My Hero Academia 3rd Season Episode 4 – Anime QandA Review

What’s the show? My Hero Academia 3rd Season, Episode 4.

The villains were commencing their attack last episode. What happens?! Someone sounds strangely interested in this show…

I… err, well it’s not often you a review a show with actual conflicts and action and what not! Uh-huh, well yes, the villains do attack and it’s actually kind of devastating, at least for a couple of characters!

Oh, high stakes then? In a way, yes. I can’t be entirely sure because the show is a bit vague about it, but I think one of the heroes actually died. I really hope Ragdoll isn’t actually dead, she’s so cute!

Oh boy. That serious, huh? That’s not even the half of it, Deku battles against a muscle-bound foe who’s threatening little boy Kota, and this mother-fucker, this inside-out swoll villain piece of shit is actually the douche that killed Kota’s hero parents back in the day.

That seems… implausible. I, yeah… I agree, that was the only thing about the episode that kind of screamed ‘contrived’ to me but hey, I get why they did it, it forces Kota to realise what a villain really is and how different they are from heroes. And kudos to this show, they didn’t shy away from showing what makes a villain a villain!

I actually cared a bit for Kota in this episode, such is the power of My Hero Academia!

How so? Well, when ‘quizzed’ on why Muscular (yeah that’s apparently his villain name) does what he does, he simply replies with “I just wanted to kill”. It’s absolutely chilling. But totally reinforces why heroes are so important and so idolized in this society, they face absolute evil to save innocent lives and do so knowing they could possibly lose their lives in the process and yet they do so all the same.

So the all important fight between Muscular and Deku, how is it?! It’s phenomenal, true not as intricate or flashy as some of the battles seen in Season 2 but it’s brutal and raw and intimate and kind of terrifying. Hearing Deku say “Mom, I’m sorry” as he’s on the edge of being defeated by an opponent of unrelenting strength and brutality brought so many tears to my eye. And even though I knew he’d somehow get out of the situation because he is the main protagonist I was still on the edge of my seat to see how he would get out of it!

And he does get out of it, right? Well, yeah. As if there was any doubt (there was!) His first punch is at 10% of his total strength, it does nothing. His second punch is at 100% of his total strength, it does very little. His third and final punch, he puts in 1 million % of his strength and finally there is some reprieve from his brutal beatdown!

A million percent? That’s not a thing, like that’s just… dumb. Shh~ It’s fine, it’s fine.

Err, I… okay, whatever, sure let’s roll with it. Final verdict? I wish all the episodes were out already because I really love this show. It simultaneously meets, betrays and exceeds expectations, it’s stupid and it’s smart, it’s manipulative and it’s honest, it’s… it’s My Hero.

My Hero Academia 3rd Season Episode 1 & 2 – Anime QandA Review

What’s the show? My Hero Academia 3rd Season, Episode 1 & 2.

Wait, you’ve only reviewed the first season? What happened to the second season review? Okay! I get it! I’m really bad at remembering to review second season’s before third season’s are released, I’ll get around to it one of these days!

Sure, you mean when you run out of content. Where have you been?! There’s been plenty of content!

Tell me about it, I haven’t had a day off in 3 months! You don’t need time off, you don’t exist!

So what happens in these first two episodes of season 3? Well, the first episode is just a recap of some events of the previous seasons to help bring people up to speed with what happened, not sure how necessary it was… I mean everyone watching should have watched the previous two seasons and season 2 only ended like 5 months ago so there’s no real excuse in having forgotten what happened!

So it’s a pretty pointless episode then? Well I guess that depends who you ask, it does take place at the school pool so plenty of bare chested and muscular boys to look at, if that’s your kind of thing.

I’m guessing you didn’t enjoy it much all then? It was fine, I would have preferred a proper episode but it still had some funny character moments and good lines!

“Meowth, that’s right!” (I feel like I’ve made that joke before)

Episode 2 then, any better? Much better! The training camp began, and it started with a bang—literally—as class 1A is tasked with finding their own way to the camp. A task which is made all the more difficult as a professional hero team called ‘The Pussycats’—who run the camp—litter their way with powerful monsters made of dirt! There’s some really cool teaming up and fighting of these monsters, who while never posing much of a threat tire the heroes in training out before they even reach the camp.

And what happens for the rest of the episode? Hot springs mostly!

Really?! Okay that’s not true but it does seem like the fan-service has been already dialled up this season, though it is fairly equal representation at this point for what its worth.

I’ll need a minute…

Uh-huh… We’re also introduced to an annoying little kid who is the cousin of one (or both?) of The Pussycat’s, and he hates heroes. Which we learn is because his parents were heroes and they died when he was young and blah blah blah… I don’t really care.

What a dick. Pun intended.

Wow, cruel much? I’m sorry, but I really don’t see the point of this kid being here, like sure he’s probably going to give Deku some valuable lesson about the responsibilities of being a hero or what not, but it’s already rubbed me the wrong way. Just give me top banter between the kids of class 1A and Eraserhead being a dick to his students and burgeoning feelings between Deku and Ochako and more action and more villains, because that’s what I signed up, for that’s what I want!

Okay then, fair enough. So do you recommend the show? For newcomers it goes without saying, but start at the beginning, it’s not that many episodes to catch-up and it’s a super fun ride that only gets better with the second season. If you’ve watched the show and not liked it, this isn’t going to change your mind, but if you love it you’re probably already watching. And while I’m not to keen on the current plot line with the hero hating kid Kouta, I’m still going to watch the hell out of every new episode because this show is just so much fun and the characters are fantastic!

My Hero Academia – 20 Question Anime Review (Mild Spoilers)

What’s the show? My Hero Academia (2016).

And what’s it about? In a world where superheroes are almost commonplace, out protagonist Izuku Midoriya dreams of one day becoming a hero like his role model ‘All Might’ the greatest of all superheroes, except he was born without a ‘quirk’ the very thing that makes ordinary people attain powers.

Well that’s sad… Don’t worry, he meets All Might in person and because Midoriya is such a sweet soft boy with a heart of gold and the bravery of a Hinox, All Might takes him on as an apprentice with the intent to bequeath his powers to him when he becomes strong enough.

Wow, spoilers much? It’s fine. It reveals as much in the Wikipedia synopsis, it’s like three episodes of set up I saved you.

“Saved me”? Don’t tell me this is a negative review. No not at all, My Hero Academia is one of the rare shonen anime that doesn’t feel like it’s wasting your time.

Ouch, take that other shonen anime. P.S. what’s a shonen anime? Right, I sometimes forget you’re a filthy normie.

Please stop calling me that. No. Also shonen is anime or manga targeted at teenage boys, and generally speaking of the action genre and usually with lots of episodes/volumes.

So it’s a good show? Yeah, it just takes a little bit of time getting to the meat of what the show’s going to become. It’s the kind of show where the first season feels lacking with hindsight and an excellent second season in the equation.

Well without spoiling too much, what is the “meat”? It’s a school anime!

Right. And the other student heroes are so much more interesting than the protagonist (sorry Midoriya!)

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume the one’s you think are more interesting than the protagonist are female? Sir! You wound me! Darest thou think I so shallow-

Who’s your best girl? Froppy! Rainy season hero has stolen my heart with her ridiculously long tongue and laid back persona!

Figured as much… No! You tricked me! There are plenty of interesting male characters too! Katsuki Bakugo treads this fine line between hero and villain with his explosive personality, so that’s interesting to watch and Tenya Ida is like if Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t a douchebag and had appropriate sized calf muscles for the amount of running he does. And then Mr Hot and Cold himself Shoto Todoroki, you know every time he’s on screen I think it moves a little.

Was that a ‘Seinfeld’ reference? Of course not, I don’t even know what that is, I only know anime. Besides I’m not gay, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Uh-huh, you know, I think I actually believe that you’re not just in it for the ‘sweet waifus’ this time. I’m proud of you. But there are sweet waifus and I will appreciate them thusly. Ochako makes me feel weightless as I look upon her beautiful face. Momo can create a lot more than just inanimate objects seeing her in that superhero costume of hers if you know what I mean! Oh and Toru Hagakure, I almost forgot she was there! *winky face* And then there are a bunch others, but seriously all I need is Froppy to hop on over to me and I’m all set!

Right. So enough with the characters otherwise we’ll be here all day. How is the show? It’s honestly great, with moments of brilliance but the first season feels constricted by a sense of reigning things in for the sake of future encounters. It’s like in a video game when the main villain appears in a cut scene for a minute just to remind you they are there, just teasing bigger and better things to come.

So it’s a season of set-up? Not so bluntly as that, there’s still big action and character development and great heroic moments for most of the characters, but because it’s a part of something that you know instinctively is going to run a long time the stakes are never as high as they probably should be.

Recommended though? If you haven’t watched My Hero Academia yet you should probably go back in time and watch it before you read this review, because the first season is better when you don’t know that it gets better later. But if you don’t possess that superhero power than I guess you’ll just have to do your best to forget about all this… I think I know a sensei who can help you out with that…

Well for the rest of us, score please? A veritable gluttony of fun and interesting heroes on the roster is the solid foundation to a truly great show with ample action, pathos and personality. My great anime sense is tingling, 89 out of 100.
