Week 10 of Fall 2019 Anime In Review

All the new anime episodes I watched in Week 10 of the Fall 2019 season ranked and reviewed!

All the seasonal anime I watched in the tenth week of Fall 2019!

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 9

81/100 (DOWN 2 points from previous episode)

This particular arc of the show has been an undoubted highlight so far, and while this individual episode felt a bit weird and unfocused (the sup plot with Fuyuto trying to court his crush was fun but very distracting and tonally inconsistent) the stuff with Irene found a much more satisfying balance between comedy and drama (the scene with the mask had me laughing out loud) and while the episode ends on a particularly dramatic cliffhanger I’m as excited as I am a little bit worried about this arc’s coming conclusion if my predictions are anything to go by…

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 9

83/100 (DOWN 3 points from previous episode)

This episode was painfully predictable from beginning to end which certainly went a ways to hamper my overall enjoyment, but it was also kind of fun and by the time the final minutes approached it was downright touching. Nevertheless this is probably the weakest this show has been so far so hopefully it improves from here…

Val x Love – Episode 10

Why have, one antagonist when you can have three? Well considering how many protagonists we have I can think of a couple of reasons why we ~shouldn’t!~ namely there’s too many people to keep track of, but at the very least they all look distinct so there’s no confusing who is good and who is bad. Nevertheless this is still a highly enjoyable episode, that neither skimps on the fan-service nor the comedy and comes up otherwise excellent because of it–even if it’s more or less more of what we’ve already seen so far.

The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious – Episode 9

My favourite thing about this episode was the idea of inescapably powerful antagonist that transcended time and space and could even render gods and goddesses helpless in its wake. And while I’m glad that Valkyrie; Goddess of Destruction was the one to seal the antagonist away–it all felt a little easy in hindsight. Though the subsequent training scene and subsequent misunderstanding between Valkyrie, Seiya and Ristarte was worth the price of admission alone!

Didn’t I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?! – Episode 9

For the last couple of weeks I was not-so-secretly hoping that this show would go back to comedic adventuring and shenanigans and forego the excessive and serious back stories that had dragged the overall tone of the show down. And in some respects my wish was granted as the Wyvern hunting quest felt more in line with how this show started out but even then between the laughs and action the show still felt needlessly tied to being occasionally over-serious which clashed awkwardly with the otherwise excellent comedy.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 10

87/100 (UP 2 points from previous episode)

I didn’t think an otherwise simplistic ‘date episode’ would help restore so much of what made this series so enjoyable in the earlier episodes. Likewise, I didn’t think that I’d be rooting for Ringo as a love interest for Tsukasa over Lyrule but this episode made Ringo wonderful all round. Also, the overarching storyline of this series–while minimally referred to here–still takes substantial steps forward and makes the final couple of episodes highly anticipated for me.

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 9

89/100 (DOWN 1 point from previous episode)

More of ‘Food Wars!’ just being its usual high quality self, the over reliance on flashbacks dropped it a few points but otherwise still a great episode.

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 8

91/100 (DOWN 4 points from previous episode)

It’s kind of weird that in a show ostensibly about jet racing we’ve now had two solid episodes without anything of the sort–thankfully what we’ve had instead is ridiculous comedic shenanigans, fun and sexy fan service and genuinely wonderful character development and emotional moments too. In other words, just a great time all round!

Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 7

91/100 (UP 10 points from previous episode)

Things are improved in this episode (at least in my opinion), for my full thoughts check out my collaborative review with Irina on I Drink And Watch Anime!

AZUR LANE – Episode 9

93/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

There’s a lot of really powerful message in this show that are further highlighted throughout this episode though my favourite being that even if two nations are at war its people don’t need to be and can forge strong friendships. And after the high stakes action of the previous episode it’s nice to get some low-key, cute girl style down time with the three best girls on the show.

After School Dice Club – Episode 10

94/100 (UP 9 points from previous episode)

Back in my episode 3 review I had a good ol’ whine that cute girl show’s shouldn’t have such a focus on peripheral male characters–and while I stand by that fact emphatically–this show has somewhat morphed into something other than a cute girl show, so much so that I even hasten to put it in that genre anymore. As a result I can view the pivot into the more drama/romance aspects of this show in a much more favourable light and even root for our girls to find love–wherever it happens to come from. And yes, this episode made me cry a little at the end…

My Hero Academia – Episode 71

94/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

For a character who was only properly introduced a couple this episode went massively out of its way to dive deep into Suneater’s backstory, powers, and pretty much dedicate an entire episode to the young hero. And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t exhilarated by the action or drawn in by the impressive characterisation–likewise the truly compelling confrontation between Suneater and the unique trio of villains he faced off against and his ingenious way of defeating them. I do have to wonder why we haven’t got anywhere near as compelling stories about our female characters on this show but I’ve pretty much come to expect that from this show by now…

Fire Force – Episode 20

95/100 (DOWN 5 points from previous episode)

How do you follow up a “perfect episode” with pretty much more of the same–and while the female characters are expectedly sidelined (hence the lower score)–this episode still manages some breathtaking action with ingenuitive tactics, awe-inspiring visuals and tense and dramatic set-pieces that rank among some of this shows’ best. Just ‘Fire Force’ being damn awesome as per usual!

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 10

96/100 (UP 5 points from previous episode)

Jaguarman (or “Jaguar warrior” as the subtitles have for some reason began to call her) was an odd comedic highlight in her first appearance some episodes ago, so having her appear again and feature so much and so central to the episode was bound to pique my interest. What’s more surprising is that we’re introduced to a larger than life ‘antagonist’ in the form of second goddess of the alliance Queztalcoatal–and even with her fantastic appearance she still manages to be upstaged by the sublime silliness of Jaguarman.

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 10

99/100 (UP 5 points from previous episode)

Often in my reviews for this show I’ve said things like “this feels like a turning point in the story” or likewise but truly this episode feels like something special with its honestly heartbreaking and beautiful exploration of Furuhashi’s past with her parents, but what’s more remarkable for me personally though is that how it somehow managed to make fifth ranked Furuhashi (in harem standings at least) rocket all the way to the top–at least for the time being! An almost flawless episode.

Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 6

Psycho Pass continues to dip in overall quality but is still a visually impressive and dramatic experience, my full thoughts can be found in my collaborative review on I Drink And Watch Anime dot com.

Didn’t I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?! – Episode 8

82/100 (DOWN 2 points from previous episode)

Had this series started as a run-of-the-mill fantasy-action isekai, having yet another episode that explores dramatic subject matter and complex backstories might have seemed like a logical and necessary aspect of the show. But for a series like this that started as legitimately and consistently hilarious and self-aware comedy spend so much time with needlessly cruel throwaway villains and drama-for-the-sake-of-drama plot developments feels honestly a bit lazy. Sure there’s still some wonderful character moments and the occasional glimmer of brilliance with some laugh-out-loud gags, but I have to wonder if we’ll ever get back to the light-hearted subversiveness that made the first few episodes such a genuine treat.

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 8

This episode felt like an episode of CSI: Miami and your better believe I mean that as a compliment! Its lurid, glossy, dumb and entertaining in all the right ways and had considerable dramatic stakes amidst some genuinely funny moments, decent twists and a truly despicable villain. Great stuff all round, hopefully the show can continue at this level of quality going forward!

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 9

85/100 (UP 5 points from previous episode)

If ever there was a show to ‘un-jump the shark’ then this should be the poster boy. For all of last week’s absurdities this week entirely course corrects by delivering compelling action, adventure as well as significantly forwarding the plot into thoroughly interesting territory–and that’s just the first half of the episode! The second half ratchets up the fan-service and shenanigans to remind us of this shows roots while simultaneously leaving us wanting more of this honestly unique isekai!

After School Dice Club – Episode 9

85/100 (DOWN 2 points from previous episode)

My favourite part of this episode was the extended sequence showcasing our new addition to the cast, Emilia, re-inventing the childhood school-yard game of ‘Daruma Doll Fell Down’ or ‘Red Light, Green Light’ as its known in the West–seeing how a tried and true and pretty simplistic game could be transformed with just a few rule tweaks and gameplay reward mechanics was downright inspiring. The rest of the episode was more or less what we’ve come to expect from this series; i.e. cute girls playing board games.

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 8

86/100 (DOWN 2 points from previous episode)

The overall animation quality in this episode took a noticeable hit but thankfully only in the first half, as the second half made way for full blown beach episode shenanigans–and while not up to this show’s highest fan-service standards there was still a bevvy of scantily clad girls to behold as well as all the light-hearted service these episodes deliver. But it wasn’t all just eye candy as we also learned the identity of a traitor amidst the E-rank girls which added an extra layer of intrigue and drama to the proceedings.

The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious – Episode 8

86/100 (UP 1 point from previous episode)

The first half of this episode was honestly a comedic masterpiece, with so much attention devoted to upping the ante and subverting expectations in all the right ways–delivering joke after joke–set piece after set piece and delivering so many wonderfully quotable lines and memorable visuals. Where it dips perhaps is when the action takes the centre-stage, in the second half although to be honest the second-half was pretty damn great too, if slightly predictable.

Val x Love – Episode 9

87/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

Val x Love finally hits its stride (it only took 9 damn episodes) by becoming a fan-service classic on equal par with some of the all-time greats starting with a girl on girl shenanigan fuelled train groping scene followed up by an extensive bath sequence and an introduction to yet another girl for Takuma’s burgeoning harem. The only thing stopping this from ‘true classic’ status is the fact that we’re still pretty heavily censored but I’m still holding out hope for all the glory to be revealed in an uncensored blu-ray. Until then this episode remains, consistently entertaining, hilarious at times, and still very sexy even with all those pesky fog clouds!

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 8

90/100 (DOWN 4 points from previous episode)

With the cliffhanger announcement that came with the previous episode, that Director Nakiri would be taking over as the judge of the Team Shokugeki’s–the true narrative reason behind that decision showed itself in the subsequent episode, namely that the previous judging panel of two men and one woman would become one man and three women in what can only be seen as an effort to triple the parody–which honestly isn’t almost a bad thing because both are equally entertaining. Time will tell if this is the beginning of the end or just the beginning of something different…

AZUR LANE – Episode 8

90/100 (UP 1 point from previous episode)

This episode was an action-packed spectacle, while also showing that this series has its heart in the right place. The only thing detracting from it was some soft animation and line work that made some faster shots look borderline unfinished, but everything else was intense, exciting and high stakes excellence.

My Hero Academia – Episode 70

91/100 (DOWN 1 point from previous episode)

While it certainly feels like this particular arc is taking a long time to get properly started, I can’t help but be impressed with the amount of tension it manages to wring from what is mostly, yet another preparation episode–sure when the action finally does kick off towards the end of the episode there’s a sense of release–but there’s still obviously a long ways off from this arc being completed and from Eri being rescued.

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 9

91/100 (DOWN 4 points from previous episode)

How do you defeat an ego-maniacal goddess? Enlist your own one of course! While the decision to ‘hire’ Ishtar by our heroes to fight Gorgon isn’t exactly unexpected what is unexpected is the way they go about–in an almost comically genius approach that satisfies both her ego and greed that’s especially funny if you know anything about the character of Rin from other ‘Fate’ series. What I think made this episode truly excellent though was the revelation that Ishtar and her host body cohabitate within her mind (in a 70/30 split in case you were wondering) and the quiet moments that come subsequently between Ritsuka and Ishtar that help humanise an otherwise larger than life character.

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 7

92/100 (UP 2 points from previous episode)

I mentioned last week that this show’s strongest suit was its comedy and once again it went and delivered big in the way with laughs with some of the most unexpected developments coming from otherwise throwaway gag lines. This episode entirely confirms that not only is their otaku-leaning teacher hot for her students but that she’s committed to take the “harem route” when it comes to courting them. Wasn’t this show supposed to be about rifle shooting?!

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 9

94/100 (EVEN with previous episode)

It’s interesting that, in an episode that could have been especially serious given its subject matter, that the show takes a more light-hearted approach to its presentation. Spoilers incoming, but it turns out that Furuhashi–who wants to study astronomy–despite her penchant for literature and the arts–is actually the daughter of not one but two mathematics geniuses. But when her mother died, her father was left an empty shell of a man who neglected his daughter and her interests in mathematics–even going as far as striking her for even bringing up the subject in his presence. And undeniably this is heavy subject matter but because of Furuhashi’s determined and upbeat personality it doesn’t seem to affect her as much as it should–which might seem like a failing in the shows representative tone but if anything only highlights how much Furuhashi has had to repress in order to continue as a functioning person. The second part of this episode will be the ‘make or break’ moment in this character arc and whether the show has the chops to execute the dramatic potential of this storyline.

And here we have the first 100/100 episode of the Fall 2019 anime season because honestly there isn’t a single thing about this episode I would change, from the ‘calm before the storm’ opening minutes to the pre-Nether parts which were the perfect blend of comedy and tension–this episode went in directions I didn’t expect and were all the stronger for it. Though it should be no surprise that the best parts of the episode were the pair of fight scenes featuring our strong female characters–both unique, action-packed and empowering in their own separate ways. If there’s honestly anyone still out there who thinks this show is sexist then they are beyond delusional at this point. An amazing episode from beginning to end!

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 7

I won’t read into the symbolism of a fried egg USB being between a robot girls legs…

This show has always been a bit off-kilter (which is a part of its appeal) but this episode simultaneously felt very weird and very familiar with a plot reminiscent of an episode of CSI but with the kind of anime and Japan-centric shenanigans such as sex robots, trading cards and weird USB’s. Oh and we’re also introduced to Sherlock’s brother Mycroft, who makes an interesting addition to this burgeoning cast. At the end of the day it’s just an entertaining 24 minutes and who can fault that?

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 8

Just running alongside a missile to manually guide it, you know normal swordsman stuff.

The term ‘jump the shark’ is something I hasten to use in reference to anime–especially fantasy anime where magic is a thing–but the kind of ridiculous, borderline nonsensical leaps in narrative logic and complete removal of believable actions that this episode showcased wholehearted earns the ‘jump the shark’ label. To (briefly) set the scene the town is being beset by fire demons and only by destroying a magical staff at the center of the roaring inferno can the demons be stopped. Having tried (and failed) to launch a missile at the target–Aoi, our swordswoman prodigy–decides she’ll manually guide the missile to its target by running alongside it. It’s a sequence of less than five minutes but almost all of it is incredulous beyond belief and makes zero sense if you think about it for even a second. Honestly this episode is so logic-less that it should be scoring at least 10 points less than I gave it but despite all its absurdity and stupidity it is honestly entertaining and the rest of the episode feels in-line with what’s come before so I can’t be too harsh of a judge on it.

Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 5

I wouldn’t mind letting the chief squish me like that… I mean what?!

Probably my least favourite episode of the show so far, it’s nowhere near the point to be alarmed by it but its at least worth mentioning–read my collaborative review with Irina from I Drink And Watch Anime for my extended thoughts on the episode.

It’s ironic–I complained so much about how I wasn’t particularly enjoying the dark road this show had taken periodically in the previous two episodes and now that it has delivered what is ultimately a fluff-piece, slice of life-esque beach episode I only seemingly have more complaints. It’s not that this episode is ‘bad’ by any stretch of the imagination, its at times great but it also suffers from the fact that its recycling the same joke for the majority of its run time. Wise wants to have normie fun > Wise cooks up shenanigans that seem ordinary to her but are outlandish to the people of her new world > it all falls apart in a comedic fashion. Repetitiveness aside, I did appreciate and relate to Wise’s enthusiasm for seeing her friends in skimpy swimsuits, after all what’s a forced beach episode without considerable bikini fan service!

Val x Love – Episode 8

84/100 (DOWN 1 point from previous episode)

My favourite part about this episode is just how unabashed they are about finding ways to squeeze in fan-service but explain it within the narrative in a way that’s kind of hard to argue about. Plus the show at least attempts to show all the steps in becoming a lover, from hand-holding for an hour all the way to sexy near-nude photo shoots with phallic ice creams involved. Also Yakumo best girl and we get plenty of her here so obviously this episode scores high in that regard.

It’s more of the same and that’s hard to fault considering how consistent this series has been–not only at being funny and entertaining–but also in being cohesive and following up on things in a way a lot of comedy shows might disregard. Seiya continues to be a wonderfully loathsome protagonist and the introduction of a complete opposite in the form of Rosalie proves not only the benefits of Seiya’s frequently infuriating ‘play style’ but that existing in extremes (in either direction) is no way to succeed.

After School Dice Club – Episode 8

87/100 (DOWN 5 points from previous episode)

We’re finally properly introduced to the fourth member of our titular ‘After School Dice Club’ in the form of foreigner Emilia who adds a welcome, if predictable element to the series. The second-half of the episode dealing with the club’s attempt at a Board Game Cafe for the school festival is much more interesting, even if it brings back some side characters I’m not particular interested in…

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 7

88/100 (UP 1 point from previous episode)

Azumi’s ‘overboost’ form is damn sexy. Also that gun is *huge*.

What’s great about this episode is seeing Azumi’s journey from frail sick girl to badass fighter with her Overboost connection with Rigel saving the day after the Zex attempt an invasion for the second time. Where I think this episode falls slightly short of brilliance is in that everything happens so fast that it almost feels like playing a mobile game (complete with premium currency style speed-ups) rather than a truly satisfying narrative experience. That said it’s also plenty entertaining, extremely fun and loaded with laughs, feels and fan-service enough to make up for any narrative deficiencies or gaps in logic.

AZUR LANE – Episode 7

89/100 (DOWN 8 points from previous episode)

This episode kind of exists in two-halves, the first half being ostensibly a lengthy recap episode that feels like endless padding but despite the padding it almost feels necessary considering the unexpected dramatic upheaval that comes from our hero ship Enterprise being ‘possessed’ by something under the sea which leads her to go supanova and destroy her enemy with the kind of ruthlessness I didn’t expect from this show. So between monumental fan-service in the previous episode and now dramatic upheavals in this one, its hard not to be impressed by this show’s willingness to take risks!

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 6

90/100 (EVEN with previous episode)

Whatever you may choose to say about this show up to this point, there’s no doubt in my mind that comedy is this series’ strongest suit. Sure we get the requisite compelling qualifying action of Round 3 and 4 of the beam rifle showdown, but we’re also treated to some honestly affirming character development as well as some laugh out loud comedy. Hikari’s various reactions and off-hand remarks throughout this episode were an absolute joy and made the experience all the more enjoyable because of it.

Fire Force – Episode 18

92/100 (DOWN 3 points from previous episode)

For what ostensibly amounts to a training episode not only does this episode have big laughs and surprisingly dynamic action it also contains some considerable character development–at least on Shinra’s part. Excellent stuff all round.

My Hero Academia – Episode 69

92/100 (UP 2 points from previous episode)

It’s weird how an episode that’s ostensibly just a bunch of people in a room having a meeting is one of my favourites of ‘My Hero Academia’s’ 4th season so far. A lot of that comes down to the fact that the writing is so strong and its execution likewise that with every sentence the stakes seem to grow and the sheer scale of what our heroes are up against unfolds. Also, I’m glad Froppy and Ochako (and the other women such as Dragoon and Bubble Girl) at least get to add something more to this episode besides being window-dressing, we’re still a long way from me being happy with their treatment but this episode is still plenty compelling.

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 7

93/100 (EVEN with previous episode)

If the fourth season of ‘Food Wars’ continues along the way it’s been going it could very well be the show’s best season. It’s emotionally rich and satisfying with so many character moments culminating in a gorgeous experience while still retaining the good humour, fast action and fan-service (both of the sexual and food variety) that have made this show a winner for so long.

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 6

93/100 (UP 2 points from previous episode)

Indeed, two ‘backs’ I’d like to ‘push forward’ onto.

Arguably a fan-service high point for this show, ‘Kandagawa Jet Girls’ goes all in with the shenanigans and comedy and its there where the true appeal of this series seems to lie, I mean sure the races are high energy and fun–but when the show is just about girls having fun–it feels a lot more entertaining. Also, despite all the fun-times the show also manages to show just how big it’s heart is with Rin and Aoi finally getting to be open and honest with each other in an honestly emotionally fulfilling conclusion to their arc.

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 8

94/100 (UP 4 points from previous episode)

Best girl Uraka gets an entire episode to show why she’s best girl and it’s the episode is just the usual high entertainment, wonderful characterization, hilarious comedy and excellent fan service with just enough progression in the overall narrative to make it feel worthwhile without going overboard and committing to something the series isn’t ready to commit too.

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 8

95/100 (UP 4 points from previous episode)

Action never looks as good in stills as it does in movement but this scene was amazing.

This episode is a legitimate ‘balls-to-the-wall’ action extravaganza the likes of which rarely get the time to shine in episodic anime (at least the ones I watch) and not only is it with awe and reverence that I get to watch such a well-animated, fluid and borderline over-the-top action set piece but the fact that it ties itself so flawlessly into the unfolding narrative, has high-stakes that result in tragic and emotional character deaths and remains so enjoyable to watch means this is a pure success no matter where you stand. Truly an epic action fuelled masterpiece of an episode!

I swear they oughta make a spin-off series with the kids in the street gang as they were probably the most interesting and entertaining thing this show has done so far (aside from our Sherlock protagonist), the show balanced a more light-hearted story that was filled with child-like shenanigans but still managed to inject substantive menace with the episode’s borderline insane, spontaneously rapping villain.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 7

Seems like a lot of our surface-level “light-hearted” isekai anime this season have something of penchant for misery, maybe I’m just overly sensitive to the kind of ostensibly heavy handed tactics that mistake ‘edgy’ drama for actual drama as if this anti-aristocracy, pro-democracy series needed to invoke North Korea-esque dramatics instilled on its antagonists to sell the message that corporal punishment, degredation and politically motivated cannibalism is bad. Still, it’s a damn good episode all things considered, especially the ending which genuinely had me on the edge of my seat…

Val x Love – Episode 7

For the first time since this series began I honestly had no large complaints about this episode. Not only was the fan service kinda unique, fun and well drawn but Takuma’s development as a protagonist worthy of his harem is beginning to shine through. This is more like the ‘Val x Love’ experience I was hoping for–now let’s just hope they can stick the landing with a properly uncensored version come the blu-rays!

The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious – Episode 6

While I’d say a lot of this episode was somewhat predictable, it at least managed to surprise by taking its time to getting to predictability. What’s that? How could an episode that’s otherwise predictable benefit from being predictable and slow? Well it’s because honestly this show, with its track-record could of found any number of comedic shortcuts to get to the outcome and left an acceptable but otherwise unfulfilling conclusion to an otherwise dramatic part of the story. But instead the show devoted all of its time to the rescue of an otherwise (as much as it pains me to admit it) inconsequential part of this series. This was the more relatable, less absurd conclusion to a story-arc that worked more than it didn’t.

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 6

This episode gives us a lot of back story on Shuri thanks to a somewhat emotional but also somewhat hilarious flashback told to us by the spirit of swordmaker trapped in her sword (just go with it) but despite the revelations that come from that story it’s best girl Yuni who comes out on top as far as development is concerned–not only finding the confidence in herself but also the power to Overboost with Am-chan, and it’s a downright adorable transformation!

Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 4

When it comes to anime I generally do, but thanks for the advice!

There’s no denying this is the weakest (new) ‘Psycho Pass’ episode to come this season but obviously it’s not without its redeeming qualities–of which you can find in my season collaborative review with Irina on I Drink And Watch Anime dot com.

While my complaints about the previous episode are still in full effect (there’s no need for a show like this to go that dark with its content in my opinion) this episode did a darn sight better in incorporating that “darkness” into the overall narrative and likewise have its effects feel meaningful to the present. There was some noticeable tonal whiplash between the funniest parts of this show (which were expectantly plentiful) and the drama (which was at times heartbreaking) but thankfully we got leaned more on the side of ‘happy ending’ this time than the previous one.

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 7

Can I ship 3 people together? Because I ship these 3 together.

Here we’re given something of a double dose of Ogata, and not so soon after her previous prominent feature in Episode 3 which makes me wonder if the show isn’t gearing up for an Ogata ending as far as this jumbled harem goes! Nevertheless we are treated to a funny, occasionally touching but otherwise unremarkable episode of ‘We Never Learn’ that has its highlights heavily focused in the comedy rather than anything else.

My Hero Academia – Episode 68

Can we just get a whole show with these women (and the other badass, heavily underutilised women in this series)?

I’ll be blunt here, the best part of this episode was the opening couple of minutes that showcased (albeit truncated) Ochako and Froppy on their work study program kicking ass and taking names–it was wonderful–as were the two female heroes they were working under. And then because apparently the author of this manga can’t help but prioritising the male characters over the female ones we’re treated to a needlessly long ‘ego boost’ for a third-rate character who is barely worth a mention at this point. If you’re wondering why my score is so high for this episode despite me complaining about the majority of its content its that the aforementioned prologue was so good and that the parts with the villains were genuinely compelling and tense that it made all the other less interesting parts much more tolerable by comparison.

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 5

I had a rude joke here but decided to delete it, let your imagination run wild with what it was!

In Episode 3 Hikari remarked that the sport of Rifle Shooting was kinda boring to watch, an ominous almost portentous thing for a show just about that very subject to say. A part of me worried it was the writer saying to the audience “don’t get your hopes up for something exciting” but thankfully that proved not to be the case as Hikari’s qualifying round was just about as compelling and emotion-filled as any other sports anime I’ve ever watched (but made better because it’s a cute girl).

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 5

A lot of this episode is simply spent building up a new rivalry for our ‘Jet Girls’ with the idol cum jetracers known collectively as ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, and thankfully for the audience not only are these girls charismatic and entertaining but also (possibly?) a couple too–or at least as far as “coupling” this show is willing to go. The heart of this episode remains Aoi’s reluctance to get closer to Rin–regardless of how much she wants to–and showcases just how painfully shy and reserved the poor girl is when it comes to opening up to another person. The episode ends on a cliffhanger with the race about to begin and next episode looks to be an excellent pay off to all this build-up.

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 7

Trying to work out what fetish this giant woman caters for, probably quite a few.

There’s only one word that suitably describes this episode and that word is “epic”–it’s kind of hard to believe we’re only at episode 7 out of 21 because throughout this episode there is this palpable feeling that we’re at a penultimate crossroads situation. There’s big action, big drama, dramatic reveals, high stakes, sacrifices, twists, the calm before the storm and then the summoning of the ultimate ‘big bad’, Goddess of the Demonic Beasts–Tiamat–which is all kinds of ridiculous and terrifying and wonderful and weird. This show defies expectations and classification and even review, it’s just freakin’ awesome, okay?!

After School Dice Club – Episode 7

Can the show just turn into a yuri anime between these too? Because I’d like that very much.

Once again I am surprised at how well this show is going considering where it started, honestly the characterisation in this episode was flawless but more than that the first half of this episode may as well have been a bonafide 100/100 episode because it delivered on so many levels it’s kind of insane to even think about. Maki, the delinquent turned good samaritan from Episode 3 decides to take our shy flower of a protagonist Miki on a summer “date” to a river and the chemistry and flirtation between these two is off the charts endearing… but more than that we get an honest look at how two otherwise completely opposite people could become friends (or maybe something more–wishful thinking on my part for sure), it’s honestly just sublime. The second half of the episode is more of what has come previously, hence the fact that this is only a 92/100 and not something higher but it’s still the best episode of this show so far.

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 6

‘Food Wars!’ is an excellent source for out of context weird screen caps!

The worst thing about shonen protagonists (or at least one of the worst things) is their ceaseless ability to overcome every and all obstacle put between them and their goal, its unrealistic and sometimes downright infuriating. Then sometimes a shonen protagonist earns their ‘against all odds’ win that seemingly comes out of nowhere… Among the many things ‘Food Wars’ is good at is creating an impossible obstacle to overcome and have whatever character is facing it overcome it with intelligence, savviness, technique and teamwork. And indeed it was literally the teamword that made the dream work in this episode that in clumsier hands could have seemed lazy but here felt well-earned and downright inspiring!

Fire Force – Episode 17

Is that any way to refer to your brother?! Sho some respect!

This episode wasn’t the dictionary definition of perfect, but it’s a perfect episode of ‘Fire Force’ by which I mean it managed to perfectly strike the balance between its substantial dramatic content as well as its commitment to compelling, stylistically invigorating action set-pieces as well as off-beat humour and plenty of character moments that only resonate with prior exposure. Every character was at the top of their game here and likewise our first proper introduction to Shinra’s long-lost brother Sho is appropriately dramatic, high-stakes and downright flawless. Also, I’m glad they didn’t just kill of the character of Lisa after her dark turn, it would have been an easy way to earn cheap ‘drama’ points but they took the high road and left it open for a redemption story down the way.

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 5

79/100 (UP 4 points from previous episode)

Lucy fangirling over her favourite sumo wrestler was adorable.

Things are a bit more low-key and low stakes (nobody gets murdered for one thing!) and its focus on two under-utilised characters–Mary and Lucy–really benefits the show as not only are they interesting characters (Lucy especially) but it helps endear us to them and by extension the setting of Kabukicho itself as we’re given a bit of back story. Easily the best episode of this series so far!

Val x Love – Episode 6

As a protagonist Takuma has been a bit lacking in character progression–there’s been plenty of backstory and explanation for his severe social anxiety but little in the way of real progress. Thankfully this episode attempts to rectify that and as a result he’s a lot more endearing–let’s hope it sticks and we’re not back to square one next episode. Also the scene between him and Natsuki was surprisingly sexy so there’s that too.

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 4

Their otaku club advisor made this for them, lol.

The best thing about this episode is the introduction of the painfully otaku teacher Tsuramaki-sensei who becomes the rifle club’s advisor and who kind of saves this show from declining further–which is hard for me to say because this show has a lot of good about it but likewise doesn’t really know how (or want to know how) to progress with its central subject matter being kind of dry in comparison to its positively enjoyable characters.

Well that’s one way to get out of a sticky situation when you’ve got god-like abilities.

I think it’s a bit of a failing when a series mistakes endlessly miserable backstories for dramatic character development, which kind of felt like this series was doubling down on with the backstories of Reina and Pauline which were filled with parental deaths, child slavery and betrayals and absolute misery and thus didn’t really endear me to them any more but just made me feel like I’d rather be watching something else. Thankfully that was only a minor part of the episode and we got the much needed backstory for Mile/Adele which unlike the others was compelling, multi-faceted and filled with both emotion and good humour. Suffice to say this show does comedy a lot better than it does tragedy.

After School Dice Club – Episode 6

Brutally honest friends are the best kind of friends.

If this show becomes more about Midori’s trials and tribulations about becoming a game author herself I could see this show becoming downright excellent as this episode felt the most cohesive and interesting the show has been so far. Not that the ‘girls playing analogue board games’-shtick wasn’t endearing, it’s just a bit of a repetitive one.

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 6

You’d think watching a show up to its sixth episode would make you less confused not more but so dense is the FGO universe that they keep throwing things at the audience that only players of the game would probably understand. That said it’s not really a bad thing, it just means you have to adjust your thinking and appreciate the fact you’re not going to have everything neatly explained to you. That aside the scenes with Ishtar were fantastic and the characters continue to be the most thoroughly enjoyable thing about this series.

The power of lap pillow’s from busty elf girls is positively supernatural!

More than any anime “couple” this season I sincerely hope the budding relationship between Tsukasa and Lyrule develops and progresses as I really enjoyed these two together and more than anything I just want Lyrule to be happy because she’s absolute best girl and it’s not just because I apparently have a thing for busty blonde elves… Oh and the rest of the episode is pretty great too, even if the stuff with Roo learning her multiplication tables was solved in a way that didn’t really make sense if you think about it too hard.

Hilarious–is the best way to describe this episode–then surprisingly smart–then by the time the credits are about to roll; potentially depressing. So in other words this is something of an emotional roller coaster of an episode, it’s also jam-packed full of callbacks to earlier episodes, funny new characters and quotable scenes. It’s honestly a hard show to fault at this point because it knows what it is and it does it consistently well. Big thumbs up from me!

Fire Force – Episode 16

90/100 (DOWN 3 points from previous episode)

Even when ‘Fire Force’ is struggling with a particular arc it’s still better than a majority of anime (that 90/100 score should attest to that). I think my problem is how much time they’re spending on this particular arc when seemingly more important past arcs were swept through in record time. It’s not that these new characters aren’t interesting (though the little boy is kinda dull) it’s that I wonder how much of a point it all has when its a foregone conclusions (based on the OP visuals) that both Vulcan and Yu join Fire Force Company 8. That said Giovanni makes for a truly loathsome and inhuman villain so that’s pretty entertaining, also I’m somewhat glad Lisa didn’t end up just being some pointless female character herself for the sake of window dressing but something of a villain herself–if nothing else I’m interested what will happen to her but I can’t imagine it’s going to be anything redemptive.

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 5

90/100 (DOWN 5 points from previous episode)

As far as kind of main-but-not-really-main characters go, Takumi Aldini is among my least favourite just from virtue of him being kind of bland, but credit where credit’s due an episode almost entirely devoted to him doesn’t hurt as much as I thought it would–in fact it’s pretty damn great! Sure a lot of that comes down to this episode being unpredictable–something this series isn’t always is–and so that’s considerably appreciated, but at the end of the day this is just an enjoyable and entertaining episode that while skirting the realms of ‘reality cooking show fare’ at time benefits from being distinctly not that and distinctly ‘Food Wars’–which means action, silliness, fan-service and fun.

My Hero Academia – Episode 67

91/100 (UP 4 points from previous episode)

I only have one complaint about this episode–how is Deku so surprised that his mentor All Might is going to die? I know they address it literally in the episode, but I still kind of find it inexcusable considering the guy’s been coughing up blood since pretty much Episode 1 of the first season–all I see when I see All Might is a guy with a timer rapidly ticking towards zero and for Deku to have neglected his mentors frail state all this time feels cheap. That said, nearly everything else in this episode is really great, from the truly tense confrontation between Overhaul as his daughter Eri clings to Deku in the street to the emotionally charged discussion between Deku and All Might as the latter discloses every part of his past for Deku’s benefit.

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 5

It seems that this is a week of tortured backstories for cute girls as the cutest girl in this show Matoi gets her fair due of character development and it pays off–not only by giving us an emotional core to help us understand why she’s so timid and unwilling to fight–but it’s also packs a surprisingly dramatic punch and her transformation and the powers that come with it or not only unexpectedly cool but devastatingly powerful. Never underestimate the quiet ones!

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 6

93/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

Bath house scenes are plentiful in anime, in-fact this very show had one its first episode of this second season, and yet here we are again (although the aforementioned was a hot springs, this time it’s a public bath so they’re totally not just trying to have more fan-service for the sake of it, okay?) but regardless of intentions it was a hilarious first half that let Nariyuki’s adorable younger siblings a chance to partake in the shenanigans for a change. The second half prioritised the harsh realities of university entrance interviews but still managed to squeeze a decent amount of comedy out of the situation too.

Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 3

95/100 (UP 1 point from previous episode)

Out of context this is a weird sentence.

Irina and I talked plenty about this episode on her site, but if you want the short of it, this episode is the same insanely high quality it has been for the previous couple of episodes while adding more interesting characters that add substantially to the world while fleshing out our current characters and adding to the overall narrative in a way that feels fresh and compelling without the need for cheap tactics. It’s just fucking great, y’all.

AZUR LANE – Episode 6

97/100 (UP 8 points from previous episode)

Best girl Laffey bringing the body positivity messages.

In my Episode 4 review I remarked how much I would love a ‘slice of life’-style show set in this universe and it’s almost like my prayers were answered (and then some) with this fantastic episode! Not only do we get all the requisite CGDCT things like, cute girls eating, cute girls talking about girly things, cute girls interacting with younger girls and cute girls shopping. But we also get a god-tier bath sequence with no less than 30 of our characters appearing in the nude–yes it’s censored by heavy amounts of steam–but it’s still sexy as heck and probably among the best fan service we’ve had all season (so far). Also, there are rumblings that there’s a possibility that the scene will be less censored for the blu-ray version and if that’s the case then you might as well bump this score up to 100/100 because it’d be perfection.

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 4

If your idea of a good time is spending almost an entire episode in men’s bathhouse as our protagonists solve a crime between masked musicians then this is the episode for you! For me however I found my attention wavering throughout and while there was some genuinely funny moments it was a bit lacking overall.

Val x Love – Episode 5

The first third of this episode was excellent–probably the best this show has been so far–at least in regard to fan-service and showcasing best girl Yakumo at her, well… best. The rest of the episode flip flopped between more of the same for this series which is a bit of a double-edged sword, the action was kind of lame but there were some decent character moments. Oh and it ended on a cliffhanger which seemed unnecessary but oh well…

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 5

Mash and Ritsuka go on a roadtrip with King Gilgamesh and while I’ve always been a fan of Mash since the beginning of this show, Ritsuka and Gilgamesh do not make for the most interesting of travel companions and it hurts the show considerably (hence the sharp drop in points from previous episodes). Things pick up a bit as the gang has a sudden confrontation with the disposed god Enkindu and truly the initial skirmish between the aforementioned and Gilgamesh was a visual treat to behold–as is to be expected of this series–but it comes a little bit too late as Enkindu retreats to stretch this series out as much as possible. Still an enjoyable episode but hopefully things are put right to where they previously were next week because this show is legitimately excellent!

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 3

Honestly the funniest and most relatable thing about this episode was its willingness to admit how legitimately uninspiring and downright boring rifle target shooting is from a strictly spectator perspective–especially in a larger scale, multi-opponent practice set-up. And while I appreciate the show’s honesty on the matter it’s true that as far as this show goes this is the weakest episode so far by a large measure. Am I worried about this series going forward? No, not at all, even at its most “boring” it’s still cute girls doing cute things and these are exceptionally cute girls with varied and fun personalities, but the overall appeal of the ~things~ they are doing are starting to show signs of weakness overall.

After School Dice Club – Episode 5

This show (recently at least) seems to always be lapping at the verge of greatness but for whatever reason seems to be flubbing it in minor ways that have me wary of being truly excited about it each week. Granted this week is the highest the shown has scored yet and an 86/100 would otherwise seem like more than a recommendation, but at least 10 of those points (or more) are strictly because we get both hot springs and beach episode fan service to enliven the festivities. Also some vague ‘yuri vibes’ which are probably all in my head but I can’t help but mention them, otherwise it’s just another pretty good episode of girls playing analogue games.

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 4

I knew eventually the narrative would have to slow down as there was no way it could maintain the pace it had the previous two or three episodes and sure enough we get an episode that amounts to little more than just training for our E-rank girls to become better at working together. And as far as this show goes it’s still fun and entertaining thanks in large part to how charismatic these characters are and their various interactions, but it’s still a decline nonetheless.

This show’s strongest suit continues to be its comedy but this episode at least surprises a little bit by showing its adaptability in conveying genuine dramatic content with considerable stakes–sure they aren’t in any way really connected to our consistently detached protagonist–but they gave what could have been an otherwise threatless series of encounters are more palpable sense of urgency.

I find myself saying this whenever I eat mayonnaise now…

There was a lot of good about this episode, the idea of taking over an entire civilization by forming a religion based on magic tricks, bunny girls and mayonnaise is all kinds of wonderful and funny and silly (and even vaguely satirical–even if that wasn’t the author’s intent–I can’t say for sure). But I can’t help but feel like it kind of cheapened what could have been a chance for a more complex and interesting route to a takeover, maybe I’m just nitpicking but sometimes I think this show is a lot smarter than the average isekai and then sometimes I think it’s just cutting corners on its way to the next bigger and better encounter. Though I will say the stuff with Bernard was truly excellent and the way this show connects its isekai’d protagonists with the common people of this world is top notch.

AZUR LANE – Episode 5

In what’s otherwise been a pretty consistently excellent season ‘AZUR LANE’ takes its first dip in quality both in reference to its visuals and narrative as overall the animation and line work felt especially weak and the narrative felt like it was spinning its wheels to make up time between bigger battles. Where this episode excelled was where this show always does and that’s in its characterisation, design and voice acting which remained consistently strong and full of appeal. Hopefully this is just a minor blip on the radar as this show has otherwise been pretty hard to fault up to this point otherwise.

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 5

To be fair it’s a nice bra. Yes, that’s *totally* the reason I chose to use this screenshot.

For a series that has so much potential to break out from stereotypes of the harem genre this episode couldn’t help but fall into the stereotypes of its own show. And while it was at least savvy enough to acknowledge that it was repeating itself with regard to its comedic content it was kind of disappointing that more forward progression wasn’t gained, especially in the second half which was pretty much a carbon copy of a first season episode. Still fun though!

For the most part this was a pretty standard episode for this series–that is to say exceptionally funny and filled to the brim with 4th wall breaking moments, otaku references and in-jokes which were as always top-notch. But it was some of the gender politics that had me enjoying the episode less than expected. Though don’t be mistaken, this is still miles ahead of the majority of what isekai and comedy anime delivers nowadays… it’s just the first part of the episode is a lot stronger than the second part #justsayin.

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 4

Our girls do battle against the titular foreign duo we were introduced to last episode and the race is exactly the glorious combination of high-speed racing action, silly fan-service and unexpected sports anime-esque high tension. Kinda hard to say more than that as all the enjoyment was watching this episode and hopefully they can continue with the high quality going forward!

Fire Force – Episode 15

I don’t know why but this whole sequence just cracked me up. I’m really warming up to Arthur (no pun intended).

There’s so much I loved about this episode, new arc–great, new OP–sublime, new characters? Okay, I guess if we have to… oh what’s that three new characters? Slow down there, cowboy! While all the characters are interesting additions to the show, I do think it’s too much too soon, and while Vulcan’s character motivations are certainly admirable and downright inspiring it kind of seems a bit heavy handed and out of nowhere to fully compete with this show at its best. Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 2

The first half of this episode felt like the writer had just seen ‘The Big Short’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ films and needed an outlet to vent his indignation about the 2012 US housing crisis just transported to 22nd century Tokyo. It was a little bit distracting but honestly kind of compelling all the same thanks to some good writing and slick visuals and while this first ‘arc’ is wrapped up pretty neatly its the second arc concerning politics, idols, their relation to the Sybil system and the potential for a consistent thread throughout these narratives that truly makes this episode riveting viewing. Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 4

95/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

The thing this episode did so well was give one of the most recently underrepresented characters of this series her due, sure Megumi isn’t the most compelling of characters but she is the most endearing and this episode did her right–something that’s been sorely lacking since as far back as the second season. The stuff with her imagining herself as being in her favourite sports manga that she used to read as a kid as a way of motivating herself to get through the gruelling training was sublime. Its probably way early to say this but this’ll no doubt be a highlight of ‘Food Wars!’ 4th season come the end.

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 3

This episode definitely amped up the overall comedy of the show (not that it wasn’t funny before but this one seemed to relish in it) and most of it was a hit–though the broken English jokes got a bit repetitive after a while. Not much else to say as this show seems to have found a formula that more or less works for it and will probably keep at the ‘case of the week’ format until the Jack the Ripper case rears its head again or it finds a new long-running arc to tackle in the meantime.

Val x Love – Episode 4

80/100 (DOWN 2 points from previous episode)

This episode was cute from beginning to end while just being naughty enough to warrant this show’s ‘ecchi’ genre brand. Narratively speaking though this episode felt more like a midway point between story points and as such was a little underwhelming in that respect.

After School Dice Club – Episode 4

I was reminded of ‘Anima Yell’ a bit in this episode as we have a brightly haired know-it-all new character who interjects herself into the life of our three characters, thinking she knows best but is actually just incredibly annoying. Thankfully the show takes her to task and doesn’t let her ruin the balance between our three protagonists and unlike ‘Anima Yell’ this new girl isn’t going to be anything more than just a minor supporting character. Also, the game they play in this episode was probably the most interesting and strategic of all and learning a bit about how Germany implemented the title of “authors” for individual games was pretty cool too…

The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious – Episode 3

Anime out of context images like this are the best.

An improvement over last week in at least one substantial regard in that all of the comedy lands a lot more satisfyingly than the previous–aligning it more with the first episode in terms of overall quality. Our hero protagonist is still a douche, by design, but he’s at least got some recurring jokes, such as the holy water, that had me laughing out loud every time.

My Hero Academia – Episode 66

The most interesting thing about this episode was the final few minutes back at the dorm as, like always, I’ve always thought the side-characters in this show were far more interesting than Midoriya’s story. That’s not to say Midoriya’s ‘test’ with Sir Nighteye wasn’t worthwhile to watch, it was a dynamic and well-written set piece that’s clearly an important part in his journey, I just kind of wish we didn’t spend so much time on it.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 4

88/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

Lyrule really is stunning, shame this outfit wasn’t adorned under happier circumstances.

Things escalate dramatically with this episode with Tsukasa announcing nothing less than the destruction of the “old world” and for the society of this world to advance 500 years forward; socially, technologically and politically. It’s big talk that’s backed up by big action as Elm Village attacks, seeking to rescue Lyrule from a lecherous lord and in the process begin the dismantling of the caste system itself. An extremely solid episode with great character moments for everyone (even the side characters) as well as just a lot of cool moments that will no doubt lead to bigger and better(?) things going forward!

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 3

The body proportions in this image get weirder the longer I look at it.

At several moments during this episode I had to wonder “are we sure this wasn’t meant to be an ecchi series?” because in addition to multiple changing scenes and a lengthy bathing sequence there was comedic panty-shots and boob-jiggles to rival even ‘Val x Love’–a show that’s supposed to be an ecchi. Aside from that the rest of the episode was–well it was more of this show explaining a lot of stuff in preparation for coming battles… I guess that explains why they went so heavy on the fan-service… not that I’m complaining!

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 2

If the first episode broke some of the long-standing rules on cute girl shows and club based school anime (and did it in all the right ways) then this episode is more about settling into a rhythm–not one worlds aways from the various tropes of the genre–but likewise one different enough to distinguish itself. The girls are still cute, the comedy still fun and their passion for rifle shooting is still high but it’s going to take seeing more episodes to see if this show is going to progress more in a ‘sports anime’ direction than a ‘club anime’ direction.

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 4

Jaguarman is a god in a onesie. What anime is this again?!

I loved how unexpected and seemingly out of place the appearance of the goddess “Jaguarman” was in this episode, everything from her personality, her movements and even her visual style seemed like it was from a different anime–and it absolutely worked in creating a sense of both unease and comedy–which I feel is rare for an anime like this which can occasionally be guilty of being a bit rigid. Aside from that an otherwise expectedly intriguing and entertaining installment of this show.

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 3

91/100 (EVEN with previous episode)

Hard to disagree with this kind of culture!

The first half of the episode gets a lot of club forming related shenanigans out of the way so as to have our latter half be devoted to what can only be described as ‘look at these ridiculous gaijin girls’ related shenanigans. We’re properly introduced to our Western jet-racing pair Emily Orange and Jennifer Peach who, despite their names are not strippers (well not that kind anyway). These girls bring a lot of energy to the show but really are only here so that a silly rivalry can form between Jennifer and Aoi so that they can settle it with a jet-race next episode!

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 3

Suffice to say she gave *everyone* a nickname this day.

Short of breaking up the already tried and true format of these ‘team Shokugeki’ episodes there’s going to be little movement in the way of scores and likewise little to say in these individual episode reviews. This episode is more or less a precursor for the next round and sets itself up as some tense battles to come. On a side note, I’m glad they gave Momo more to say and do in this episode, she’s very cute but also surprisingly intimidating hopefully she can live up to both of these qualities in her upcoming battle!

AZUR LANE – Episode 4

94/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

This episode gave us more of a closer look at the Sakura Empire and the various factions at work within which goes to show that this ‘war’ is far more multifaceted and less black and white than we previously were led to believe. Likewise the visuals are gorgeous throughout and the girls are just an absolute joy to watch. Perhaps I should start a petition for a Sakura Empire themed Slice of Life anime series…

Psycho Pass 3 – Episode 1

I’m not sure what’s going on here but it sure is intricate and impressive looking!

If you haven’t seen so already, Irina and I discussed this episode plenty in our collaborative review. But if you’re too lazy to click a link–or just want a shorter version of my thoughts–I thought this was an excellent sequel slash soft reboot of the ‘Psycho Pass’ franchise that introduces interesting new characters a compelling beginning to a narrative all against a familiar and intoxicating world with impressive visuals and design.

Didn’t I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?! – Episode 3

There were so many wonderfully unexpected things about this show that defied my expectations–but likewise did everything I was hoping it would do, in regard to its excellent characterisation and the progression of the narrative (we have a 6 month time jump as well which helps keep things fresh and fast paced). Honestly though I’m just loving this series, its world and most of all its characters who I’m especially endeared to and can’t wait to see what they all do next!

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 4

Ogata’s makeover made her look like a whole new character.

An honestly hilarious episode from beginning to end with so many laugh-out-loud moments, awkwards situations and silly set-pieces. From Ogata’s stunning transformation into a bishoujo and Nariyuki’s clueless realisation of her identity to the second-part of the episode with Nariyuki and Uruka exclusively speaking English to each other for an entire day and the shenanigans that ensue–all absolutely wonderful.

Fire Force – Episode 14

96/100 (UP 2 points from previous episode)

I always enjoy his little name’s he gives himself.

Wow! What a visually striking and emotionally satisfying conclusion to the Asukasa arc! In earlier episodes of the show a complaint could have been made that the length of the various arcs were too short, and I was almost on the verge of saying that this one–in contrast–was too long but this episode wrapped up everything nicely and showed that this series when it’s firing on all cylinders is a force to be reckoned with!

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 2

Minor overall improvements and a general sense of settling into a comfortable routine makes for a predictable but nevertheless enjoyable episode. Also, I’m glad that amongst our group of male detectives we are given not one but two female detectives added to the cast even if they were sorely underutilised, but there’s still time as it’s only early on and this is a 24 episode long season.

Val x Love – Episode 3

82/100 (UP 2 points from previous episode)

The week-to-week improvements for this show are minor but cumulative and help further endear us to our fundamentally flawed protagonist and likewise the various girls who are entering his circle. While narratively not much happens in this episode it feels like a step in the right direction to making this a more substantive experience and adaptation of the original manga as the fan service is improved (though still lacking as we’re left with a censored version that promises more for the uncensored blu-ray)!

After School Dice Club – Episode 3

83/100 (UP 7 points from previous episode)

After last week’s fall in the rankings things are more or less back on track with how they were in the first episode which is great, wonderful even. Though this episode isn’t anything remarkable its at least comfortable and has our shy protagonist Miki learning not to judge a book by its cover and more importantly the value in the good in every bad situation–no matter how much our memory may skew things to the negative. Also, Aya’s sister Hana and the ‘tough girl’ Maki are totally a couple, no amount of calling them “best friends” will make me believe they aren’t an item. #justsaying

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 3

There were a lot of strong moments in this episode and some not so, while I appreciated the fleshing out of Roo’s motivations and backstory and the conclusion to the merchant business it lead to a somewhat cliche introduction of a new villain who treats peasants like trash and is so much of a cartoon villain that he even kidnaps the busty elf girl to do unspeakable things to her. These elements felt less inspired against a backdrop of otherwise interesting and unique characters… oh and the hot springs scene was pretty excellent as well!

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 2

Dragons and loli’s, what a winning combination (apparently).

I’m glad this show is taking its time with introducing just exactly what kind of show this is because a more impatient series would have crammed all this into a single episode and left the audience reeling from the info-dump. Things are still unclear (like who were the mystery loli’s and their giant red dragon who came in at the last minute to save the day) but it’s the good kind of confusion that leaves you wanting more rather than being frustrated.

My Hero Academia – Episode 65

90/100 (UP 3 points from previous episode)

With the third season of this show I was worried the series was stagnating–spinning its wheels as it focused on the petty squabbling between Bakugo and Midoriya. Thankfully this new episode (after last week’s recap) shows that the series is not only willing to take some risks (we get two character deaths–albeit on the villain side of things) which considerably ups the ante for the future of the league of villains but also the episode show’s that isn’t afraid to show off its comedic chops and ‘quirkiness’ with Midoriya attempting an internship with Sir Nighteye. Also, Bubble Girl, a.k.a best girl, gets a re-introduction, I look forward to seeing more of her!

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 3

Another incredibly solid installment of this series that’s taking its time as far as its central narrative goes but is all the more compelling because of it. I enjoyed the more slice of life-esque elements of this show as our core characters settled down into the daily grind but still enjoyed the minutiae of the everyday regardless. Also, Ishtar (a.k.a. Sexy Rin) makes her second appearance and it was undoubtedly a highlight as was pretty much anything with Ana, she’s the best!

AZUR LANE – Episode 3

91/100 (DOWN 1 point from previous episode)

Surprise beach episode! I say “surprise” because it seemed like even the characters involved were taken aback by having the chance to frolic in the sea, and the sea–and its ties to war and what that meant to each of the girls was the theme of this episode and the drama ran high as Enterprise continued to push herself beyond the barriers of her own well-being. Likewise, the light-hearted shenanigans worked well as a counterpoint to the more serious scenes and the introduction of a fifth faction of battleships on the Chinese side only seeks to expand this already jam-packed cast of cute girls.

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 2

91/100 (DOWN 3 points from previous episode)

This episode is front loaded (pun intended) with a lot of exposition about the ins and outs of jet racing and while absolutely essential to the understanding of the sport and its various concepts it made for a little dry viewing with only the high quality 3D animation of the race itself and the smattering of fan service to keep the audience’s attention. The race itself was still interesting and fast paced but it lacked any real stakes as it was quite literally a tutorial race for the viewers. Things pick up afterwards as we’re afforded a double shower scene as well as some gym scenes to amp up the quantity and quality of the service. The episode also has its fair share of genuine laugh-out-loud moments which is also appreciated and shows this series knows exactly what it is and isn’t afraid to be cheeky about it.

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 2

Shonen anime are always so hard to talk about on a weekly basis, especially one’s so deep into their run like we have here. It’s more of the same great entertainment that leaves me grinning from beginning to end but little in the way of overall development as we’re well in the middle of a tournament arc and with no signs of it ending any time soon. Subaru’s ‘imitations’ of his Elite 10 competitors were an undoubted comedic highlight as were the fan-service heavy tasting scenes involving the emcee.

A minor drop but a drop nonetheless, with our characters starting life at ‘adventuring school’ I was reminded of the weaker aspects of the anime ‘Endro’ but thankfully the laughs are still plentiful, as are the references and meta-humour. Plus our characters are just such a joy to watch that any shortcomings are easily overlooked.

Fire Force – Episode 13

94/100 (UP 1 point from previous episode)

Sometimes you just gotta throw a little girl against a wall. Wait, what?!

The action from the previous episodes continues to build and build as the Asukasa district is beset upon by the enemy and Company 7 and 8 have to work together to beat back the enemy that has infested the former’s territory. There’s some incredibly cool action moments interspersed between character moments and much needed comedy that all add up to an excellent episode that promises even more greatness going forward!

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 3

I ship these two. Also Ogata eating ice-cream is adorable.

The first half of this episode with Ogata accidentally cutting her bangs and Nariyuki not noticing any difference was ‘business as usual’ as far as this show is concerned (which is to say, absolutely wonderful but somewhat predictable). The second half however, still mostly focused on Ogata managed to be surprising in all kinds of ways with side-character Sawako getting some more focus which is intriguing because I have to wonder what purpose she’s going to have going forward and whether she’s going to be a romantic interest or not.

Rifle Is Beautiful (Chidori RSC) – Episode 1

Getting the important details out of the way in the first episode, obviously!

As many of you might be aware, cute girls doing cute things shows are among my favourite, however there are many tropes of the genre that are inescapable and as such it can make watching new CGDCT shows initially predictable as you’re introduced to characters who fit into various familiar tropes and watch a show eke out it’s identity among countless other shows doing similar things. So why do I specifically bring this up? Well, because almost every thing I thought was going to happen from plot developments to character tropes were subverted. That’s not to say that this show is a total subversion on the CGDCT genre but it was honestly refreshing to have a show skipping past the whole ‘making a club’, ‘recruiting members’ malarkey in a matter of minutes that in some shows lasts multiple episodes. But aside from all that the show is wonderfully fun, hilarious at times with a bunch of girls I’m already wholly invested in spending more time with. Honestly a wonderful first episode from beginning to end and if things continue at this quality this could truly become one of the greats of the genre!

Case File nº221: Kabukicho – Episode 1

This show wasn’t on my watch list initially, but after dropping ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ I figured I’d give something completely different from my usual genre preference a chance. And while the lack of female characters (so far) is inherently a negative the show itself is a pretty interesting and entertaining take on the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ story, our titular Sherlock is undoubtedly the highlight of the episode especially his use of traditional Rakugo performances as his version of a ‘mind palace’ in order to work out whodunnit. Not the best premiere this season but still intriguing enough to keep going with it for the time being.

After School Dice Club – Episode 2

So this episode kind of breaks one of my unwritten rules about ‘cute girls doing cute things’ shows and introduces a male character–not that men can’t exist as characters in these shows, after all the game shop owner is a dude–but having one feature so prominently and with so much overbearing inner-monologue about his crush on Aya was endlessly frustrating to an otherwise ~very good~ episode of this show. The game they played was interesting and tactical and when it wasn’t interrupted by the annoying boy it was a good time. Thankfully the preview for the next episode shows no sign of him and so hopefully can return to how it was in episode one.

Val x Love – Episode 2

Hardly seems like a difficult thing considering…

While a noticeable improvement over the first episode (thanks to a more thoughtful narrative pacing) some of the problems still persist, namely in the fan-service department as things feel very chaste and ordinary considering the subject matter–which is absolutely not the way an adaptation of ‘Val x Love’ should feel. That said the inevitable blu-ray (might, hopefully) have some more sexy times content to improve things but only time will tell. There’s some decent character development here and even the action is pretty well done so hopefully things progress in this upward trajectory going forward.

So, our “hero” was a bit of a douche in this episode now, wasn’t he? Which I mean I guess is the point but when the comedy is at the expense of other people, it kind of puts a bit of a sour taste in the mouth. Granted that’s only a minor part of the episode and Ristarte (and others) call him out on his ‘douchebaggery’ so it’s not like the show isn’t aware of it, it was just something that made an otherwise great episode a little bit less.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World – Episode 2

This episode spends the majority of its time with just one of our prodigies which is absolutely necessary not only because it helps develop the character but intrinsic that it’s this character–the entrepreneurial Masato–as his was probably (on the surface) the least likeable character. And while the show still paints him as a ruthless, money hungry business man he’s at least savvy enough to know that you can’t win over the common-folk by screwing them over. Plus he unintentionally acquires a cute little fox loli companion along the way that does a great service to soften his image and make the many scenes with him throughout this episode all the more entertaining and enjoyable to watch.

My Hero Academia – Episode 64

Don’t you hate it when you get your finger tips in the photo frame!

As far as recap episodes you could go far worse than this, in-fact the framing device of a reporter investigating UA High to find the identity of All Might’s successor (and the various little twists that this plot point employs) is both a smart way to re-introduce all our characters and where the world itself is at this point in the narrative. Also for a recap episode there’s honestly not that much reused footage that at no point did it feel like a chore to sit through, it was honestly a great episode in-of-itself with a few laughs and even some emotional moments thrown in.

Z/X: Code Reunion – Episode 1

And war never changes. Oh wait, that’s the other anime this season…

I didn’t know what to expect from this show other than what the poster provided (aka cute girls) and so watching the episode not only did it provide cute girls (positively the cutest) but it also provided an unexpected edge as well as considerable production values and an excess of intrigue. This isn’t your ‘run of the mill’ cute girls in peril show, this seems like a series that knows what it’s doing and does it well… If this vague-ish review doesn’t make much sense but likewise piques your interest then do yourself a favour and watch the damn show!

Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia – Episode 2

I don’t know if I’ll ever get tired of simply looking at this show because the production values in this series are out of this world and honestly breathtaking. Though, aside from an early action scene, this episode prioritises dialogue, exposition and world-building which while still interesting does slow things down a bit. The introduction of Merlin and Ana however elevates what could have been dry and stuffy expositional dialogue into downright compelling television.

Food Wars! The Fourth Plate – Episode 1

High, unrelenting energy is the best way to describe this fourth season premiere, indeed it’s sort of a dizzying, breathless 24 minutes of anime that it’s almost hard to take it all in. And yet it doesn’t feel rushed at all, if anything re-introducing so many characters and backstories and new cooking challenges to be faced in such a fast-paced fashion just makes me even more eager for the subsequent episodes to come! ‘Food Wars!’ is back and I almost forgot how much I missed it!

AZUR LANE – Episode 2

I’ll avoid the obvious crass joke and just go “mood”.

A part of me was afraid that lightning wouldn’t strike twice and the over-the-top action and fan service-y shenanigans of the first episode would be left by the wayside in favour of something more slow paced and low-budget but thankfully this show has (seemingly) no end of money or characters as it once again delivers an action packed spectacle filled to the brim with all the cute girls you could ever need!

We Never Learn Season 2 – Episode 2

92/100 (DOWN 4 points from previous episode)

Sensei gives good face. Don’t get on her bad side!

Obviously a ‘92 out of 100’ isn’t by any stretch of the imagination a significant downgrade but there was a bit of repetition to the scenarios here that if I were to nitpick was a little bit annoying but even a lesser episode of this show still makes for a hilarious and worthwhile experience.

Fire Force – Episode 12

93/100 (DOWN 2 points from previous episode)

Another excellent episode of ‘Fire Force’ that hits all the strong points it’s been hitting since its debut while building towards expanding the world and a larger plot. If I have one minor complaint is that the circumstances leading to this episode’s confrontation felt rushed and kind of flimsy but the subsequent action and drama that resulted from it was top class.

Kandagawa Jet Girls – Episode 1

94/100 (NEW entry)

The thing this episode does so brilliantly is how it so effortlessly brings you into a world where this two person jet racing sport–where one person drives and the other person attempts to shoot the rival jet racers clothes off–not only seems like a high-stakes sport but that it’s so serious about it too. Which you would think would be at odds with the overall ridiculousness of the concept and the outlandish and colourful characters who participate in this sport but that’s the thing this series seems to understand about sport in general is that to the people involved it’s the most important thing in the world. Also, did I mention all the thicc fan-service you could ever want? (Note: this score is representative of the uncensored version of the episode, not the censored version found on streaming services.)

The highest debut episode of the season comes in an unassuming form, I mean sure it was my most anticipated anime of the season but the fact that it not only lived up to those high expectations but exceed them is something very rare indeed. Mile/Adele/whatever name she’s going by at this point in the story is a joy to watch and her meta-commentary on the isekai genre brought some of the strongest laughs of the season so far. I can’t wait to continue this journey with her and her new companions and see what comes from this interesting take on the isekai genre. Also, while we’re on the subject, more female isekai protagonists please!

Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest – Episode 13 (Finale)

Did someone say ‘perfect season finale’ because that’s damn well what we’ve got here. Okay, by now you know already that I’m biased AF towards this wonderful series but what else am I to do? There’s high stakes drama, there’s affable comedy, there’s brutal comeuppance, there’s harem shenanigans and there’s fantastical resolutions all jam packed into 24 minutes and also there’s a satisfying sense of closure to the proceedings which is something particularly rare as so many shows vie for a second season. But the jokes on them because ‘Arifureta’ is getting a second season and all the pieces are in-line for a monumental continuation of the various plot lines that this season finale either invokes or continues.
