Good Things Take Slime – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ First Season Review

Good Things Take Slime – A First Season Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’

slimefirst

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime.

And what’s it about? You know what it’s about, everyone does at this point–this isn’t like one of my niche cute girl or ecchi shows that no one’s bothered to investigate.

Wow. Why the attitude? No attitude, just cutting to the point of this review. Also, if I’m honest, I kinda didn’t want to write this review.

Reincarnation seems like a fun idea…

Oh? And why’s that? Because I’ve kind of got nothing to add to the overall discussion around this anime. Sure I’ve seen my share of complaints about this series (mainly on WordPress) but at this point it feels like the people who don’t like this show are steadfast in their disapproval and there’s no amount of discussion on my part that could sway them to think otherwise. Nor would I want to, that’s really not my job after all.

Hehe, the little ears and tail!

For the sake of sating my curiosity, what are the complaints? You want me to do a Top 5 Complaints and Rebuttals About ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ type thing then, because I’ll do it?!

Sure, means I can have a break while you talk to yourself… I mean more than usual… Right! Here we go!

    1. “Rimuru is too overpowered!” That’s practically every shonen anime ever–at least the one’s I’ve watched. Overpowered is the point of these types of wish-fulfilment fantasy series’, to be able to envision yourself in the place of the protagonist crushing your enemies like you wish you could do to your enemies in real life.
    2. “He’s so overpowered that there’s no threat to any of his encounters with his enemies, he can just pull out some ‘deus ex machina’ and win instantly!” Even if that was true (which I think is a bit of a stretch, he has to rely on a couple of more powerful or more knowledgeable individuals throughout the series) what’s so wrong with having a protagonist with god-like powers? It makes for an interesting inversion on the tried and true Shonen formula of ‘fight a guy, get defeated, train, learn new skills, fight a guy, win’. Not to mention its good for comedic effect–which this show leans on quite a bit.
    3. “The show’s pacing is far too quick. Entire storylines are brought up and resolved within the space of an episode!” I hate this complaint so much, yes it’s pace is fast. There are many one-episode arcs that could (and would) have been stretched out to 3+ episodes if this was an adaptation of a long-running filler filled shonen manga. But this is originally based on a web novel that’s 248 chapters long and that presumably has a definite beginning, middle and end to the whole saga. Added to the fact that the first season only adapts 64ish chapters means there’s a larger story to tell then the brief arcs which are mere connective stitches in the overall “bigger picture”.
    4. “Why do the more animal or monster looking characters turn more human and “sexy” when they receive a name and rank up?” Not to be racist, but human looking characters are typically sexier than monster-looking characters. That’s literally the reason, don’t think too hard about it.
    5. “I just find the whole series underwhelming and kind of boring.” That’s fine, that’s your opinion and if you think so then there’s no need for you to watch the upcoming second season. I personally am very invested in the characters and have the confidence that the author (and those responsible for the adaptation) will deliver a compelling story to come!

Hmm, oh, you’re done? Sorry I was just taking a nap. Hey! You asked me to do this!

The ogre’s are still my favourite group of side characters.

Oh yes, right and what a splendid job you did. Should we continue with a proper review now? Yeah, yeah…

So what was your favourite arc in the first season? Obviously Shizu’s story remains the beating heart of this series and while the episodes about her were always of a high quality, I really enjoyed connecting it back to the kids she was trying to save and the last arc with Rimuru teaching the students, gaining their trust and finding a way to “cure” their predicament. I get the feeling we’ll be seeing those kids again, albeit at a later and more pivotal moment in the series where they can repay their debt to their slime sensei.

The feels.

Just for the record you haven’t read any of the Web Novel or Light Novel this is based on right? That’s pure speculation. Correct, I barely have the patience to read one manga a week let alone get through that many chapters of a novel. With full sentences and hardly any pictures!

Right. And what was your least favourite thing about the series? Aside from my one-sided feud with Gabiru, I think some of the female characters were underutilised at some points. This is a minor nitpick as, with so much of the story yet unadapted, there’s still plenty of time to use them later down the line. But I still would have liked to see more action from Shion and Milim.

More of this please, or better yet a whole series of Shion kicking butt in her suit.

Ahem, speaking of which, in your Best Waifu’s of Fall 2018 list you gave Shion the number 2 position meanwhile in the Best Waifu’s of Winter 2019 list you gave Milim the number 2 position. Care to definitively pick one as all time favourite from this show? Oh god, why are you making me choose? That’s like asking which do I prefer ‘anime boobs’ or ‘anime butts’! But, gun to my head I’m picking Milim–I just prefer her overall personality to Shion’s.

Just look at that face!

Answering the tough questions here folks! So final recommendation and review for ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’? I’d have thought this show would have almost universal appeal but there seemed to be a fair share of people who didn’t care for this show–or maybe they just happened to be especially vocal and in my direct circle of fellow reviewers/commenters. That said, if you enjoy the isekai genre, fantasy, comedy and action you should find something to enjoy about this series. While I had no overwhelming complaints about the series I don’t think it’s the best isekai out there but nevertheless I still enjoyed the experience from beginning to end (or should that be beginning to one fourth of the way through the full story). Final score: 89 out of 100.

I mean, you have to admire my restraint that I didn’t make all the gifs in this review ones like these…

A Meeting Of Monsters and Men – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 17 Review

A Meeting Of Monsters and Men – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 17

slime17

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 17.

So how’s this episode? Another jam-packed episode filled with new and returning characters, ~almost~ confrontations, people foolishly underestimating Rimuru and newly forming alliances and deals.

And is it interesting? Okay, so like I get all this kind of world-building is important to establishing the ‘Jura Tempest Federation’ as a prominent political force in this world. I’m sure all this alliance forming and talk of trade deals and what not is going to be called into play later when things get more serious–it’s just that it’s kind of a lot to take in. Like between the various other Demon Lords and faction leaders from other regions all having a say in the workings of their growing community it’s a bit overwhelming to remember everyone and everything. And it seems like the pace is accelerating as if to reach a satisfying seasonal end-goal in spite of itself–though that last thought is pure speculation on my part.

Cute uniform but I miss her old outfit.

Oohh~ sounds like you have some substantial complaints, that seems like a first. I wouldn’t say complaints–more likely trepidation. I don’t want this series to get bogged down in endless committee meetings which feel more and more frequent and lengthier with each episode. That’s not to say they are not well written and don’t feature a decent amount of amusing character moments but by the same token it doesn’t exactly make for the most consistently dynamic or riveting viewing.

Now that’s an outfit I’ll never get tired of.

Fair enough. So what interesting things do happen in the episode that you did like then? So the healing potions that Rimuru “produces” through his own body are 99% effective at healing near fatal injuries. But Vesta, the exiled minister who came to work for Rimuru has–through his research–managed to make a “full potion” that is 100% effective. And aside from the trading and financial implications of such a development I just really liked this redemption arc for Vesta as a character, it was really endearing to see his accomplishments.

Naww, Vesta. What a good lad.

Anything else? Of course. Throughout the episode there’s just a lot of really cute and funny character moments like Gobta single handedly slaying a giant spider (and then getting excited because of how tasty they are in a hot pot). Also Shion’s violent reaction to being called “tits” by one of the village leaders and seeing Elen and her party back in the show was really nice too! One thing I didn’t like was my favourite loli Demon Lord Milim being given a new outfit, I mean sure the school-girl outfit was cute and all but I miss my fan service! Hopefully this is just an everyday kind of deal and she gets to break out the low-riding panties again during battle!

Gobta is true champion of the Jura forest.

You’re the worst. So overall thoughts? I think there was enough material in this episode to be stretched to two but at the same time having that much time spent on meetings would have felt even more drawn out. Had they expanded it to two and inserted some action scenes I think the overall ratio would have felt better, but it’s understandable if they couldn’t due to budgetary constraints. It’s still a good episode that promises bigger and scarier things to come but not close to this show when its at its best.

Milim’s just the best.

The True Power Of The Demon Lord – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 16 Review

The True Power Of The Demon Lord – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 16

slime16

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 16.

So how’s this episode? Ahhhhh! I’m so happy!

Oh god, what now? The cute pink haired fang girl with the skimpy outfit who’s been teased in the OP since the beginning of this series has ~finally~ appeared… and she’s everything I could have hoped for and more! Ah, I’m in love!

*heart eyes*

Please… stop… it’s embarrassing. No, never!

Wait, weren’t you like literally in love with Shion just last episode? I… I have room in my heart for two… I think…

She just wants some honey.

Oh boy, this is going to be a ~weird~ one folks, strap in. So who is she and what’s her relevance to the narrative? Her name’s Milim and she’s a Demon Lord and upon learning about Rimuru and his budding nation she pays a visit and promptly gets involved with fighting Rimuru’s kijin entourage (Shion included), but he manages to “tame” her with a delicious treat known as ‘honey’ and with the suggestion that being friends with Rimuru is more fun than being a full-time Demon Lord (which is the only reason she is a Demon Lord in the first place–for the fun of it).

Her expressions were adorable all episode.

Right, wait, she’s a Demon Lord? Is this another Demon Lord Loli?! How did this become a trope and so quickly too? I know right, in the space of a couple of seasons we’ve had ‘How Not To Summon A Demon Lord’, ‘Endro!’ and now this show pulling it out and I gotta say I’m still not sick of it! Sorry/not sorry for everyone who is.

I had a reason to include this gif BUTT I forgot.

Of course you’re not. So I know you’ll probably want to talk about her some more but what else happens in this episode? A surprisingly large amount of things at quite a pace too. Vesta, the guy exiled from the Dwarf City by the king way back in Episode 5 returns to work as a researcher for Rimuru. Speaking of returning from exile, Gabiru’s back and he’s joining Rimuru’s town and has been relegated to ‘comic relief whipping boy’ which feels a lot better than Gobta having to cop it. Also Gabiru’s sister Souka is there with her entourage and so Rimuru decides to give them all names which means a level-ip turning the lizardmen into dragonewts which as a result gives the men wings and the women… well let’s not beat around the bush, it turns them into sexy human-looking women. Because of course it does…

Is it racist to say I like how she looks now instead of before?

Okay that is a lot of things happening. Yeah and all that happens before Demon Lord Milim even shows up in the episode! Anyway so they bring Milim to town and immediately she punches Gabiru for calling her “chibi-chan” and did I mention how much I love her?

You did, move on. And so the townspeople are surprisingly cool with a Demon Lord moving in to their town and her declaration that she and Rimuru are “besties” and it turns out it’s because having a Demon Lord align with your city or country or region is not-unlike being under their protection. Of course, what that means going forward is anyone’s guess but I doubt it’s going to be all smooth sailing seeing as Milim has a bunch of Demon Lord cohorts who at this point aren’t even aware she’s joined forces with Rimuru.

A surreal moment in an episode full of them.

So it sounds like you loved this episode quite a bit then yeah? Sure, I mean it wasn’t perfect. I didn’t like the fact that Rimuru had a big important meeting about the future of the town and the only people invited there were the men. Meanwhile the girls were just frollicking in the hot springs (oh yeah, they have a hot springs now too). That kind of sexism I’m not fond of the women’s opinion are just as valid as the men, don’t start excluding them now when you were doing so well before.

I’ve still got time for Shion, especially when she’s serving up the bath service like this.

Anything else you wanted to– I LOVE MILIM! MILIM DAISUKI!

Ugh, end of review!

A New Federation Rises – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 15 Review

A New Federation Rises – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 15

slime15

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 15.

So how’s this episode? Good news! We’ve got a new OP! My prayers were answered! Bad news. It’s not much better than the first one…

Tears of joy for the new OP. Tears of disappointment when it’s not much better.

Well, you win some you lose some… more importantly what happens in the episode? It’s one of those episodes where ~technically~ a lot happens but describing it in great detail doesn’t make for a terribly riveting recap. So I’ll be quick about it; Rimuru pardons the orcs but everyone’s okay with it because who’s going to say no to Rimuru, Treini the dryad makes Rimuru chancellor of the Great Forest of Jura for saving everyone which basically means he’s in charge of all the monsters. The orcs help build a community for everyone and everyone’s getting along great. 3 months pass and then the Dwarf King Gazel Dwargo suddenly shows up to see what’s been going on with all these monsters suddenly getting names and being all civilized and shit. Next minute he’s challenging Rimuru to a sword dual but Rimuru manages to block his most powerful attack earning the King’s respect. Then everything’s cool again and they have a dinner meeting together to discuss matters. Turns out Gazel Dwargo wants to formally recognise the Great Forest of Jura and the monsters living in it as an official country and just like that the Jura Tempest Federation is formed with its hastily named capital city of ‘Rimuru’.

Look at this motley bunch.

Lots of politics huh, sounds kinda dry… As I said, just highlighting what happens doesn’t give a sense of this shows personality and heart. There’s so many good little scenes within this episode, like when the newly named Orc King begs forgiveness of the Kijin whose village was destroyed and offers his head in penance only for the Kijin to show mercy and restraint even with so much pain and hate in their hearts. And even Gabiru manages to impress with his resignation at the thought of being executed for treason only to be excommunicated instead. I mean I’m glad he’s out of the show (though I know he’ll totally be back one day) but still his character arc was at least interesting.

Blocked.

Anything else happen that’s worth mentioning. I don’t trust the King, like at all. I know this episode was trying hard at having him seem like a good, down-to-earth guy what with him having trained with the Kijin elder as a child but I’m not buying it. My money is that he’s only backing the decision to make their place a country so he can “officially” wage war on it later.

I wouldn’t mind living in Rimuru. *cough*

That’s very pessimistic of you, but fair enough. So overall thoughts? Another great episode that’s made hard to talk about because it is more or less in-between arcs and laying the groundwork for future episodes. Nevertheless it’s full of great character moments and interactions and promises of bigger and better confrontations (at least if the OP’s new visuals are anything to go by!) I’m looking forward to whatever this show brings!

Here’s your weekly dose of Shion.

The King, The Tribe and The Holy Slime – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 14 Review

The King, The Tribe and The Holy Slime – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 14

slime14

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 14.

So how’s this episode? It makes an impact, in many senses of the word.

Okay then, so what happens? Putting it succinctly, Gelmud the powerful majin responsible not only for this whole ~march of the pigs~ but also for giving Gabiru his name shows himself on the battlefield, positioning himself between the Orc Lord and the “good guys”. And well, he’s your typical ‘not actually that powerful and kind of a wuss when it comes to crunch time’-kind of bad guys but rather than be defeated by one of our heroes his own creation Geld kills him, eats him and transforms into a Demon Lord level monster called ‘Orc Disaster’. (P.S What’s with all these G-names?)

Bye!

That sounds like trouble. Indeed, and while our kijin friends put up an admirable fight, literally decapitating the big pig it’s no match for his overpowered regenerative and healing abilities as he walks off a decapitation like an athlete would walk off a stitch. So it’s the showdown we’ve all been waiting for Rimuru VS Orc Disaster. And boy does this show pull out all the tricks for this battle! Not only is it visually impressive, filled with the trademark dry humour and full of fun subversion on expectations but it’s also among the most touching “villain” deaths I’ve seen in this type of anime.

That’s what the kids call a ’69’ right? (Sorry)

But isn’t he just some big dumb orc? That’s what I thought too, but like the best shows this isn’t just faceless evil up against our protagonists. This was once a humble orc King, living in the barren wastelands, trying his best to keep his people fed against impossible odds and so when traversing the wastes in search of the Forest of Jura he happened to stumble across Gelmud when he was at his lowest and most desperate and hence why he took the offer that seemingly doomed his whole clan to become a shambling echo of their former selves.

I cried.

So does this fall into that trope you don’t like of “last minute flashback that humanizes the villain seconds before their death”? Somewhat, but this show handles death a lot differently from other shows I’ve seen and as a result it gets away with it. See, after trying everything to kill Orc Disaster (even letting ‘the great sage’ take a turn at “auto-battle”, which was wonderfully meta) Rimuru uses his trump card, that being his ‘Predator’ ability that literally allows him to absorb any threat and kudos to the show, they don’t do the whole ‘you were my enemy but now we can be friends’ shonen trope. Rimuru straight up dissolves Geld into nothingness but not before “absolving him of his sins” and showing him one last look at paradise to ease his guilty mind. I said it back when Shizue died, but Rimuru is ~literally~ God in this anime. The comparisons only mount with each episode!

Our Slime, who art in the sky, hallowed be thy name.

Uh-huh, so good episode then? Yep, wonderful, I loved every single minute of it! Well… except that we’ve still got the same crappy OP as the previous 13 episodes. Keenly hoping since this is the end of this arc that we get a new OP next episode! Please?

This is my only god. Shion is absolute perfection.

An Appetite For Destruction – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 13 Review

An Appetite For Destruction – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 13

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 13.

So how’s this episode? You know, I complain a lot about the lizardmen in this show—actually that’s not strictly true I dislike Gabiru and his ‘yes men’, the female lizardman (lizardwoman?) shows a lot of initiative in seeking out Rimuru and the others to alert them of the news of Gabiru’s usurping of his father and the chaos that has caused their people.

There’s the female lizardman, on the far right, looking tired as heck.

Okay, so what happens in the episode? Well… a whole heck of a lot to be honest. The action in this episode is off the scale in terms of quality and quantity. There’s no less than five separate action based encounters some small, some large but all with a substantial narrative impact on the series. I could go through them all but I’ll focus on what I think is the obviously most important one, and the largest in scale–the rescue of Gabiru and the defeat of the Orc General. First of all, for all the shit I give Gabiru as a character, he shows real bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and doesn’t abandon the goblin soldiers he had previously recruited from other towns, so points in his favour for that bit of leadership prowess. Now, whether he faced the Orc General because his ego was so inflated that he actually thought he could beat him or just to save face in front of his men is up to debate, but he did face off and that too speaks to his character.

Kaboom!

Oh~ sounds like someone’s warming to Gabiru? Hey, it’s not my fault that the show suddenly started writing him better! Besides, he’s the catalyst for what is (up to this point) the most impressive action scene this show has given us!

Well go on then, tell us about it! Okay so basically the Orc General is about to deliver a finishing blow to Gabiru when Gobta of all people (erm, monsters) deflects the blow–reinforcing Gabiru’s misconception that Gobta is the ~true~ leader of Rimuru’s village. Then Ranga joins the party and all hell breaks loose around as Benimaru starts dropping straight-up weapons of mass destruction on the orc army, meanwhile Ranga unleashes literal tornadoes and levels up to a ‘Tempest Storm Wolf’ for his contribution. Also meanwhile Hakuro cuts a swathe through a thousand orcs without breaking a sweat and Shion uses a sword that’s bigger than herself (and that’s saying something) to decimate a fair share of the baddies too! All of this goes on while Rimuru (with wings equipped) watches overhead, like a general commanding his troops. It’s interesting that Rimuru remains non-combative for pretty much the whole episode, but it works because it lets everyone else in the cast have a moment to shine. Because, let’s face it, if Rimuru was down there he’d probably kill all the orcs in half a second with a single move.

Did I mention Rimuru is bascially ‘god’ in this series? I feel like I mentioned that in the ep where Shizue died.

Isn’t that bad though, that there’s a character overlooking who could just eliminate the enemy army so easily and yet doesn’t? I mean ~maybe~ if you want to be like that about it. But the way I see it is that these are people (ugh- “MONSTERS”) who want to be useful, who want to prove their worth and who desire to fight and so Rimuru hanging back and giving them the autonomy to literally fight their own battles is important. Almost as important as Rimuru coming up against the Orc Lord as teased at the end of this episode–big things are coming next week and I’m excited as heck!

Shion can “smash” me any day…

Hungry For Blood – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 12 Review

Hungry For Blood – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 12

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 12.

So how’s this episode? I’ll at least try and reign in the shouting voices in my head, the one side screaming about how much I love Shion and the other side, just as loudly, about how much I hate the lizardmen.

You are what you eat!

Ah, so I take it we get some of both in this episode? Not enough Shion, too much lizardmen! Down with lizardmen!

Protect Shion’s smile!

Okay, we get it! Geez, so what happens in this episode? Well it pretty much continues on at the exact point it ended last week with the Treyni the Dryad requesting assistance of Rimuru to defeat the oncoming orc army. And I liked that they gave us a bit of backstory to who the dryad are as a race and their place in society–turns out they’re kind of a big deal. I also liked her eating a potato chip, small detail to focus on but I like it when anime have their characters ~doing things~ while talking or being talked to and not just standing there like a mindless NPC. She also imparts some important information, namely that like they assumed the orcs are being commanded by an ‘orc lord’–which is bad and also as a result the orcs have acquired the “Starved” unique skill which basically means they’re sustaining solely on the bodies of their enemies and the fallen to gain sustenance and acquire strength.

Elf savagely attacks defenseless potato chip!

That’s a bit grim. It is, but it also ups the ante a little which is good. So Rimuru sends out Souei to negotiate with the lizardmen chieftain (but not before fan-girling over how stoic and handsome he is) and then the rest of the episode is more or less with the lizardmen so I kind of had trouble keeping my attention.

To be fair he is ridiculously handsome.

That’s not a good thing for a reviewer to do you know. Okay I’m exaggerating, I don’t mind the lizardmen chieftain, he seems like a down-to-earth and reasonable guy and the scene with him “negotiating” with Souei is pretty good! Than the tiresome Gabiru shows up to usurp his father’s rule and at this point I was just begging for the annoying twerp to get eaten by an orc.

Smug face engage.

That sure is some grudge you’ve got against him… but wasn’t Gabiru going to take over ~after~ they’d defeated the orc army? You remember. Yes, that’s correct but a mysterious messenger of Gelmuld–the man who ‘named’ Gabiru–shows up and convinces him to do so earlier. I liked this creepy bastard Laplace, he reminded me a bit of Papa Lazarou from ‘The League of Gentlemen’ (there’s a reference none of my readers will get!) so I hope we see more of his shenanigans.

“Hello, Dave?”

Anything else you wanted to add? I’m thinking that Gabiru’s going to have to get a major character adjustment from having witnessed the full brutality of the orc army in order for me to even remotely like him as a character. Hopefully that happens or he just ~goes away~, because I don’t really enjoy the scenes with him in at all which is a shame because literally everything else in this show is great and I look forward to it each week! Also, more Shion please!

If being held under Shion’s boobs meant me being a slime, I’d be a slime 24/7.

Truths and Allies – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 11 Review

Truths and Allies – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 11

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 11.

So how’s this episode? You know, I was really enjoying this episode, what with all the casual banter between all the characters in the goblin town, just good ol’ fashioned fun times for everyone. And then the damned lizard people had to show up and ~ruin~ everything! (Sight hyperbole…)

No.

Well before we jump the gun and get to the negative let’s focus on the positives first! I didn’t realise how much I missed having constant female characters in this show, ones with enthusiasm and excitement and distinct personalities. Shuna and Shion are a bright light shining down upon this show and I can’t believe we went as many episodes as we did without them. Especially best girl Shion who has become Rimuru’s secretary and personal bodyguard which basically means she’s a main character now and I couldn’t be happier!

Don’t pull so hard! *moaning sound*

But weren’t you complaining about her character re-design from last episode when she “evolved”? Right, I probably shouldn’t be calling them ogres anymore since they’re technically Kijin now. Oh and that? Whatever I don’t care, it’s her personality that shines not just her ~nice oppai~.

Shion b(r)e(a)st girl.

Uh-huh, well lest you devolve into talking about breasts too much I’ll get you to move on to what about the episode you didn’t like… The whole shtick with these particular lizard men sucking up to Gabil the son of the leader of the lizard men just absolutely falls flat. They feel like they’re out of a Saturday morning cartoon… a western Saturday morning cartoon not an anime! The one bright spot was when they come to our goblin town to force them all to join their war against the orcs and we’re all (probably) expecting either Rimuru or the ogr–sorry the kaijin to beat up this scrawny lizard but instead they send out the runt of the litter Gobta to take him on. And we wins! It was such a great moment of redemption for the little guy who’s been something of a whipping boy for Rimuru, which while fun kinda felt like it needed to stop otherwise it could have started to look like bullying.

I love derpy crayon art in anime.

So with their leader defeated are the lizard men done with as a plot point? Sadly no. They promise they’ll be back as they carry their leader away, running off with their tails between their legs. I’d rather they just focus on the characters we have rather than throwing in more–and one’s that feel out of place in the show anyway but there’s not much you can do about that. Things got back on track by the end though as the goblins and kaijin and Rimuru have a meeting, and I loved the whole ~atmosphere~ around this meeting, this whole community that he’s managed to set up. Also we are introduced to a dryad who interrupts their meeting to implore Rimuru to defeat the orc lord who is commanding an army of 200,000 orcs. So the stakes are suitably high, even though I imagine if Rimuru really tried he could probably wipe them all out on his own…

Cute dryad. I approve.

So it sounds like a lot happens in this episode? Kind of, like I mentioned earlier there’s a lot of banter and shenanigans between characters which I absolutely loved but this more a ‘setting the stage’ type episode as pieces are put-together for the inevitable showdown. It’s all very exciting and I’m looking forward to it–let’s just hope we can make good use of these lizard men characters, either that or feed them to the orcs.

Now here’s a character redesign I can get into! Can we have a spin-off series called ‘Yakuza Ogres’?

Un-Makeover – ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 10 Review

Un-Makeover – An Anime QandA Review of ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime’ Episode 10

What’s the show? That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Episode 10.

So how’s this episode? So, uh some weirdness happens in this episode and I’m not even sure how to quantify it.

Hmm… okay then, well at least try. So aside from learning who attacked the ogre tribe’s village and the very cute and endearing scenes of Rimuru getting to eat and taste meat for the first time since reincarnating we are given the somewhat obligatory ‘Rimuru decided to give some characters names in order to level them up’ scene. And uh… it’s kind of dumb.

What do you mean exactly? Okay so, it takes all of Rimuru’s ~magicules~ just to level up the six ogre’s, that’s how strong they already are. But rather than giving them any kind of drastic change like it did when Rimuru named the Goblin’s, all it does is make them “sexier”.

Oh wow, you went from a double fang girl to a no fang girl? IN THE BIN!

Uh-huh, and why’s that a problem for you? Your a pervert, that sounds like it should be right up your alley. Because there was nothing wrong with them before! They were already plenty sexy, sure a little rough around the edges but they’ve basically made ~interesting~ looking sexy characters into *generic* looking sexy characters and that’s kinda lame in my opinion!

So you preferred them before, that’s the issue we’re addressing then? It’s not an issue of preference it’s the fact we were introduced to them in such a long winded way that it took an entire episode to even get to the ‘introductions’ stage and now they’ve spent nearly half an episode changing them to be sexier for ~reasons~. I don’t know it just kind of felt pointless to me.

Great, so generic and ~cool~, IN THE BIN.

Okay that’s enough about all that, what about the rest of the episode. Dare I say, equally pointless.

Gasp, such a reversal of fortunes, I thought you were fully on board with whatever direction this show was intending to take. So did I, until they introduced orcs (who are basically just pig-men) and a tribe of lizard peoples (who are exactly what they sound like). And you know what, I don’t care for either of them, honestly I’d rather watch a thousand hours of Rimuru aimlessly bouncing through tall grass then watch whatever the heck was going on in the second half of this episode.

Nope, you suck too. IN. THE. BIN.

You don’t like pigmen or lizardmen, that sounds pretty racist if you ask me! Whatever, it is what it is. Maybe the show will have a point to these scenes later on, but quite frankly this was the first time I was legitimately bored with this show. Focus on the characters you’ve just introduced (the ogres) rather than haphazardly forcing a bunch of new characters on top of the ones we just met! I don’t know, maybe I am racist for not caring about the plight of lizard people, but right now I’m still at a loss for why they are even included in the first place!

This moment was cute though!
