so what’s got you so excited about this ending? Well it’s an ending for one, which is terrific—there’s nothing worse than a non-ending for a show you’ve invested so much time in. But what’s more impressive is that how’s its stuck with me, it’s been 12 hours since I watched the episode and I’ve watched other things in-between then and now but still my mind is occupied with what happened and unlike some finales which can deliver an initial impact that upon time and reflection open it up to more and more critical thinking and in turn bring up issues of continuity or plotting. The more I think of it the more perfect of an ending I think this show gave us.

Hands and eyes are recurring imagery throughout the series, I could do a whole post about those! (I won’t though).

Okay, enough with the praise get into the details! So Satō and Shio intend to leave the country to start their new life while Satō’s aunt will help assist Satō’s disappearance by burning her apartment down and using the body of the previously murdered Shoko as a way to fake Satō’s death. But due to Satō forgetting her ring they hurry back to retrieve it—which ends up being their undoing. Shio’s brother Asahi turns up with the intent of bringing back her little sister and he confronts them at the bottom of the buildings elevator. After several failed attempts to escape the burning building from various other floors Asahi finally gets to talk heart-to-heart with his little sister. But Shio doesn’t want to go back to her family, she has a new family in Satō—at first he doesn’t understand but Shio explains that she felt so betrayed by her mother abandoning her that she can never go back to that unhappy life.

You make a decent point but still…

Okay so then what happens?! Satō and Shio retreat to the rooftop where they embrace one last time and resign themselves to the fact that their lives must end but they’ll end together as there is no more happiness to be had in going on—that this is the end of their ~happy sugar life~. They leap to their deaths, visions of a life they could have had flashing through Satō’s mind and it’s then she realizes what love truly is. Cut to a few days later and we find out that Satō took the brunt of the 14-storey fall and died but in doing so allowed Shio to live. Visiting her in hospital Asahi asks her kid sister if they can finally be a family again—but something has changed in the little girl. She tells her brother that she can’t because she and Satō will always be together, that she’s a part of her now. And the look she gives is positively chilling—Satō may be dead but the legacy lives on.

Those eyes… Sato’s eyes…

Right… that’s certainly dramatic. It’s more than just dramatic—it’s transformative television! If you’ll allow me to put on my pretentious cap for a minute and reference something old and somewhat niche, it somewhat reminds me of the second season finale of US series ‘Twin Peaks’ (P.S. spoilers for a show that aired in 1991) our incorruptible hero and moral centre of the show Special Agent Dale Cooper escapes the madness of The Black Lodge only for him to look into a mirror and see the reflection of Bob—the series’ embodiment of evil—looking back at him. Now obviously I’m not comparing Satō to the embodiment of pure evil, she was a deeply troubled girl and a victim of emotional abuse from her twisted aunt, but the concept of “ideas” and “behaviours” being passed from one person to another is an inherently interesting one.

At least Satou’s aunt is arrested for the arson. Though I have a feeling she’ll be pretty popular in jail…

Okay, thanks for the reference, grandpa. But wait, the fact this series ends with that, doesn’t that mean that the most interesting thing this show does doesn’t even get to be explored? Well maybe we’ll get a new season in 25 years time (that’s a Twin Peaks reference btw!) but I never said it was the /most interesting thing about the show, and besides it’s ~more~ important that the show left an indelible mark with its finale than feeling unfilled by a newly emergent plot line. This one season tells all of Satō’s story and does so perfect, to ask for any more or to call the way this series ends unfulfilling or even cliff hanger bait is missing the point entirely!

Fire walk with me. (Yep that’s another Twin Peaks reference, can you tell I really like Twin Peaks?)

I don’t know that anybody is calling it that but I get your point. So I know you don’t talk about overall opinions of a show in episodic reviews—you save that for the QandA Rundowns, but suffice to say this show you endlessly raved about week-to-week ended with your expectations sated? Absolutely, every week delivered an intrinsic piece of a puzzle that was Satō’s complicated life, who she was, what she was doing, where she was going and who would be left in her wake. And this finale capped everything off perfectly; it offered a tragic and untimely but ultimately ‘happy’ ending for a person who never really belonged anywhere. A quote from Taiyo (one of the supporting characters) to Satō echoes in my head as I sit here typing on my computer, “you could chose to have a normal happy life, why are you so set on Shio?” And the answer, as it turns out is both the most simple and most difficult thing in the world: love. This was a love story: a beautiful, horrible, adorable, twisted love story.

A memory that never was.

Dropkick On My Devil! – Full Season QandA Rundown

Dropkick On My Devil! – Full Season QandA Rundown

What’s the important information? Dropkick On My Devil! Is a Summer 2018 Comedy anime that aired 11 episodes from July through September. It is based on a long-running Manga series by author Yukiwo.

What’s it about? A gothic-lolita witch named Yurine summons Jashin-chan a snake woman devil from hell. Due to ~reasons~ she can’t send her back though so Jashin-chan is forced to endure everyday life on Earth until Yurine is killed—which Jashin-chan attempts to do, but always fails miserably. They are joined by various acquaintances from Heaven and Hell in there everyday adventures!

Moments with all these characters together are very rare after the first two episodes.

Why did you watch it? I honestly don’t know, I was wary to pick the show up from the beginning as its premise sold it as a ‘violent slapstick comedy’ and while I love comedy anime I’m mostly indifferent to slapstick. I suppose I was just hoping for cute monster girls.

Did you enjoy the show? That’s a question I asked myself many a times during the first few episodes, a question that morphed into ‘why am I enjoying this show?’ then finally ‘is enjoyment all there is?’ For what it’s worth this series is unexpectedly deep—it just takes a long while to get there, I’ll touch upon why exactly in a later question but to answer this question, yes I did enjoy this show a lot more than I expected to!

What a troll.

What was your favourite episode? It’s hard because while this show certainly had its fair share of entertaining, interesting and occasionally thought provoking plot-lines it also too often indulged in dumb, aggressive and mean-spirited behaviour that skirted the line between what’s enjoyable and what’s just unpleasant. I think the final episode—episode 11—was the least mean-spirited overall and struck the balance as well as it could possibly.

What were your most favourite things about the show? I enjoyed the characters for the most part; likewise I really enjoyed the meta-humour, like when Jashin-chan referenced how surprised she was that the ‘Dropkick On My Devil!’ manga got an anime adaptation. That and the references to other media, anime and otherwise were always fun!

Episode 10 has a lot of references to other shows~

Wbat were your least favourite things about the show? There’s a lot of cruelty towards Pekola, an angel character who lost her halo and can’t return to heaven and so much of it feels completely without a point. If it’s to get us to side against Jashin-chan, then it works but the show simultaneously ties to humanise Jashin-chan too so it makes these moments of aggression towards the downtrodden Pekola feel all the more pointless.

This was probably Jashin-chan at her cruelest, eating a meal in front of homeless Pekola, then proceeding to eat the bread crusts that Pekola had saved for her own dinner. All on Christmas no less!

Who was your favourite character? Minos is a sexy cow-girl (that’s a half girl, half cow FYI) that despite being the least featured of the main cast I still found myself inexorably drawn to. She is without a doubt a character most deserving of a spin-off of any anime character this season—even if it’s just a 5-minute anime of her daily life!

A hard working cow-girl deserves a drink after work!

What’s something unique about this show? Despite being a “violent slapstick comedy” this show certainly relished in delving into deeper and more mature subject matter than expected. What other anime out there would deliver such cold and brutal facts such as that Japan is 144th in the world for gender equality? I can’t say I ever expected to learn such a sobering factoid from this kind of anime but here we are!

What other anime are most like it for the sake of comparison? In my episodic reviews of the show I found myself comparing it to Gabriel DropOut a lot which still stands true as a comparison, but this show is far more committed to its overall aesthetic and delivering a complex world-view than the aforementioned ever was. Not to mention its more dim view of humanity as a whole.

She’s got the evil eye and it’s set on Jashin-chan.

Who would you recommend it to? It’s hard to pinpoint a target audience or demographic because this show is in of itself a hard show to categorise. Comedy fans certainly, but those perhaps expecting a bit more from their comedy than just the jokes and nothing else—that’s as much a recommendation as it is a warning. Also for those who aren’t squeamish because this show can get pretty violent and sadistic—especially early on.

I did say it was sadistic, didn’t I?

Sum up the season in one sentence: ‘Even though its dumb and violent its smarter than it looks, it’s also occasionally cute and sweet—it’s basically a tsundere incarnate as an anime!’

Final score? 78 out of 100.

She almost always deserves it.
