Well now that all(?) of the Anime for Spring 2018 have at least aired an episode likewise all the Opening Songs have been released and I have listened to ALL of them in preparation for these lists. The first list is for my 10 best Anime OP’s of Spring 2018! Like with the group of lists I did previously regarding the Winter 2018 OP‘s and ED’s there’s a few stipulations about song eligibility. First of all only OP songs that are 1 minute 30 seconds long are eligible, so no songs from short anime (unless of course they have full length openings). Also these choices are based solely on the quality of the song, not the anime or the animation during or any other factors. So with that in mind, let’s count down my 10 Best Anime OP’s of Spring 2018!
Number 10: “Diver’s High” by SKY-HI from Gundam Build Divers.
It’s cool and fresh and hip and all those other kinds of words kids don’t use anymore. The fact it can go through so many different musical moments in such a short span of time and not feel disjointed is a testament to the song’s quality!
Number 9: “Make Debut!” by Special Week (Azumi Waki), Silence Suzuka (Marika Kouno), Toukai Teio (Machico), Vodka (Ayaka Ohashi), Daiwa Scarlet (Chise Kimura), Sold Ship (Hitomi Ueda) and Mejiro McQueen (Saori Oonishi) from Uma Musume: Pretty Derby!
If you’ve read my other lists you already know I’m a sucker for songs sung by the voice actors, and this is certainly no exception. It’s just fun from beginning to end!
Number 8: “Winding Road” by MAN WITH A MISSION from Golden Kamuy.
There’s something nostalgic about this song, even though I don’t know what for exactly! It’s just a great damn song!
Number 7: “Touka no Manimani” by Nao Toyama from Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits.
Musically this song is just gorgeous and the fact that the main voice actress is singing it and singing it so beautifully is just great too. It’s got such energy and emotion and I can’t get enough of it!
Number 6: “Paradigm Box” by Ritsu Shikishima (Chiharu Sawashiro), Shougo Satake (Shunsuke Takeuchi) from Caligula.
Another song sung by the anime’s voice actors, except this time it’s the two main guys. And I’m not usually one to say this about male singing voices but the second guy’s voice is sexy! Oh and it’s a great song too…
Number 5: “BREAK IN TO BREAK OUT” by Lyn from PERSONA 5 the Animation.
Having listened to all of the Persona 5 soundtrack from having played the video game there’s a lot of great songs on it by Lyn, and while I don’t think this is the best out of all the songs she’s sung for this series, (it starts a bit slow) it’s got a damn addictive chorus with an infectious beat!
Number 4: “Bite” by LEO Imai from Megalo Box.
The best OP’s can make you want to watch a show without even seeing a second of the show, or at least I’ve always thought so. As is the case with this track, it’s so damn 80’s and I love it! It also sounds so unique amidst all the other OP’s this season. Also, more cowbell.
Number 3: “Binary Star” by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Uru from The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so the band Starship ought to be blushing bright red if they ever heard this OP, either that or calling their lawyers. The chorus sounds so much like the 1987 song ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ by Starship that I have to believe it was a loving homage. Regardless of the possible copyright infringement it’s also a beautiful song.
Number 2: “Merigo” by Cypress Ueno to Robert Yoshino ft. SKY-HI from Gurazeni.
It’s just so funky if the Number 4 pick was pure 80’s then this is the 70’s! But not in a dorky or uncool way, it’s just plain fun and I love every minute of it!
Number 1: “Growth Arrow” by OLDCODEX from Butlers x Battlers.
As I mentioned in my review for the first episode, I was struck by how much the vocalist for this sounds like the lead singer of one of my favourite bands ‘Poets of the Fall’ (despite them being Finland). And that’s something I just can’t help but love, maybe it influenced my decision to place this song at number one, but I stand by the fact that this is a rocking track and I happily proclaim it to be the best anime OP of Spring 2018!
I hope you enjoyed this list, let me know in the comments what you’re favourite opening song of the Spring anime line-up is! Coming up next week will be the Worst OP’s of Spring 2018!
Hello and welcome back to Listing Compulsive, this weekly countdown blog I’ve got going! Well I’ve already covered my 10 best and 10 worst opening (OP) songs for the Winter 2018 anime season, might as well get the ending (ED) songs one’s done before the Spring season starts and I do it all over again! Listening to the many ending songs one thing was abundantly clear; the ending songs from this season were far more consistently better than the openings, by a wide margin in fact! Which as you can imagine made compiling both lists a lot more difficult!
As per the previous lists, I listened to every available ED track from the current anime season, but refrained from looking at the visuals, as this is a list ranked on audio alone. Also, while it may seem unfair, I have excluded any show that has a different ending song for every episode (or more than 3 in the space of a short run). So without further ado here are what I consider to be the 10 best anime ED’s of Winter 2018!
Number 10: “DIRTY BULLET” by TRI4TH from Hakata Tonoktosu Ramens.
‘There’s something super funky, and effortlessly cool about this track, kind of like something from Cowboy Bebop’s soundtrack.’
Number 9: “Harvest Moon Night” by Mikochi & Konju from Hakumei and Mikochi
‘While not anywhere near as moving and sublime as the opening proved to be (it ended up at number 1 of my OP list despite never having watched the show!) it’s still a sweet and charming tune.’
Number 8: “Furu Biyori” by Eri Sasaki from Yuru Camp
‘There’s a fine line between meditative and boring, but somehow no matter how many times I hear this track I’m never bored.’
Number 7: “HUG tto! Miarai*Dreamer) by Cure Yell, Cure Ange and Cure Etoile from Hug tto! Precure
‘Imagine my surprise when a show I’ve never even heard of delivers such a bangin’ tune! High energy, high fun, what’s not to love?!’
Number 6: “I AM STANDING” by RUANN from March Comes In Like A Lion 2nd Season
‘I don’t know, is it just me or does this singer sound a lot like Sporty Spice? Weird thought I know, but I do enjoy this song a great deal, it’s different enough for me to take notice but weirdly nostalgic in a lot of unexpected ways.’
Number 5: “Miracle Colors☆Honjitsu mo Ijou Nashi!” by Colors☆Slash from Mitsuboshi Colors
‘Remember in my best of list where I said I can’t resist anime songs that feature the voice cast? Well, ditto☆.’
Number 4: “Ref:rain” by Aimer from Koi wa Ameagari no You ni
‘It’s Aimer, what else did you expect but a beautifully sung piece of music?’
Number 3: “PRIMALove” by ClariS from Beatless.
‘Another popular and reliable name in anime music, aside from the top tier vocals the beat is infectious and there’s a great sense of progression to the song, captured in such a short period of time. Hard to fault, really.’
Number 2: “Kedarmono Damono” by Kitsunetsuki from Killing Bites
‘You ever listen to an ending song and wonder why it wasn’t made the opening instead? Yeah, well this 100%. Also, I don’t know why but for some reason the song reminds me of High School of the Dead’s opening and Daria(!?)’s ending song. Yeah I don’t know…’
Before we get to the number one pick, here is an honourable mention!
Honourable Mention: “The Perfect World” by Marty Friedman from B: The Beginning
‘This is a really great song, and maybe it should be number one! But you know what stops it from being number one and the reason is going to sound really dumb, but it’s because the lyrics are too good. Namely, I can understand them because they’re all in English… I know I know! That shouldn’t disqualify a song, but for me it almost felt unfair, like here were all these Japanese language tracks and then suddenly BOOM, English lyrics and good ones too! Talk about playing dirty, but I guess it makes sense since it’s from a Netflix anime…’
And now the number one anime ED of Winter 2018 is!
Number One: “Suki no Skill” by Wake Up, Girls! from Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody
‘I’ve heard mixed to bad things about this show, but when ‘Wake Up, Girls’ are on form, it almost doesn’t matter! Okay that’s probably not true, I haven’t seen this show but I just really dig this song! It’s not even that unique of a track, it doesn’t do anything particularly groundbreaking, it just does everything right it’s probably what I would call the ‘perfect example’ of an ending song, and that’s why it’s number one. Also it just sounds as cute as all heck!’
And that’s my 10 best anime ED’s of Winter 2018, but stay tuned because soon comes a list that was almost impossible to forge, the 105 worst anime ED’s! Thanks for reading!
For a minute I thought about making a new blog just for this subject but I realised, that just because a lot of my content is reviews in the 20 Question Format and my blog is called Anime Q and A, didn’t mean I couldn’t shake things up a little. So begins the blog posts under the ‘Listing Compulsive’ banner, they will be countdown style lists where I count down from 10 to 1 my best (or sometimes worst) things related to anime and manga. Also it should go without saying but like all lists these picks are subjective, we all have different tastes so if you don’t agree with me feel free to state why in the comments, it’s always interesting to read other people’s opinions!
The subject of this list, as you can no doubt tell is The 10 Best Anime OP’s of Winter 2018, and to make this list as comprehensive as possible I decided to listen to every anime opening credit song from this seasons crop of shows. Obviously I’ll try and divorce my opinions of the show from the ranking of these songs because it is solely about the music, not the visuals of the opening and certainly not the quality of the show attached to it. I’m also only listening to the version of the song as it plays over the credits, not the full-length song! Music is important, especially to anime, a single great song can inspire you to watch it, whether because of how much it pumps you up, or because how cute it sounds, or maybe it’s just an amazing song fullstop. All were the case with the songs that made it into this list and so with those parameters laid out let’s count down the 10 Best Anime OP’s of Winter 2018!
*Note: I tried to be as thorough as possible, however I may have missed some! Excluded from eligibility are shows that have a different opening every episode, or shows that have an opening 30 seconds or under.*
Number 10: “OVER” by Little Glee Monster from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Boruto? I love Mexican food!
I gotta be honest with you, I’ve never seen a single episode of Naruto, or Naruto: Shippuden or whatever the hell Boruto is. But this song is a straight up toe-tapper! It’s captures the kind of wonder and spirit of adventure that a lot of great Shonen theme songs have.
Number 9: “Colors Power ni Omakasero!” by Colors☆Slash from Mitsuboshi Colors
“Mitsuboshi JUMP!”
As much as I tried and I mean tried to make this list impartial and not influenced by the show itself, I admit this pick and the number two pick I couldn’t separate from the show. But it’s hard when you have the voice actresses singing the song and so you remember all the good times from the show and you can even begin to pick out their personalities in the lyrics.
Number 8: “FEELING AROUND” by Minori Suzuki from Ms Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles
Anyone else hungry?
The beat in this song is so damn infectious, and then when the chorus hits, just magic!
Number 7: “KISS OF DEATH” by Mika Nakashima x Hyde from Darling in the FranXX
Shame they couldn’t put such a good song in a better show.
Proof of the power of a great song, I dislike the show immensely but absolutely LOVE this song; it’s like a James Bond opening from the future! It’s sexy and stylish and just plain cool.
Number 6: “SHINY DAYS” by Asaka from Yuru Camp.
Partially English chorus? Don’t mind if I do!
Even if the opening few seconds are a bit too close to sounding like a Jackson 5 song the rest of it is pure joy and happiness, it just makes me smile!
Number 5: “OH MY Sugar Feeling!!” by Ayana Taketatsu from Dagashi Kashi 2
This song is a sugar high in music form.
It’s not as much as an earworm as some shows on the list; you won’t be humming it in the shower like SHINY DAYS, but while you’re listening to it is quite literally a high. It’s high speed, high intensity and high fun!
Number 4: “The Girls Are Alright” by saya from A Place Further Than The Universe
Nothing cold about this heartwarming tune!
I love the progression in this song, the fact that manages to fit such a quiet, almost contemplative opening, then build, then build then finally explode into that addictive chorus is pure art.
Number 3: “Flashback” by MIYAVI vs. KenKen from Kokkoku.
I-spy an anime with a super cool OP.
Such is the power of this particular song that it made me buy an Amazon Video subscription just so I can watch the show that this cool, head bopping song came from. Maybe the show will actually be good too? Either way the song still rocks. Also, the fact that it doesn’t sound like any other opening this year is also a massive point in its favour.
Number 2: “ne! ne! ne!” by STARTails☆ from Slow Start
Kamuri too precious. Must protect at all costs.
Yup! I’m a sucker for songs sung by the show’s voice cast, whether it’s cute girls like in Yuru Yuri or the whole damn class like in Assassination Classroom, I just think they’re so fun, and this is among the most fun this season! Also, hearing Kamuri sing her parts is just too precious for words!
Before the winner is announced here’s a couple of Honourable Mentions:
Honourable Mention: “Azalea” by Nano.ripe from Citrus
Catchy as hell song, plus I really like the vocalists more rough sound, nice change from all the higher pitched cute girl songs.
Honourable Mention: “Psychomachia” by Yousei Teikoku from The Seven Heavenly Virtues
I don’t watch this show, but I will (pervert, etc), though I admit I didn’t expect death metal for an opening to an ecchi show. I have a soft spot for death metal because of my youth. Also it technically is ineligible because it’s only 30 seconds long, hence why it’s in the honourable mentions.
Honourable Mention: “WiSH VOYAGE” by IDOLiSH7
I’m not sure what boy band this song reminded me of, but I had a good time listening to it all the same, which is strange because I don’t like boy band music, must be because I don’t know what they’re saying that I enjoyed it more. This and “Azalea” just missed out of the top 10 but were worth highlighting all the same.
And now, my favouritefavourite Anime OP of Winter 2018 is:
Number 1: “urar” by Chima from Hakumei and Mikochi
When I decided to do this list, even though I said to myself I would be open to songs from shows I wasn’t watching, I didn’t ever think that one would make it to the number one spot. That should go a long way to selling you on the strength of this particular track. I’ve never watched the show and yet it’s OP is Number 1! It’s whimsical but it has a mysterious dark edge to it that I find irresistible. There were parts of the song that reminded me of my favourite band Radiohead, at other times my favourite live action US TV-show Twin Peaks (composed by Angelo Badalamenti) but even without those musical parallels it’s just such a beautiful song, that honestly made me feel something, even though I had no idea what the song or the show it is attached to is about. But that’s the power of music, to be able to forge connections by sound alone.
And that’s the list, but stay tuned because while it is indeed a great season filled with great songs, there’s also 10 more songs to talk about, the worst OP’s of Winter 2018 coming soon!
